I bought a prairie seed mix for dry sand. The result is a field of 80% Rudbeckia fulgida, which is not native to my area. Pollinators show no interest. I'll be ripping it out. Buyer beware: Shop for your own ecotypes, meaning locally from sellers you trust. And don't accept seeds or plants from any source where the botanical name is not supplied. read more

I received my expensive plants in very bad condition. I will never buy plants from them again. The worst nursery ever.

This is the second year we ordered live plants from Prairie Moon. I love the idea of locally grown native plants and, if I was a bit closer to them, would drive there to get them in person. Unfortunately, that's not in the cards, so we ordered trays with multiple varieties for my butterfly garden and our native gardens. Last year (2002), in addition to the tray of live plants, we ordered several bare root species. We planted then in accordance with the directions, and not a single one came up. Most of the live plants survived the year, but many did not come back this year. In February of this year(2023), when the catalog came, we decided to try again with live plants only - ordered flowering plants for the butterfly garden and a few native grasses for the native garden. We were notified that they would be shipped during a certain week, and then notified again with tracking information when they actually shipped. The shipper's tracking site was not updated regularly, so we had no idea when the live plants would arrive. After 5 days, with no updates on the shipper's website site, I was concerned and emailed Prairie Moon, who said that all was well, and plants should still arrive soon and be on good shape, even with no watering or light for almost a week. Also, I noted that the plants were NOT coming from Minnesota (locally) but rather Illinois. When the plants did eventually come (after total of 7 days), I opened the box immediately. The photos show the mess I found in the box. The tall plants were bent and broken, and the other were dried out, the grasses looked brown and dead. We immediately repotted the flowering ones into bigger pots and tried to give them TLC and since some have recovered enough to plant, some have not. The grasses were planted and have not recovered. I feel that we wasted $200+ on plants that were not locally grown, and did not arrive in the condition we expected. After two years of disappointment, we will not be dealing with Prairie Moon again. read more

I wrote them several emails and they only reply with a variety of excuses why seeds don't grow. read more

It's not an exaggeration to say that Prairie Moon Nursery (and Doug Tallamy) has changed my life and the way I garden. Their website is a master class in gardening with native species and their staff are knowledgeable, helpful and responsive. I've purchased seed, bare root plants and plugs from them and all have done well. I've replaced more than half of our turf with Prairie Moon seeds and plants and have a wide variety of birds, bees, butterflies, moths and insects in our mini-wildflower meadow. I'd like to give them minus 0 stars. I ordered all seeds and planted them according to directions. I live in western NC, we get plenty of sun, warmth and rain in spring/summer. The soil stinks (red clay) so I amended it and have a lot of other plants and flowers growing, some from seed, some I bought as plants. I've been gardening for 25 years. Anyway, I ordered spotted bee balm -it wasn't not spotted at all, just regular wild bee balm, pale lavender color, tall with unimpressive flowers. You can find it growing on just about any roadside or in a ditch. They only sell one kind of columbine which are supposed to be red and yellow, only 3 grew, one died before it flowered and the other two came out solid dark purple color. Pretty but very weird and not at all what I ordered. The western sunflower is growing well, flowering & doing great. The flowers are small though and the plant gets tall and bends over, sometimes lays right down, especially after it rains (not Prairie Moon's fault but this isn't something they tell you in the description of it on their website). Haven't seen hide nor hair of anything else I planted: tall thimbleweed, prairie alumroot, showy beardtongue, goldenrod, blue aster, calico aster, bittersweet or blue violet. If there are a few of any of these growing out there somewhere they certainly haven't shown themselves by flowering yet and it's now late July. So I planted 11 varieties of seed, 3 grew but only 2 grew well, and 2 were not even what I ordered however. 8 varieties have not grown. Since having this experience with their seeds I've read a few other reviews where people say their seeds do poorly. They shouldn't even be selling seeds in my opinion, they rip off their seed-buying customers. They have nowhere on their website to leave a review of any kind and I'm not surprised. read more

Great selection of native plants at very reasonable prices. This is my favorite native plant and seed company. Very good information filled catalog for anyone getting their feet wet in native plant gardening. Shipping costs are very reasonable especially for seed. Once I had a fairly large order and I forgot to include the one seed I wanted to order. I called to see if I could order it and maybe get a break on their shipping costs.
