This was one of our first state parks to visit as new campers and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! They were so welcoming! Our campsite was well equipped and perfect for our family. The dump site was brand new and especially user friendly! The scenery was gorgeous. We were there a little late in the season, but the lake was still beautiful and we enjoyed watching all the wildlife. read more

Incredibly disappointing that their boat rental is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. Wish that would've been mentioned on their website. Not everybody has time on Saturdays or Sundays to come out here to rent on top of having to pay $7 to get into this park. read more

Do not let your dog is the water here. They have algae that is poisonous to dogs! This can be scary for people that don't know this.

Staff is always friendly The park is well taken care of without looking too groomed. I love to run the trails and just get away here. There are camp grounds and horse trails, lakes and running paths and lots to do here. This is one of my escapes. read more

Potato Creek State Park - Cooking over the fire - Parks Near Me - North Liberty, Indiana

This is one of the best campsites we've stayed at! We planned a last minute camping trip and somehow got lucky with a spot last Friday night. We had to pay $9 for out of state "parking" fees but the attendant was so kind and happy we hardly noticed. He goes by Santa Greg and we was so easy to talk to. Genuinely brought a smile to our faces. You rock Santa!!!! Next we followed along to the check-in area where the attendants looked up our reservation and gave us the tag for our car and filled us in on everything else. We also got a nice map of the park here that included all of the trails in the campsite. There's an awesome bike trial here so we were bummed we didn't bring ours! She suggested a small hike nearby however though that worked perfectly for what we wanted. We stayed at the family campground. The sites in this area can be VERY open so I would definitely make sure you check the map and photos before booking. Our site we stayed at 214, was semi private and had a nice wall of trees. The best site in this area I think was 212, right next door. It was set back a bit with lots of trees bordering. We had electric at the site, picnic table, gravel driveway, and a fire pit. It worked out perfectly for my husband and I but may have been tight with another tent. The bathrooms were a two minute walk and they were incredible. I have VERY low expectations for campground bathrooms so this one blew them away. The stalls were clean, as well as the sink and showers areas. The soap dispenser was automatic and the hot water actually came out hot. The toilet paper was even replaced that night in a stall that was totally out. So impressed. Great work team! Other than being stung by a bee or some bee-like insect, our visit would have been perfect. Regardless, we would gladly come back to Potato Creek State Park and thank you for a relaxing night :) read more

Very clean great sites for camping. Almost all level. Bathrooms numerous and kept clean. Only drawback could have used dog bag stations.

So Memorial day weekend is rolling by and this little city slicker wants to get the heck out of town and spend some time sleeping under the stars. Oh where to go? Hmm how about the destination of my 500th review? Potato Creek makes for the perfect getaway. It's only about 2 hours from Chicago, just outside of South Bend, IN. According to the brochure "Native Americans once collected plants with potato-like roots on this area's creek banks. The early settlers' English translation for the name those people gave that plant was 'wild potato,' hence the name 'Potato' creek." That being said the park as a whole has some very nice surroundings. There is a lot of wooden land, a small lake and plenty of activities. The site that we were able to reserve was at the electric campground which meant that our two small tents were surrounded by tons of large RVs. The park was packed to the gills since it was the holiday weekend. A group of ladies even approached my friend while waiting in line for the showers asking her "Are you one of the campers in the tent? What's it like sleeping outside like that?". Oh America, how ironic you can be sometimes. Nevertheless we were happy with our little campsite, although it would have been nice if it was just a bit more secluded. The bathrooms were always clean and never crowded, probably because everybody has at least one bathroom in their RV. During the day you can find plenty of ways to occupy your time. There is a small beach to frolic in, fishing, paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, and rowboats to rent, bicycle and hiking paths, and horse trails. Or you can just sit around the campfire and sling back some beers. Unlike many of Illinois and Michigan's state parks there is no ban on drinking here. Of course, not like that has ever stopped me. Just remember to stock up on your booze before Sunday since Indiana still has a Blue Law. read more

There is something for everyone at Potato Creek. They have a great educational center, a lovely lake to swim and fish in, a wonderful camp ground, and awesome trails. I love going for strolls in Potato Creek in the autumn. Once we hiked back to check out the beaver dams and I saw an actual beaver, call me crazy but it was awesome! I've camped here once and had some noisy neighbors and a visit or two from a cheeky raccoon but you have that everywhere. Their facilities were maintained and clean. The spacing between the camp lots was generous and the stars were great! Bring bikes, swimsuits, and hiking boots for a fun filled weekend at any age. read more

Potato Creek isn't my favorite place. Its not a terrible place to hike, but the fishing is not very good. On the right weekend it can get overrun by people from Chicago who stress out ofer everything and are trying to pack 6 days worth of activities into a 3 day weekend....and heaven forbid if you are in the way. It isnt really wild, theres leftover roads in the woods and evidence of the farm that used to the on the property. Its just an average place to me. read more

One of my favorite state parks out of almost to 30 in Indiana. Their bike trail is invigorating and exciting as it twists and turns up and over the hills. The 4 mile path is nicely paved and well-kept. There are some of the coolest trees and boulders in this park along with quaint winding little streams. While there are a couple very large osprey nests it is said that bald eagles also inhabit this park. The park ranger or DNR is quite prominent but also friendly and helpful. read more

