Our experience with Our Lady of the Light church was at their annual BBQ. It was overall good with…read morea couple cons that we want to forewarn people so that you can be prepared. The Good: Free parking (the lots were full but we just parked on the road around the corner). A small fair atmosphere with live music, 12-15 vendor booths, kid's games, food, beer area ($3 Bud on tap), raffle, and lots of shade. The Con: Nowhere did they advertise that the "free" event of 1,600 lbs of slow-cooked meat was actually $10 for a small plate (scoop of dry tasting bbq meat w/ side of sauce, coleslaw, beans, dinner roll), which unfortunately did not fill us up. I recommend bringing cash for the food/drinks. We didn't bring much cash because it said free on all the advertisements and websites and we went to the event hungry! The Good: It is somewhat nice that you could get a tiny bbq sandwich for $4 after 3pm. On a cheaper food note, you can get nachos for $2, and snow cones, ice cream, and brownies for $1. A slice of pie was $3. The Weird Reaction: We also brought over a donation of apples and pears to give to the church. They gave a strange look and asked us to come back the next day to give it to them instead (like we wanted to give them a dirty diaper). Umm, if you don't want it, just kindly say so. We already drove far to get to Descanso and with our busy schedule, we didn't have time to go back and forth multiple times. We're givers but we also understand if you don't want it, just say so nicely, so we don't feel like we did something wrong. The Nice End w/ future recommendations: In general, the vendors seemed nice and some took credit cards, which helped because we ended up buying their wares. All in all, it was good to take a drive into nature and spend a few hours with friends in a small town atmosphere. We probably won't be back to the "free" bbq and recommend that the church put on their websites and ads in a more apparent fashion that "Food and Drink is available for purchase". No need to hide because the Truth will come out. Aaaa-men!

We stopped by the welcome booth, where a friendly couple gave us a brief overview of the church and answered our questions with a smile. They even gave us coupons for free coffee!
