Getting your wisdom teeth out isn't a fun experience, no matter what but if you have to get yours out, I would recommend doing it with Dr. Portuondo. I knew a lot of people who had theirs taken out with him and all had good things to say, he's known for comparatively low swelling and minimal discomfort. For me, the surgery went smoothly and the office is very clean and sophisticated. They sent me home with clear instructions and ice packs. After, I had irritation/discomfort when chewing for longer than was expected (about 10 days) so I gave them a call and went back in. It turns out I had an unusual reaction and had some extra sensitively, without hesitation they made time to bring me back in and treat me - sure enough I was back to normal a day or two after that. read more

All I can say is that I went to a couple of dentist to help me with my situation and some had no sympathy or they just cared about there pocket. One Doctor told me I had to loose all my teeth and it was $77,000.00 dollars I felt like I had no hope. And then a miracle happened I found a doctor that actually cared about my problem. HORRIBLE experience overall. Here's the thing- I understand that for a surgeon, removing wisdom teeth is an everyday routine procedure. What THEY need to understand is that for us, it's a once in a lifetime thing and it's a little concerning for most of us. So I came in for a consultation which was $180. He didn't even sit down. It was so rushed that I think he was in and out in 60-90 seconds. He said "open your mouth....yup no problem come back asap for procedure." I asked him a couple questions as he was trying to walk out which he answered as a courtesy to me. Day of the surgery comes and he comes in and put me under. Does the surgery and I wake up and he's gone. No problem. I go home and it actually felt ok for the first day or two. Then the pain began and it was truly unbearable. I couldn't eat anything except apple sauce and ice cream and even that hurt. Not his fault I guess. After a couple days of that I come in to see him for a follow up. At this point the pain is so unbearable that I'm thinking it might be an infection or something. He walks in and opens my mouth and in 30 seconds says "it's all good" and gives me a syringe to clean my gums with. Sends me home. At this point I've been there 3 times and seen the doctor for less than 5 minutes. I went to NY the next day (as I told him before my surgery) and the pain was getting worse. Finally I had to text him. I took a bunch of photos and sent them to him and he says "come in asap". Im in NYC. I would actually maybe book a flight but based on my experience with him, I could go all the way there for 45 seconds and he says "it's all good just go home". I was trying to get some more assurance from him based on the very detailed photos I sent him but he was pretty much unresponsive to my concerns. Finally I gave up and decided I would just go to a doctor in NYC and forget about this guy. The surgeon told me that one of my gums had a ton of excess tissue hanging that will need to be removed. I asked her why the surgeon didn't just remove it or stitch it up when I was under and she said "I have no clue, but it's going to need to be done". I see and feel what she is talking about and I know she's right. I'm not sure why Portuondo didn't see this at surgery or the next day. I also have a deep gash on my inner cheek that has nothing to do with the gum. I was unconscious but it seems like it was collateral damage. Overall I feel like this is one of the more expensive guys around but he acts like it's a factory. He gives pretty much zero personal attention and gives the patient the feeling that he doesn't care. Like I said, I've been there 3x and spent less than 5 minutes with him total (except when I was unconscious in surgery). These surgeons need to stop acting like rock stars and give us as patients a little more reassurance and support. I need to get my gum fixed and I SHOULD go to him and he SHOULD fix it for free but I'd rather pay someone new to do it than have to deal with this guy again. Very unpleasant. I do not have enough nice things to say about my experience at Dr. Portuondo's office. From my initial consultation to my follow up after surgery, Dr Portuondo was professional, thorough and most importantly made me feel completely comfortable- I knew I was in skilled hands. I admit, I was hesitant to get my wisdom teeth taken out. Like most people, I had put it off until my whole mouth was in pain and I had no other choice but to face the music. The staff at the office was very accommodating and sweet, especially the office manager Teri. They gave me medicine to take before the surgery to ease my pain and meticulously explained to me the process. With all my questions answered, I was confident I came to the right doctor. My surgery went off without a hitch (I didn't even need pain meds after!) and I was feeling back to my old self in no time. Dr. Portuondo is not only an excellent oral surgeon but he is also a caring person. The night after my surgery, he gave me a call to make sure I was feeling okay. That extra step is not required nor expected from doctors nowadays, but it is exactly what makes Dr. Portuondo a cut above the rest. read more

I really enjoyed my experience with this medical professional. He was very kind and courteous and helped explain the root of the problem with my wisdom teeth. I had impacted wisdom teeth that had to be removed and the process was quick and efficient I didn't feel anything during the process. Afterwords they had a relatively simple check up it was an interesting experience I recommend definitely using his helping hand. Now the next step is healing which is probably the longest step. I highly recommend Dr. Portuondo. When I went to his office to get a tooth extracted his staff was friendly and made sure I was comfortable (they even gave me headphones so I would not have to listen to the drilling). Dr. Portuondo removed the tooth so efficiently, I didn't realize the procedure was over. It is such a relief now! When I go for my follow-up appointments I never even have to wait for him to see me. When you walk in the atmosphere is inviting but don't let it fool you. I got my wisdom teeth extracted with him and ended up in ICU and had two jaw surgeries from an infection. The worst part is that I returned several times before going to the emergency room and he dismissed me as being dramatic. Even after the hospital doctors admitted me, he refused to acknowledge the infection. Please be careful and stay away from this dentist! read more

I went to Dr. Portuondo to have my wisdom teeth removed. Going in, I was very nervous, as I had become accustomed to seeing my friends (who had used other oral surgeons) with "chipmunk cheeks" for weeks after their procedures. My x-ray showed my wisdom teeth completely horizontal and impacted. However, Dr. Portuondo did an amazing job. My cheeks and mouth looked relatively normal, with minimal swelling. While I was expecting to spend a few days after the surgery at home, I was able to go college shopping literally the next day. Given that I am 18 and left to college in Boston only around two weeks after my surgery, being productive on days that I expected to be bedridden was amazing. The staff was very kind and helpful. I went to Dr. Portuondo because he was referred to me for an implant by my general dentist, and he is part of my dental insurance network. I have been to a lot of dentists and have had both good and bad experiences with others. My experience with Dr. Portuondo has been better than good--it has been excellent. He is attentive and has thoroughly explained each procedure at each visit for a tooth extraction and subsequent implant. Both were surprisingly painless.
