I go here about once a year and absolutely love it every time. Today's mission was for a mini hosta: bunting. I called before driving 20 minutes to confirm they had these hostas. They had 17. Gentle Reader, breathe, lest your pulse is up, fearful of a sad turn in the story. All is well. When I arrived at the nursery, they not only had plenty of bunting hostas, they had another variegated version of it. I happily walked away with both varieties. We were in need of a large variety of approved plants (by the City of Portland) for a new construction project we are doing - the Foster Theater on Foster Road. Simply the best! I always feel at home shopping here whether I buy anything or not. Any question I have is always answered and if the person I'm talking to doesn't have the answer, they find someone who does. Shopping there on Labor Day I saw a pair of trimmers I was interested in but they were priced significantly above MSRP. I asked the lady at the help desk if the store price matched since the manufacturer was offering it ao much less. She said "No, we don't price match." Then sarcastically said "Nice try." I told her it was just strange because I could buy it direct for much less. She then said "Well we all deserve to get paid." I will pay more to support local businesses but not if they treat their customers like this. read more

This place advertises on Oregon public broadcasting. Their support of public radio has been constant over the years and it has made me feel good about the nursery itself. There are two elements that make Portland nursery outstanding in its class. The first is the sheer breadth of what is available, and how beautifully it is arranged in the site. It is like a botanical garden, with a sense of profusion and also of the seasons. If you wanted to rewrite the novel "Harriet the spy", you would have it take place at Portland nursery. There's so much beautiful sculpture included in all the displays that it really is a fantastic journey just to walk through it all. In addition, the service is outstanding and knowledgeable. There are lots of people who are a bit socially awkward yet deeply knowledgeable about botany, and everything necessary for you to understand what you were buying and why. Portland nursery also stands by everything it sells you. If you properly plant what they sell you and it dies, you can get a full refund. Now I use a garden whisperer so I'm less afraid of killing things but I'm still glad about this policy and hold onto the receipt. read more

I really love this nursery as I grew up near here, and remember when it was Jeibmann's Greenhouse. (I also played on Jeibmann's little league baseball team back in the early 80'). So it's a bit sentimental. They have really done a job job with fixing that place up! The inside has some nice stone work instead of walking on the pea gravel. They have the best variety! The only thing is you will be paying top dollar, so don't come broke. Thought I would buy a banana plant this spring, when no one had them. They had one left. I paid $149 for it, and I was even wondering if it was gonna make it. A month later they had a nicer one at Home Depot for $37.00! Like I said, I bought when no one had them. Everyone there has been really friendly, and I love their selection of pots for my indoor potted plants. read more

The Division Street location of Portland nursery is really good. The only things that keep it from getting five stars are its comparatively smaller size than the Stark Street location, its smaller "main" parking lot, and the gravel overflow lot making it really perilous to push your wagons or carts across due to the uneven level and tendency to shake the daylights out of the plants on said wagons or carts. The staff is really friendly, the selection is great, the plants all appear to be in perfect health. Pricing on some items seems really high, while others seem really low. Really nice spot, with lots of parking. There is tons and tons of plants, all throughout the store. All of the employees are super helpful, always asking if there's anything that you need help with or had questions about anything. Prices are ok, we went when they had a 30% sale on houseplants, so that definitely helped the price. A wide arrangement of pots as well, but they seem pretty overpriced. Perhaps I just don't know how much pots usually run for, I mean how many times in a year do you actually have to buy a new pots. On a whole, definitely recommend this spot. Second visit to Portland Nursery (first to this location) during the pandemic. Got there about 10 minutes before opening, waited on the street for the parking lot chains to be dropped. Employees are all masked - well, almost all. Saw one sans mask. Thought it was odd considering they have many signs telling patrons that they need to be masked to enter. Regardless, this establishment is incredibly well-organized and staffed. Staff know their stuff well, I'd asked for a somewhat obscure item and was directed right to it. Love this local nursery! My wife and I have been coming here for years. This is the second location with the other being off of Stark in SE Portland. There is a parking lot in the front and back of the store. This nursery is open year round. The best time to visit is in the spring when they start bringing in all of the plants. The place is well maintained and the workers are knowledgeable about plants and gardening. There is an abundance of plants, shrubs, herbs, house plants, flowers, pots and other gardening needs. As far as things for the garden and plants this would be your one stop shopping place. They are a specialty nursery that sells things like bonsai, Epiphyllums, bamboo and other plants you will not find in a Walmart or Home Depot. The price is a bit on the higher side, but you do get quality plants and products. We do not mind paying a little bit more to support a local business. There is also an information counter where you can come and ask about gardening and plant questions. We really appreciate the collection of rare, hard to find items and also the assortment of plant pots and other pottery. read more

