We signed up for a port wine tour with Porto Walkers which included visits to 3 wineries and 7 tastings. I really knew nothing about port - my impression that it was a sweet, heavy wine that old men drank after dinner in period British dramas. I learned that there's a huge variance in types of port and that the industry is really working to attract younger drinkers and introduce new things. The tour started at a traditional producer, then moved to an independent, local place and finally ended up at a cutting edge, new house with a fabulous rooftop bar. Our guide Lucas was great! He was extremely knowledgeable about port wine but also full of great suggestions about Porto and had good insights on the history and culture of this great city. Our other tour mates were cool and fun to hang out with - definitely a good thing for solo travelers to check out. At the end of the day I learned a ton and have a greater appreciation for port wine (not sure I'd drink it often but I do know what to order now). Recommend! read more

We just completed 3 tours with this company, all three were excellent. Two of the tours were of the historic kind, one offered in the morning and covers from Pre-history to the the 19th century. The afternoon tour (called the lifestyle tour) covers from 19th to modern times. I knew nothing about Portugal and learned much. Our tour guide was Pedro for those tours and we and most others found him funny, informative and passionate about Porto. These tours are "free", but you should tip your tour guide for the 3 ish hours they just spent entertaining and educating you. We also attended the port wine tasting tour which did cost money, though to us it seemed reasonable, 3 wineries, 7 tastings (though one place allowed my wife and I to taste some of their more premium wines after the main tour was over, we did purchase some bottles). Alex was knowledgeable of wines having worked in the wine business for some time, and was also very humorous. Drinking wine with a group can quickly allow conversations which in turn allow connections to be made. All our tours were in English. These two Portuguese guides spoke English very well. read more

We are big fans of free walking tours like this one done by PortoWalkers in Porto. I find that the guides really do an excellent job to earn a good tip. Our guide David was exceptional. Bright, funny and very personable. We spent over three hours walking through the streets of Porto learning not just history but about current issues in Porto and Portugal. It was fascinating - he brought the city to life. Given it was unusually hot for late September David did a good job of keeping us cool and in the shade where possible. Make sure to reserve a spot in advance. We heard that this day had an unusually large number of people signed up for tours - I think there were a least 5 groups of 30. The group size is a bit big but it was no issue for David to keep everyone engaged. We also liked the stop at the local chocolate shop to sample some desserts - delicious. We didn't join the free tour, but pay to join the tapas tour instead. It's a perfect tour for foodies (which, if you are reading this, I presume you are). It's more or less nonstop munching for a few hours. We started at the market, Mercado do Bolhão. It's great to go with a guide. When I visit a market during my travels, I always see some exotic food and things that I have no clue what they are. Now, there's a guy who explains everything and even let us try some. We then literally eat and drink our way through the side streets of Porto. Pastries, croquettes, sandwiches, cold cuts, soup, tapas, washed down with wine and coffee. It's not just eating, but learning some background about the dishes, the shops, the culture and the neighborhood. One lament I always have when traveling: too many foods to try, too small a stomach. This tour allows me to taste sample portions of many dishes, and try more things than I could have if I were to visit these places on my own. It was also fun to chat with fellow travelers and swap tips. I say sample, but those bites do add up, and the portions are never stingy, so everybody ends the tour with a very full stomach. read more

We had the most amazing time walking around Porto with Daniel on our tour. Daniel was funny, informative, and entertaining. He gave us so much history and showed us so many amazing things. It was drizzling for half the tour, and he did his best to keep us our of the rain as much as possible without sacrificing what we would get to see or cutting down on the history. And the history he made much more interesting by taking full use of his acting experience. One of the best tours we've ever been on! This is an excellent tour, I did the free morning tour and the guide took us all around the city for over 4 hours. The guide was excellent and provided a lot of interesting history about the city, the tour was a nice starting point to get familiar with Porto. You do tip the guide at the end, so do have cash. read more

If you're going to Porto, PortoWalkers is a great way to get around to well-known, and some not-so-well-known areas. They offer tours in different languages, so there's something available for everyone. Nunu was our guide and he was awesome! Lots of energy, very informative, and always engaging; making the tour even more interesting. The tours are for free, and the guides work for tips, but it's still a great deal considering what it costs to go on guided tours. The company also offers other paid tours such as a Port Wine Tour for 25 euros (absolutely worth it!), a pub crawl, and some others. read more

Two free city walking tours. How awesome is that? Just tip the tourguide however you feel like is right at the end. They also offer a port tasting tour, a food tour, and a bar/nightclub tour, all for a cost (but not expensive either). Our afternoon (lifestyle) tour was with Gonsuelo (aka Speedy Gonzalez). Unfortunately we were stuck with rainy/drizzly weather that day. But Gonsuelo still did an awesome job of taking us around the city and showing us highlights and talking about culture & food. I decided to take a morning (classic) tour by myself, and David was my tourguide. David was an awesome guide who loves this city. The weather was sunny and beautiful. I'm thankful for that because we went to different parts of the city including the Luiz bridge which overlooks Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The sight is wonderful. I learned so much about Porto from both guides. Each was about 3 hours, but it's not tiring. The information and route is different for each, so you can definitely do both if you have the time. I highly recommend these tours for Porto visitors! read more

Porto Walkers offers two walking tours, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. My wife and I attended the morning walking tour and liked it so much we did the afternoon the next day. Our tour guide for both tours was Pedro. He was passionate about his city and you could tell he really loves what he does. He has a great sense of humor which he uses in his tour. He was very knowledgeable and was able to answer that came his way. Obviously a lot of other people felt that he was great too, as most people from the morning tour came back to take the afternoon tour the next day with him as well. I feel like the morning tour covers a lot of the main sights in town. It allows you to get your bearings in the small town as it covers the old town, San Benito train station, Majestic Cafe and the River Duoro. The afternoon tour is sightly more off the beaten path as you'd go to places which you would never come to as a tourist on your own. For this reason, both tours are great in their own ways. But honestly, I've done many walking tours in various cities and it all depends on the guide. Thank you Pedro! You have a wealth of knowledge and an obvious passion for Porto. read more

i am just back after having taking two of their tours today: the morning walk at 10.45h and the afternoon stroll at 15.30h. now i am tired but happy as it was such a nice experience. seeing a city by a relaxed walk with lots of information and entertainment. both guides, david in the morning and pedro in the afternoon, were great. funny, knowledgable, talkative and extremly friendly. i have learnt a lot about their lovely little city today and can only recommend these tours. really. now off for a cold sagres with my book on porto in order to get some deeper info on some of the places that the guys introduced us. so yeah, keep up the good work, boys! read more

This was the best walking tour I've done in any European city! FREE! You just tip your guide whatever you feel is the right price at the end. Porto is quite small but has such a special and interesting history, which we learned all about on our 3 hour tour. Our guide was David, and you could tell he really loves the city and knows a lot about it. He talked about the history by telling us stories about each place we went - this made it very easy to pay attention to and helped me get such a great sense of the city. We did the morning tour which took us to churches, a train station, the main bridge over the river, the first francesinha restaurant, and the UNESCO world heritage village next to the river, as well as plenty of other stops. I learned so much on this one tour! They also do an afternoon tour, a Port wine tasting tour, and a nighttime pub crawl. Our guide David gave us a lot of good suggestions of other places to go and to eat as well that were all on point! Highly recommend doing this introductory tour when in Porto for the first time. read more
