I've taken time to think about this review as I've been out of school now for a few years so take…read morethe datedness of this with a grain of salt. I've looked into current offerings and have been in touch with many recent grads as well. I also align strongly with Yelp intended ratings and 3 stars is literally an OK rating so I don't hand out 4's and 5's to just anyone. If I could give Epicodus a 3.5 I probably would because it is OK but not something I would say is really GOOD or for everyone. Here's the Cliff's notes version: Yes code school will get to into tech, no it will not make you a developer or super hireable. Epicodus offers an ok middle-range priced education with some support but you have to be a self-motivated person and understand that tech is not hiring Bootcamp grads like they did in 2015 so be prepared to do a lot of work on your studies and portfolio in order to get a job. The points below cover: 1. my background and scenario 2. curriculum 3. internship 4. jobs 5. $$ I had an education and career before tech but needed a shift. I did a lot of self-study for years and in the end, needed a space and people to hold me accountable and Epicodus did that for me. I couldn't afford to jump all in right away so I did the intro night course and while that was financially a good route I still recommend doing all the courses as the full-time day package if you can swing it. I saved for years to do it and you should know it is VERY difficult to work while in this program as it takes most hours of your life for 6 months. In school, the courses have since been rewritten and that is GOOD as they were still fairly rough 5 years into the company's history. Now if you're really self-driven you COULD do all of the coursework yourself as it's online but having pairing buddies and a class you go with daily IS a huge help to staying accountable AND more similar to most jobs you will be going into. Teachers are underpaid and often former students, that is fine but I think for what you are paying it's difficult not to have a better education from the top. The internship was the real seller for me but the reality is it's often a hit or miss if you get something worth your education and if you've already worked in offices or on teams this section is not as important to you. What tech really needs is folks who are both technical AND good with other humans so if you need to learn that and this is early in your journey the school setting and internship may be helpful to you. They try to bring speakers in to show you that there are many more directions in the industry than just to become a developer and in all honesty, I think this education makes you a perfect fit for Support roles in highly technical companies which gives you a foot in the door. We all have different skillsets and they focus very heavily on becoming a developer so coming out of school I had little knowledge of ALL the amazing roles you could go into from engineering to product management, support or people managers! You have to do a lot of that research and learning on your own, be proactive in your journey. Epicodus is a tough one financially, it's cheaper than a lot of the top tier schools but you don't get the small class numbers and more hands-on education as those higher-cost options yet it's more than the cheap ones where you do it all yourself. So if you just need some accountability and a team to learn with this could be a good option for you. If you're super self-motivated the cheaper options will get you the same education for less and no difference in your attractiveness to companies looking to hire you. Some side notes... the facilities are great, clean, large and lots of computers. I appreciate the space they have created for you to learn especially if you don't have the tech yourself. I'm very happy to see they have jumped on board with the pay assistance models as an option for under or unemployed students looking to make the shift. So in the end, yes Epicodus gave me a few tools to get a job in tech and I was lucky to get a great gig right off the bat but quickly learned I was unprepared for the role. This has led to a few shifts and some better fits but I am not your average bootcamper, I am high human skills and low tech skills. People management is likely where I fit best into the industry and that is the goal. I encourage you to do your research and assess what is best for you financially and educationally and pick whatever school fits your end goals.

However, the perfect opportunity came to me with The Tech Academy, and I put everything I had into it. I really can't say enough great things about the experience. Great instruction. I learned a lot about a lot of different technologies. I had my ups and downs throughout the six months of the full-time program, but I ultimately walked away having learned and experienced more than I thought I would. I'd recommend this program to anyone who has even the slightest interest in it or passion for technology. You will have to invest a lot of time into it, but if you really want to do well, you will have all the tools, support, and instruction you need--and then some. One of the best educational experiences I've ever had.

Live projects were awesome and you get a feel for what the actual job will be like. I am not currently employed in tech, but will be using these skills to move up in my current company. Well worth it.

Currently I'm in the Dental Assisting program & although I would change a few things, I am pretty happy with the experience. The biggest issue was communication. Getting answers to simple questions often took days or weeks, if I received a response at all. Students were constantly left waiting for information that directly affected their education, schedules, and personal lives. The tutoring services were another major disappointment. I had more tutoring sessions canceled than completed. In my experience, appointments with Zeke Garcia and Lauren Hawana were frequently canceled with little notice, sometimes at the scheduled start time after I had already arranged my day around them. Tutoring was promoted as a resource for student success, but it was unreliable and often unavailable when needed most. What frustrated me most was the constant gap between what was promised and what was actually provided. We were told there would be tutoring, resources, guidance, career assistance, and support throughout the program. Time and time again, those promises were not fulfilled. The schedule changes created serious consequences for me personally. We were told that schedules would remain set for each term, which lasts approximately 3.5 months. Instead, schedules were repeatedly changed, making it nearly impossible to maintain stable employment while attending school. The constant changes ultimately caused conflicts with my job, and I lost my employment as a result. Losing my job also meant losing my health insurance and financial stability during an already demanding nursing program. I understand that occasional changes happen, but the lack of consistency, communication, and support had real-world consequences for students. Rather than helping students succeed, I often felt like I was being forced to navigate unnecessary obstacles on my own. I completed the program despite these challenges, but I would strongly encourage prospective students to carefully research this school and get any promises regarding schedules, tutoring, student support, resources, and career assistance in writing before enrolling.

Now I have to be honest with the racial tension, COVID-19 and life in general, from day to day you don't always know what to expect. It started last Friday when I made a call to Benson to clarify if my sons school schedule was available. The first voice I encountered was "Norma". This lady was so warm and friendly it scared me. She went on to explain to me in the most professional and warmhearted tone what I needed to do and who I needed to speak with. So as she transfers me, in my head I'm thinking breathe, because there is no way the second staff person I speak with is going to be even half as friendly, informative and professional as "Norma" and guess what, she wasn't, because it was her voicemail. So on Monday, after taking into consideration that I probably was the 100th caller Friday, I reached out to who Norma suggested. An low and behold, I hear the voice of yet another professional, friendly, kind and "how can I help you" voice on the other end of the phone. "Roi San" scheduled a time for us to meet and get everything straightened out. Tuesday my son and I go to the Benson campus @ Marshall and meet these two ladies in person. Same professional, kind, professionals I spoke to prior. Now this may not be a big deal to you, but its HUGE to me. This is a new school, new year, and a new phase of both our lives. There is so much going on in the world and it can literally make you paranoid about everything. It is very comforting and reassuring to know that your child is around people that show a genuine concern for their well being. First impressions are the best impressions and these two have made me a believer out of me. Now things may not always go as smooth, however its good to know that through all the hustle and bustle, Benson has a solid group of staff. I believe these two represent the staff in general and I applaud you all and sincerely thank you all for your dedication. Hats off to Roi San and Norma and I'm sure we'll see each other during the year. I hope and pray for a great school year for all and looking forward to a phenomenal four years for my child.