This nursery has a good selection of local plants and interesting houseplants. However, orchids are not their forte. I was looking for orchids and decided to go to Portland Nursery because I know they have a good selection of plants. There were hardly any orchids which is fine but one of the ones I bought had to have 99% of it's roots cut due to root rot and is now in my little ICU. The other came with a fungus of some type and root rot. I don't blame them for not having many orchids. But, I trusted Portland Nursery to have good quality plants. I am a beginner with orchids and didn't inspect them like I should've. That's on me but I really did trust them to be healthy. Also, the bouquet I bought from them had thorns, was very expensive, and did not last more than a few days. read more

If you have an afternoon to browse and shop, and you're an avid or dabbling gardener, this is an amazing place. I spent about 3 hours here in a delicious sort of slow exploration of every section of this wonderful gardening showplace. It is large, and packed with multiple specimens of most plants, from shrubs and climbers to inside light lovers and bonsai. Has fun small pots and seriously large beautiful ones, ceramic saucers to fit most planters, garden art, tools, trellises, gloves, watering cans, fairy garden pieces, things for children, and so many beautiful plants. Someone courteously stepped up to help whenever I needed it, with information and directions to the part of the store where something I wanted to look at would be, and information about the plants I was considering. The other customers were happy and engaging, too: a sure sign of green satisfaction! I found several new (to me) varieties of lilacs, as well as columbine, lobelia, mini daffodils, rock garden specimens, climbing roses, and several more I couldn't resist trying. No question seemed "too small" to the staff, and they certainly "rose" to the task of answering mine! I hadn't been to the store in more than 10 years. But now that I've rediscovered it, there's something to do in Portland that doesn't feel tourist-y and gives me another reason to enjoy my "necessary" trips there. Woooow this nursery is amazing! They have a huge variegated monstera climbing in the entry way of the indoor plants section, and it's to die for. Too bad they didn't have any for sale. This nursery is seriously amazing, like, it's HUGE HUGE. I was impressed with the pure volume amount of plants they had here. For indoor plants there was orchids, philodendrons ( brazil, neon, moonlight, red congo), a whole section of ferns, lots of bird of paradise and a great selection of outdoor plants. I was so bummed they were out of angel wing begonias when I came though, I'll try again next week! read more