Nice for camping. There are a lot of nice activities available - bikes, boats, fishing, play grounds, trails and more. They have a general store if you forget items. The negative is the swimming area. The sand is dirty and the water is green. It is gross and I can't imagine it is safe to swim. read more

This is the 2nd time in a few years that we have camped at Potato Creek and I have nothing but great things to say about our experience. When we got to our campsite, I noticed the front tire on my wife's bike was flat and the nearest "supercenter" was at least a half hour away. I needed a tube and hit the road. I pulled into the General Store to try and save myself the trip on the off chance they would have the tube. I wandered around and didn't see anything, so I asked the clerk who guided me to their sporting goods section and there it was. They even had a air compressor that I could use. Great Service! In addition to that, the bathrooms, trails and grounds were very clean. The other thing I wanted to touch on was how quiet the campgrounds became after 11:00. So peaceful when you can get to sleep without screeching children and drunk hill-folk. read more

We have stayed at most of the state park cabins in Indiana. This is one of the closest to our home and we are so glad that we made it! The cabin sleeps 8. There is a bedroom with one double bed, two twins and two rollways. I begged my husband to push the twins together and make a king but he refused so we slept in the double. There is a large, 2-sink bathroom with the shower and toilet in a separate room. Remember to bring linens and towels. The living room/kitchen is huge! The table seats 6 and you could easily add two more spots on the ends although it would be a bit cramped. I should have moved the table away from the kitchen a bit but since it was just the two of us, it worked. There is a full refrigerator/freezer, microwave, electric oven, stove and sink. Unlike it's sister park cabins, there is no coffee maker or utensils. Always check what each park's cabins are stocked with to avoid bringing extra and missing a necessity. The screened in porch is huge. There are some rocking chairs and a picnic table. The porch would be great in nicer weather and has a wooded view. There is plenty of lighting from overhead fluorescents to lamps. The staff was warm, friendly and helpful. My husband attended a talk on Saturday about feeding the critters and we attended a talk on Sunday about Sarsaparilla tea. We, well, I made a sassafras bracelet. Fun! Our original plan was to stay 4 nights and eat in 3 of them. Between loving the park and all there was to do in South Bend, we made it 6 nights. The park isn't too large and has several great hiking trails. This is a great location for bird watching. Honestly and with deference to the other Indiana State Park cabins we love, these are the nicest cabins in the system. read more

The park is generally okay. But, the staffing at least in the horse area was VERY rude. We had gone in to see what the playground was like for my cousins who were coming to visit and got told VERY rudely and aggressively that if we weren't camping to get out (quote). Needless to say, we won't be camping there. Especially if my cousins wanted us to come visit. If we aren't camping with them, we aren't welcome. read more

The husband and I threw the bikes in the trunk and drove down here to go riding on the trails a few weekends back. The park was really gorgeous with all the fall colors. The bike trail was very nice and well-maintained. A beautiful little getaway for sure, and a lot nicer than I expected. I would definitely come back and check out the hiking trails, or do a little fishing in the lake. read more

Hey. It's the great outdoors and I always give that 5 stars! I love coming to the Indy State Parks and Potato Creek is not one to be overlooked. It is a very standard park with a large lake for fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities. The trails are very nice as well. I did a trail run while here and the trails were challenging enough for running and were easy to find. The dog and hubs enjoyed their time as well while I ran. I plan on coming back to do some training on the mountain bike trail (a 7.4 mile trail the goes through the northern side of the park) and maybe a dip in the lake-it was currently still mostly frozen!!! read more

I have been staying in Indiana state park campgrounds for over 30 years. This was the best managed park I believe I have ever been to, as far as state parks go. Restrooms and showers could use an update, but they were clean, everything worked, they have plenty of hooks, shelves and even a soap dish. The park is beautiful, the hiking trails are nice and the employee's were all very pleasant. I want to go back next year and ride on their mountain bike trails. Pokagon State park could learn a lot from visiting this park. They even had trash cans at the dumping station, what a novel idea. read more

Potato Creek is a really solid park in Indiana. I did a mountain biking race here a few years ago and had a ton of exposure to the trails. I enjoyed what the trails had to offer but wish they were a little bit longer. Nonetheless, for the Midwest potato creek is a great option for anyone looking to explore. read more

Perfect park for hiking, biking, horse riding, and getting on the water whether by canoe, kayak, or boat. There are a big variety of trails ranging from 1/2 to 4 miles and with varying degrees of difficulty. Even though I am in the park every week, I have not gotten bored with so many areas and trails to choose from. The park people are friendly and the grounds are well maintained with about an even number of modern and pit toilets well dispersed across the property. They plan to build a lodge here but until then the campgrounds and cabins are very nice. Paved bike trails are available for casual riders and there are separate trails for mountain bike riders too! Many birds are here including herons, egrets, osprey and eagles. Deer and rabbits are prevalent especially in the morning and evening hours. read more

Campground was full when we tried to stay, but I will definitely go back to camp and spend some time on the lake.
