OK, OK, I will admit - I am one of those beer-loving fools who found this lovely little town…read morebecause of my love for the beer that comes from the world-renowned Unibroue brewery about 5 minutes away. So, we drove out here from Montréal, hoping we could get a tour of some kind, and then discovered that they don't give tours at Unibroue, because of a past problem with possible contamination - we were disappointed, but in the end, the sojourn turned out to be MUCH more fun than we could have expected, and this wonderful historical fort had much to do with that opinion. So, upon parking, you have a short little walk along the lovely lake to the fort itself. The views are lovely, and I will say that the whole experience is fairly amazing - to think that there were settlers holed up in this fort so long ago, all by themselves to fend for their lives, is truly amazing. Once you enter, you make a donation, which is well worth it, and then can enjoy a nice musket demonstration in the courtyard. Then, it's off on a scavenger hunt with your kids as you make your way through the quite impressive museum and learn even more about the rich history of this area and how this fort came to be. Once you are done with the tour, if you have found all of the important things, you can receive your reward from the folks at the front desk! Excellent organization and real attention to detail make this fort museum a must see! After you visit, you can walk around the grounds (lots of lovely paths to enjoy here!) and perhaps even enjoy a nice lunch at the restaurant just next to this amazing fort - Fourquet Fourchette. Super delicious!

My hometown has a historical fort on Lake Ontario and I like visiting other ones to see what events…read morehappened there, etc. Fort Chambly is hands down one of the best forts I have visited in terms of educational and historical purposes. They have worked really hard to preserve and maintain the edifice and provide lots of unique and interactive displays for visitors. There are films to watch with subtitles in English to explain the battles that took place there and how the soldiers lived. There are recipes you can take home in French and English to recreate some of the dishes from that era. There are drawers full of artifacts from all aspects of life and explanations in each scene with life size human figures in the clothing of that time. There were several school kid groups the day we visited from the ES next door that were a bit noisy and rambunctious (running from room to room and yelling-as a teacher, I was appalled), which detracted a bit from the experience, but I would definitely come back. The actors there were also good about answering questions and giving tours. There's a great and affordable restaurant right next to the fort that sells the famous Chambly beers (by Unibroue!) and cooks with them called Fourquet Fourchette (see my review of them, too). Within 30 minutes of Montreal, Chambly is a great place to visit outside of the city.

It is located in Old Montreal, between Place Jacques-Cartier and the Champ de Mars. The closest Metro station is Champ-de-Mars, on the Orange Line. It's open for public tours and it's a favorite spot of many guided tours.

In the summer, the city puts out bistro tables and chairs with umbrellas for people to enjoy. It makes the place look very European ;) It's right across from the historical building that used to be The Bay. I used to walk through it all the time when I was living in Montreal. This small square located in the downtown shopping district becomes a street market each summer…read more Redeveloped in 2021 as part of the revitalization of Rue Sainte-Catherine, the garden square has regained its heritage characteristics as imagined at the time of its conception in 1841. A monument to Edward VII adorns the center of this tiny park named after its donor, Thomas Phillips (in 1840). In fact, the first downtown stores were located around this Square.

The Long Version: Shaughnessy Village is one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Montreal. Its northern boundary is Sherbrooke St. W. and spans as far south as Rene Levesque Blvd. To the east is Guy St. and to the west is Atwater Ave. Lots of Concordia University students live in this area and as a result, there are lots of cheap eats to be had. Once upon a time when I was living in Montreal, $0.99 pizza slices were ubiquitous, but there was this one pizza shop either on St. Marc or St. Mathieu that had $0.49 pizza slices and I'd go there often. The place is long gone, but you can still find food for pocket change in the area. Supermarche Bonjour (de Maisonneuve Blvd W) has fresh pork or vegetarian bao buns for $1.50 each (the beef baos are $2). These prices are a bit of an outlier though, but I'd say you can eat well for about $10-$15 a meal easily in this area. There's a good variety of cuisines in this neighborhood, which has only gotten even more diverse over the last few years. PA Supermarket is in this neighbourhood. It's an independent grocery store that usually has great deals. I used to shop there a lot when I was a poor and starving student and all these years later, they are still around. And they've expanded too and have opened new locations since I left Montreal. Great little neighbourhood, especially for diverse inexpensive casual eateries. Review #235 (2025)

B and I came here to explore the neighborhood and also to grab food. At Shaughnessy Village you will find a lot of Japanese, Korean and Chinese restaurant. The neighborhood is very busy during the day. The streets are clean and I would say it is a safe neighborhood. It is a densely populated neighborhood. Oh guess what B's favorite restaurant Gyu Kaku is located in Shaughnessy Village.

This is a must see visitor location. It's simply amazing the view that you get here. It's not…read morecrowded. It can accessed bus 11 W. During the summer months, you may need to figure out where the reroute is the stations because it does not stop at the typical metro station. Breathtaking views of the city simply priceless. This terrace offers the best panoramic view of Montréal, overlooking the skyline and the St…read more Lawrence River. You can reach it by several trails, but one of the most popular starts on Pine Avenue, where you climb a long set of stairs. If you're near Mile End or Mont Royal Avenue and don't feel like hiking, bus 11 westbound drops you right near the top -- from there it's an easy 5-minute walk to the terrace. I visited on a sunny weekday, and while there were plenty of people enjoying the view, it didn't feel crowded. There was still space to relax and take photos. At the terrace, you'll also find a chalet with free public restrooms, seating, and a small café where you can grab a pastry or a drink in the shade. If you're visiting Montréal, this lookout is a must-do. On a clear day, the views are unforgettable.

"He's the Admiral of the ocean, The Lone Eagle in the sky,…read moreHe gave me my first sextant, And he taught me how to fly" (Jimmy Buffet) What did Vice Admiral Nelson do to deserve a 62-foot (19-meter) tall monument in the heart of Old Montreal? He was a British Naval hero and is remembered for his role in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar when the British Navy thoroughly destroyed the combined fleets of Napoleon's France and the Spanish navy. Sadly, Nelson was fatally shot during the battle, but he lived long enough to learn of his victory. His final words? "Now I am satisfied. Thank God I have done my duty." The English name of the monument is Nelson's Column. Montreal's oldest monument (1808) is a towering granite column topped by a statue of the admiral. Around the column's base you'll see carved nautical images of anchors, cannons, a sextant, a crocodile, and other memorable Nelson battles. As you approach Place Jacques-Cartier, you can't miss it. It's the tallest thing in sight.

The monument is situated at the north end of Place Jacques-Cartier, near Rue Notre-Dame. It is an important landmark in the city and a structuring element of Old Montréal. When the monument was erected, this site was one of the largest squares in the city. At the time called the New Market, this public market was considered to be Montréal's city core. Municipal and private buildings, such as the Exchange Coffee House, the Silver Dollar Saloon, the Jesuit church, the Customs Court, and the prison, were around it.

Located inside a park, with huge shady trees and benches in the front, and a children's playground and tennis courts in the back, this is a great place to pick up DVD films, books, audio books, or lounge around in and catch up reading back issues of "Vanity Fair", "Utne Reader" or dozens of other monthly magazines they receive. The collection they actually hold is rather small but get on the online "Nelligan" catalog system and suddenly all the holdings for the city of Montreal are suddenly at your fingertips. It's easy as pie to reserve titles from other libraries and them pick them up at a location most convenient to you. The entrance way is a bit of an art gallery and the exhibitions from local artists change quite frequently which is always interesting. Another great Verdun spot!