This is our go to place for our organic garden we put in every year. They've got an incredible section for that and the plants always look hearty, happy and green. Speaking of sections, their signage and organization is very easy to navigate while you roam through the area seeking out your huckleberry. This is one of the BEST and biggest nurseries I have ever been to. The Portland Nursery on Division is right off the I-205 which makes it really easy to get to. The only problem is that the place is *huge*. Tips. I had to do 2-3 passes to see everything. I walked all over, and then took a break and had a power bar to eat. After all that I grabbed one of their kid wagons and only then I could make a decision. Even on a busy Sunday afternoon? There was PLENTY of room for scores of customers to move about and rarely be in the same section as other people. I am not even sure how they did that except that the place is simply huge. This is a serious plus after yesterday when I experienced another nursery clogged with customers blocking aisles or who were mad at the world. Enough already. But, I digress. The 'Portland Nursery' SE Division St., Portland, OR location has: a solid shade section, a shade plants for wet soil section, filtered light sections, sun sections, ground cover, trees, shrubs, vegetables, roses, berries, a NW native plant section, hanging potted plants, bamboo, a separate section for Japanese Maple type trees, a tropical wet greenhouse including lots of pond plants, a large bonsai selection, a large cactus and succulents section with *very* unusual finds! Oh -- and houseplants with many varieties I had never seen before. Vining plants, annuals, perennials, lots of ferns many which must be 8-10 feet tall? It goes on and on. Plus.... 50% off plant tables in several sections, many tools, and 600 different seed packets in JUST the one photo I took of the seeds....with many out of range.....so, 1000+ different seed packets? They have awesome pots for those like me who are tired of the same old thing, or need a certain shaped pot to fit a certain place. They had a very large shed with wood planter boxes, wood benches and a whole variety of stakes. They have "rain chains", gifts, and I guess they even have some classes as mentioned on their website portlandnursery.com? Oh, one thing I noticed is that they have awesome, classic, unusual statues. Not the stuff you see in *everyones* yard -- but really, really nice stuff. I think the prices were normal even though others said they thought it was expensive. Maybe those others get plants from large local chains - don't know. The plants were very healthy. The staff were friendly and inserted comments about plants I was eyeing on their own. The person at the front register (there are two registers?) seemed genuinely happy to say hello. I talked to a fellow customer who said he thought the other location on Stark was bigger, but others have said Division was bigger. In either event, this one was easy to get to....and had everything I needed. On another day I will definitely check out the Stark store. Maybe tomorrow. : ) All other nurseries pale compared to this wonderful find. Friendly people, no games....what more could I want? I get attached to things quickly, like plants in this case. I'm not a fan of cut flowers, I always request actual plants instead, ones that don't die and continue to flourish. Probably another reason why I get attached, as they each represent a gift or special time. I always ask for them from the Portland Nursery, as I know there won't be issues with bugs, root rot and poor care. We've spent near a grand in plants here over the last year alone, let's just say our home has clean air. Every single plant has been wonderful and without issues, until a few months ago I realized that one of them had a bug issue. They weren't harmful to the plant and wouldn't spread but it wasn't something that I wanted in my home. However, as initially stated, I get attached and wanted to make it work. It was part of my belated Mother's Day plant haul, so I didn't want to give up hope right away. I did what I could to naturally get rid of them and crossed my fingers. I wrote the Portland Nursery here on yelp with photos and Sara, at the Division location, wrote back with complete understanding and a few options for me to choose from so that they could fix the issue. Fast forward to now, a couple months have passed and my issue wasn't getting better. I was finally ready to give up and have the plants replaced. Sara had explained that their tropical plants come from a seller in Florida and that on a rare occasion, some might come back with a bug or two and that they are more than happy to replace, re-pot or issue a store credit. It's a potential issue that can happen at any nursery and pretty rare. Only one of our other tropical plants from the same day plant haul were effected, we bought about 6 and 3 other regular house plants. So then it came time for me to load the otherwise healthy but buggy plants into my car. All I pictured was me trying to balance a 2.5 year old, diaper bag, purse, keys, and two large plants. None of these scenes played out well in my mind. That's when I came up with the brilliant plan of pre-loading the plants the night before, so I could take them in the next morning. My brilliant plan would have been fine if they weren't tropical plants that needed to be 60 degrees or warmer and if It wasn't 29 degrees that night. I opened my car door the next morning absolutely mortified, as all the leaves turned dark green with spots and felt thin. I flash froze my plants. I took them back inside, completely sheepish about taking them back to the nursery in their ruined shape. I called in and asked for George (Sara had told me to ask for him at the Division location) and he already knew me by name and was incredibly understanding and helpful. Said that it wasn't a problem and that I'd still be taken care of. He said his staff had been told to take care of me and that I was welcome to come in when ever convenient. I arrived at the nursery with my tail tucked and Bebhinn overheard me talking to a sales rep, she walked over and said, "Hello! Yes, we knew you'd be coming in some time this week. I will help you swap your plants out." Not only did she help me find the plants I had and let me pick out the one that I wanted, she also gave me tips on repotting a plant that was growing out of its pot and watering tips on another. From start to finish on a plant situation that was less than ideal for both parties involved, it was handled with patience, understanding and the best customer service possible. I couldn't be happier. I was a loyal customer before but now even more so. We'll continue buying all of our plants from here and advise our friends to as well. Some things are out of your control and situations like these happen, it took me a couple of months myself to even notice the bugs.
