Went through the drive up last night. First they tried to give us someone else's entire order, then they got one of our sandwiches wrong. We waited while they cooked another and meanwhile I asked for a complimentary piece of cake for their mess ups. The guy at the window argued with me saying we only waited 3 extra minutes and that he's not going to make it right by satisfying our request. In the past (other mgmt) gave their workers the authority to make customers happy but obviously that's no longer the case. What would it have cost them to make us say "wow how cool is that!?" But instead I will now go elsewhere and yelp how rude that guy was and how they messed up our order twice on the same visit. read more

Recently had an Italian beef sandwich and found the beef had no texture. Seemed like it was tenderized almost mushy. Also had a vanilla malt which tasted like frozen Milk. No malt flavor. Since it was a carry out order I couldn't complain. It seems in the last six month or so the their quality standards have declined. The fries and cheese were delicious. I got a combo beef and sausage. It was absolutely horrible. The sausage was ok. The beef was over cooked, dry, and absolutely flavorless. Not only was it the worst Portillo's beef I have had, but the worst beef anywhere. I have had better at bowling alleys. This location is still the worst of any Portillo's between Illinois and Arizona. Honestly! I stopped for one hotdog and fries. My order was taken at 2:08 pm and I didn't get it until 2:40 pm (see photo). This while everyone behind me continued to receive their orders while I sat in the front of the line. I live in Spring Hill Tennessee, I stopped by this store in Batavia at 2:30 pm and bought 3 pounds of Italian Beef and sweet peppers. I placed the bag in my cooler and headed home. Arrived home in Tennessee after a 9 hour drive. I opened my cooler, the beef was there, the peppers were the but alas there is no au jus sauce to make the beef in. I was planning on having family over for this great beef on New Years, but not now! I have no idea how to make a comparable sauce with the seasonings and flavor of Portillos and I am DEFINITELY NOT going to drive back 509 plus miles to get some. We love Portillos. I have loved their food since the sixties. However, our daughter has a very peculiar allergy to almost all animal proteins, and when she discovered that she could enjoy Portillos gravy bread, (the bun dipped in the "gravy") without getting sick she was delighted. There were a few salads that she liked very much but they were eliminated from the menu. The mushroom sandwich was her favorite thing but that was also dropped from the menu. The only thing she can eat is the gravy bread! Tonight for the third time running we arrived home without the gravy bread for her, in its place she got a combo. We live 25 miles from Portillos so driving back for an exchange is out of the question. It baffles me how this can happen. It is obvious that many millennials just don't care about providing anyone any degree of decent service but for this to occur on a consistent basis is a failure in management. One shouldn't need to dig through their bag to make sure Portillos got the order right before they leave the parking lot. Personally, I still love the food but my daughter will avoid Portillos from now on. So now if I am out shopping with her I can't get my Portillos fix. Tighten things up in the service line. The Big Beef sandwich was good but the giardiniera was skimpy. The onion rings were dry and at room temp after we waited about 20 minutes for our order, and the portion was small for a large order. The broiled chicken sandwich was so-so but was much smaller and drier than at Chick-fil-A, and it was also extremely salty. The fried chicken sandwich tasted good but was much smaller than at Chick-fil-A. This is the fourth Portillo's location I've been to under the new ownership and I won't return to any of them. How is it that Portillo's is the only establishment in the whole area that does not have coins and will shortchange everyone that pays in cash? No one else seems to have this problem. Ever since Dick Portillo cashed out and the investment company brought them public the quality and service have gone downhill and now cheating customers out of exact change is their standard for doing business. Food was good, though it has gone downhill since it was sold a few years ago. However, service is severely lacking. I used the curbside pickup due to Covid. All 3 allotted curbside spaces were already filled, so I parked in the next space available. I texted the number to let them know I was 4 spaces down and what the color and make my car is. I received a text back saying "When they're taken you should come inside or wait." So then I wasn't sure what to do, so I texted back asking if I needed to come in. Their response was "Its not due to be ready till 615 then we'll bring it this time but in the future we can only manage 3 spots." Chick-Fil-A can manage 12 spaces. How does a booming business such as Portillo's lack the ability to manage more than 3 spaces? They've really gone down in the past few years under new management. read more

I am happy to report that this Chicago classic has not changed and has remained consistently good over the years. I still don't get the hype, but over the years I have discovered a couple of other items besides the chopped salad that are better than "just good." Therefore, the establishment is deserving of an above average rating. One of these items would be the Maxwell Polish. This classic is a delicacy that has been served at the Maxwell Street Market in Chicago featuring Polish sausage on a bun garnished with mustard and grilled onions. Another delicacy is the chocolate cake. The cake is rich, chocolaty, and moist without being too bitter. I also like the ice tea because it doesn't taste like it comes from a fountain. read more

The one star is not for the food which is generally good. They one star is for charging for peppers on the Italian Beef and the Combo. Sweet peppers are an integral part of the sandwich! This seems like one of the nicer Portillos around, its sad that a few locations have really gone down hill in the last few years. This one always seems clean and is very nice inside. I will forvie that my last beef was clearly not dipped as requested last time. This is a large location and offer lots of different seating options. I don't think I need to review the food, as much as the service and cleanliness of some locations have changed the food is mostly all the same. We can tell a good location for a bad by the salads and the chopped salad here is perfect. We enjoy coming to this location and hope it stays the same. read more

