Loved these guys! We had a sort of 'family reunion road trip' from Carlsbad Caverns to Utah. Two of my sisters, their kids, me and my kids and my parents. We spent 2 hours in the morning at Prairie Dog Glass and it was everyone's favorite part of Santa Fe, even over Meowolf. Just so fun to be hands on and the people are super cool. The glass pieces came out beautifully and are a super fun reminder now of our time together. I know a big group like ours is probably hard but the PDG folks made it work and were really cool. I even misunderstood the time and showed up 45 minutes late (!) and they still worked with us and moved things around so we could have the full 2 hours which was the perfect amount! read more

What an amazing experience! For anyone interested in glass blowing for the first time, Prairie Dog is the place to go. Prairie Dog is located in the back of the lot of the Jackalope Mercado in its own building. Attached to the studio is a small shop with glass pieces for sale. I got the class for my husband and me for his birthday. It's $225/hr (together) plus tax and tip. Between us, we could pick different pieces from a "menu" that added up to the hour limit. My husband chose a large display bowl and a drinking glass, and I chose a paper weight. Prairie Dog glass blower Matt worked with us one-on-one in turns through the experience. He has been working with glass for approximately 14 years. He said he initially got interested in glass when he visited Venice, Italy, with his family as a young teen. Through the experience, he explained the temperatures, why we were doing the steps, what tools we were using, and how the colors interacted. It's clear he really enjoys his work. We spun the glass, dipped it in the color selections, shaped it, and knocked it off the rod when directed to. After we finished the pieces, they were stored overnight in their oven to cool and solidify. We picked up the pieces the next morning. I can't say enough about how cool of an experience this was. Not only do you get to experience something unusual, but you get to bring your projects home with you to remind you of working on it. read more

Me and friends decided to try this glass blowing class. Neither of us had any prior experience (or knowledge) about how to make a glass piece. We each picked a different item. Our instructor was super kind and patient. The best part is, he explained each step, so we also learned the basics about glass-making. It is a super fun experience, and the finished products look fantastic (which would not have happened without our instructor's help). Highly recommend if you wanna try something different, explore the artistic side of you, and also go home with a unique hand-made piece (by YOU). The instructor will help with any complicated issues that arise during the process, so this is a low stress experience (with a high success rate). Prairie Dog Glass gave us an amazing experience in blowing glass. Russell was a natural teacher and knew where to challenge us and where to step in to support us for each of the stages. It was a legit studio where they create beautiful glasswork and allow newbies to be part of the process in creating their own pieces to take home the next day. Each piece of glass art needs to cool in a special oven for about a day, before they can go home with you. So plan accordingly; don't create your piece the day before you leave unless you plan to have everything shipped home. (They'll do that for you - if you need.) They're super organized so you can choose what kind of project(s) you can create in the timeframe you schedule. You choose your color schemes. The teachers help you each step of the way so you're the artist, but you're guided and safe. We're so glad we went to Santa Fe and chose Prairie Dog Glass. read more

We did a glass blowing class for five adults. Spooner was our instructor. He was super friendly, informative, polite and knowledgeable! We really enjoyed being taught by him! :) Our glass pieces came out super beautifully!! You do varying degrees of work solo and assisting the instructor so that the piece comes out nicely. It is super hot when you're working on the glass and I would recommend pulling your hair up/back if it's past shoulder length. Also, they supply safety glasses for you. The class takes about 15 minutes or so per glass piece and you can choose from many colored glass options to personalize them. To cool properly you have to pick it up the next day OR get it shipped to you. They package the glass really nicely and safely! I also bought an adorable ghost ($25) glass piece. The class was $195 per hour. You can do as many projects as you want in that hour. For us it would've been a max of 6 items since they take 10-15 minutes each. Less people could do many more. Considering their prices for their professional pieces and you're being instructed by and assisting a professional, it is a very fair price!! read more

Russell was a consummate professional and balanced letting us lead as much of the process as possible while also stepping in when needed to ensure our artwork was created properly. Cool little "shop-within-a-shop" in the Jackalope complex. This venue features a glass blowing demonstration area (which also offers classes) along with some really fabulous art glass for sale. We watched one of the artists assist a student for a while as another instructor walked us through the process verbally. The glass chili peppers come in an array of colors and we were so tempted to bring some home. Prices are a bit high but you are getting one of a kind pieces. What a fun day learning how to blow glass! Took Erika for her birthday and she made a beautiful bowl, a flower, and I made a blue chili. Her father who was also with us made a REALLY nice looking red chili, which we debated asking them to sandblast to give it a frosted glass look. The person teaching us, Steffen, was great! He explained everything really well and taught us how to handle the rod and glass and answered any and all of our questions while we were working. Fantastic family experience this Thanksgiving. Everyone (10 of us) were able to choose what they wanted to create with the help of the Prairie Dog experts--who were fantastic. Fun, knowledgeable, quick, and safe! There is no doubt that glass heated to over 2000 degrees is a little scary but they made it enjoyable and safety was their number one concern. Actually, Pat explained he is more likely to get a cut from boxes than A burn of any type. You'll need to wait 24 hours to pick up the glass art. It takes some time to "freeze." They can ship your work for you big young pose which makes it super easy and convenient if your worries about weight on flights on the way back home. This was one of the highlights of our trip, we had a super time... Instructors were amazing, taking time and patience in particular with the seven-year-old grandson... We picked up our pieces the next day and absolutely love them, if there was one complaint it was that a particular green turn yellow in the kiln,It would have been nice to been told that as yellow it's not a color that was wanted... I'm creating this review to uncover a buried treasure. I hope in doing so Chris Donnelly and all his friends at Prairie Dog Glass get the attention and support from the Yelp Community that they so richly deserve. Prairie Dog Glass is buried inside a place called Jackalope Marketplace in Santa Fe New Mexico. If you have always dreamed of participating in Blowing Glass but have absolutely no experience, this is definitely a wonderful place to go. Blowing glass has been on my Boyfriend's bucket list for years. He and I get very little time away together (as I am a single mother of 3 and he runs his own business) so time is precious to us and not something to be wasted. Thus I did my research before we left and Chris responded quickly to my inquiry (even though he was getting married that week!) and answered all my questions. For $150 my boyfriend got a one-on-one lesson in glass blowing and walked away with the experience he had always dreamed of in a Hot Shop. Chris was more than accommodating in asking us what we wanted to create and what colors we had in mind.. He stepped in when things got tricky so we could come away with a finished piece to show our friends but still allowed my Boyfriend lots of hands on experience. $150 might sound like a lot of money to some of you..... but sometimes dreams cost a little bit more than what you would spend for routine fun.....Chris let me take all the pictures I wanted of the entire process and in doing so both Boyfriend and I came away with a greater appreciation for the art and a feeling of fulfillment for having checked off a top item on his Bucket List. We don't live in New Mexico and were visiting Santa Fe for the first time to see the Art Galleries. Chris was very diligent in safely wrapping and sending our two pieces back to California after they were cooled and ready to ship. In my opinion Prairie Dog Glass is the Gem and Jackalope is just something surrounding it...yet PDog is buried in Jackalope's Yelp Reviews... This place is a destination to itself for the Glass Blowing Class with Chris!!!! Sometimes Art lives within the creative process even more so than what is created (though we are happy with our vase and paperweight) it was the experience that we will never forget. Chris's patience, knowledge, skill and great sense of hospitality will make you feel welcome and comfortable in the shop. We will be telling the story of our experience for years to come.
