The main Post Office has recently moved its premises to this part of town. The inside has been…read morerenovated and though operational looks like more work is in the pipeline. When you come in through the doors you have to walk down a long expanse of empty space to get to the actual counters. The staff seem pleasant enough and any queues move along quite swiftly. The only complaints I would have about it are the annoying placed scaffolding situated just outside the front door, (been there for months without any sign of work being done) and the fact that in the new location parking is further away

The best thing about this place is that it has long opening hours and is the only post office I'm aware of that's open on Sunday. Open on Sunday! Very convenient.

Sadly for me the unit is just too small and cramped and you are forced to queue between the tubes of Pringles and coffee machine on a busy day. However the staff are excellent and the queues always seem to filter down very quickly. I use this branch to drop off packages mainly but they also stock passport and drivers licence forms and process car tax - 3 items usually only found in larger branches. Parking is excellent at the centre and it's got great public transport links too. Very well located.

The Post Office in Dromore really bears quite a good resemblance to the town centre itself - it's a bit dingy and faded, as well as being pokey and minimal, bless it. Apart from the usual Post Office services, the only other thing in the place were a few greetings cards, and even they looked like they'd seen better days. The girl who served me was certainly much more pleasant than her surroundings, and kudos to her, she was very polite and patient with me. The fact that my little parcel only came to £1.82 added to my contentment, so it really wasn't all that bad at all. A wee facelift wouldn't go amiss mind you...

He of the 'Rivers Of Blood' speech (1968) that I've never forgotten. Mr Powell was an author, an army brigadier, a classical scholar, a British Conservative member of parliament and laterally an MP for the Ulster Unionist Party in South Down. He was the first Ulster Unionist MP not to be a member of the Orange Order. He spoke German, French, Italian, Modern Greek, Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Latin, Aramaic (the language of Jesus Christ) and Hindi/Urdu. He had a reading knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Welsh. In fact the last time I recall stopping in Loughbrickland before today was over 48 years ago to visit Mr Powell where I was cordially received. The post office is on Main Street; a very small street. It is nestled inside a supermarket that also has a self serve fuel forecourt. The only reason we went to this post office was to return a mail order item from whence it came, as it wasn't suitable for our needs. This was the nearest post office that would record and process its return free to us. It is said Loughbrickland may have been the site where the Three Collas fought the Battle of Achadh Leithdherig in 331 AD, defeating the forces of Fergus Foga, king of Ulster. The victors killed Fergus and burned Emsin Macha, the famous palace of the Ultonian kings, to the ground. The sovereignty of Ulster thus passed from the race of Ir to the race of Heremon. During wars Cromwell's men passed through as did King Billy on his way to the Boyne in 1690.

The old house is still there and the park now has accessible footpaths, parking and toilets, a children's play area and dog-friendly facilities, and is a sanctuary for nature, wildlife and people. Our chief purpose a few times a week, when we are home, is to walk the grounds, and to allow two manic dogs run dementedly inside a penned off long section of field. They can't escape. It attracts a lot of folks and their dogs which adds to the mayhem among the different breeds and personalities and it's the same for the dogs. We bring a miniature dachshund and a Bichon Frisé, others bring beagles, bloodhounds, whippets, terriers, Alsatians, some that look like rugs with legs, Newfoundland dogs with webbed feet that you could put a saddle on, but it matters not the size as the miniature dachshund growls and snaps at them all. You sure know she's around. When Steinbeck wrote his last book Travels With Charley - we've named the Bichon Charley - he wanted to examine and comment on American society and its people that he'd lost touch with so to break the ice with strangers he brought a poodle. Not just any old poodle but an old male one with prostate problems and I used to think that was funny. It's similar here as dog owners who only just meet get into easy conversation as if we've known each other for a long time.

Informative and pleasant though the information office is, the real show stealer is the exhibition on the Irish legal system in the courthouse itself. This may not sound exciting but it is imaginatively set up with realistic life size figures clothed in authentic historic garb furnished with artefacts and explanation. The display leads to the actual court room, no doubt the scene of much high drama in the past. On a the way past, look through a back door and see an entrance to Hillsborough Castle with sentry boxes outside the gate emblazoned with ER, a reminder that this unspoilt villlage is also the official residence of the Secretary of State.