I stopped by yesterday for a beef sandwich - so odd that the beef slices are MUCH thicker than other Portillo's - not a fan of that...also as some of the others mentioned the meat is not very tasteful - even with a bunch of hot peppers - sort of bland. The people that are working are busting their butts and they do a great job but I'm disappointed in the food at this location. Prices have increased but quality, portions, and service have dropped since Yum brands purchased the chain. In other words, congratulations for destroying the value proposition that made Portillo's a regional success. This is highlighted by the recent experience I had trying to redeem the Birthday Club offer from the restaurant. Per the instructions for redemption in store redemption, "To redeem inside the restaurant, go to the inbox on the website or in the app, find the reward, and click the "Redeem in Restaurant" button to reveal a code which you can show to the cashier when ordering". There was no inbox on the app or website, so there was no code. I asked the team member where to find the code, to which I got the answer - "I don't know" and that without the code, I couldn't redeem the offer. I paid for our partial order and left. I was so disappointed with the lack customer service. This is no longer the same Portillo's that Chicago use to enjoy. read more

Service was good, and quick (as fast as they can). The food here is ALWAYS great!! My favorite is the Italian Beef! I also got the Chicago style hot dog and fries, and that never seems to change (good thing). The restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere was very nice. What Chicagoland native doesn't love Portillo's? I don't even eat hot dogs and I still love this fast food restaurant. The Batavia location is expedient and well-staffed. Orders are produced quickly, and the staff is friendly. Like many other locations, the employees yell out cute rhyming phrases when your order is done, such as "Order number fifty one, your order is done." Portillo's food has such a unique taste, and if you have been raised on the stuff, then you truly crave it. The fries are some of the best I have ever had, and I absolutely love the breaded chicken sandwich. When compared to that which you might get from a McDonald's, the quality is ridiculously good. Whether you want a hotdog, Italian beef, or chocolate cake slice, Portillo's is your go-to restaurant. Plus, the 1920s gangster decor is neat. The only problem with this institution, is that the Batavia location has the world's worst parking lot. I do not know what moron designed that space, but I hope he or she has since been fired. The problem is that the parking lot does not make a complete circle, so getting your car out can be extremely difficult. Often, the parking lot is backed up with drive-thru vehicles. And then there is the fact that the parking lot is too small, so people are often forced to park in one of the other buildings' adjacent lots. If not for the parking situation, this would be a perfect lunch spot. read more

I had ordered my food for takeout, and when I got home across two towns over I realized we were missing a cheeseburger. I made my way back to the restaurant and spoke with the manager on duty, Nick. He took the time to listen to my problem with the missing food, and replaced my entire order to ensure that when my family sat down to eat, everyone's food would be warm. Nick handled the situation so well that I thought the free dessert he offered in the end would have been overkill. When I got home my wife called me a communist for turning down free Portillo's chocolate cake. I frequent Portillo's on a fairly regular basis- it has some of my favorite foods- but I wanted to write a special review for a private event I attended at this location. My husband and I, along with my in-laws, chose Portillo's as the location for our rehearsal dinner for our wedding. Needless to say, the event was wonderful. They had the private room ready in advance, with the appetizer out and ready when the very first guest arrived. All of the food was amazing, with proper temperatures maintained throughout the 2.5 hour event. The deposit to have a room was very small, and you could have quite a large crowd. They even had the servers do our dessert for us- and let us have two because one of the Grandma's is allergic to chocolate. We also brought in a special dessert, and they cut and served that too. I would absolutely recommend this location for a private event, they were wonderful! read more

classy from Portillos to change the bun of the cheeseburger without tell customers. they usually serve sesame seed buns but apparently they think it's ok to change the product they are distributing and not letting the customer know till they are already at home ready to eat. the bun they switched to is terrible soaks up way too much grease tastes compl different than a regular bun. might not be a big deal to some but it's the changing of the product with them not telling me it's going to change expecting me to enjoy the same way even though the food was altered but I'm still paying the same price. read more

This used to be my favorite place to eat and I always looked forward to it with excitement. The food they serve is old and tonight my chili dog was absolutely disgusting. . Good food, not super great. The service is quick but I'm not sure if I like the lines and feeling like I'm waiting for my high school lunch all over again. They do have a great salad ordering area with different types of salads many other places do not offer. The atmosphere is always loud and busy. There is a lot of different seating though. booths, tables, and counter areas. Food is tasty. The prices are average. The best part is all the decorating. There are decorations all over the place literally! I think there is even a car hanging down and some balcony areas (not for customers) with fake people and old time scenes and attire. Portillo's is the gold standard for what a fast food burger should be. While I guess it's on the pricey end for it's category ($5), it's well worth it. Most restaurant burgers don't compare to a classic, char-boiled cheeseburger. Portillo's tries to take care of its employees as well, so you tend to get better than expected service. That being said, if you go during rush periods, your food can be hit or miss. Sometimes they'll accidentally throw in something else or you'll be the one missing that side of fries.
