The colonial-type city gates, named Portas da Cidade, are a symbolic structure rather than anything practical, consist of three interlocked open white and brown stone and brick gateways, and feature the city's coat of arms in the middle. They're situated on one of Ponta Delgada open squares, and therefore surrounded by foot and car traffic.
There's not much to see, but it's sort of the architectural symbol of the city, and if you're lucky enough, you'll be in Azores during a time of a festival, which'll take place right by the gates. If so, it'll be decorated and extra lit up! The surrounding area is made of stones, so wear comfortable shoes, stop by for a photo, grab a coffee in the area, and check out these iconic gates! read more
