John, Roberta and the entire staff were attentive, thorough and responsive. My mother's funeral occurred in 3 states which is not simple, and John had to coordinate with another funeral home. The administrator of the funeral home in Maine that we worked with went out of their way to tell me that John had been a pleasure to work with which was unexpected, but not surprising. The facility in Cumberland is beautiful with a unique image projection system and piano on site for use in the service, and John has resources for everything we needed. We are very grateful.

They also helped us creat a slide show and it came out wonderfully. My poppy was in good hands here and I'm so thankful. This is a beautiful place to say goodbye to the ones you loved.

My previous experiences with them had been completely positive but that was with the previous owners - the Holt family. Under these new owners, the team provided attentive service and seemed to truly care but soon after the funeral, the owners resorted to rude and threatening phone calls. I honestly thought they had hired a collection agency! In the end, they made it perfectly clear that they were only interested in the money which as I mentioned can frequently take some time with complicated estates. If you are bereaved and grieving, then be warned and look for a service home with more integrity.

The whole graveyard is filled with great old trees that gives the cemetery a very park like feel. Most of the memorials are rather modest but some are unique and beautiful. None seem especially old and many that I saw were from the 19th and 20th centuries. They don't seem to plow the roads in the winter so it's quite a hike up the hill in the deep snow but it does have some nice views from the top. I was recently notified what they did to a family member, so I looked things over. I thought this place was great, UNTIL I realized they charged us for things not legal, not purchased, and not disclosed! I called the crematory, medical examiners in 2 different states, and the insurance company. They informed me of the REAL prices, the LAW, and how Dyer-Lake used our money to fund their own interests without disclosing it. It wasn't theirs to use! To this date, they have refunded 4 checks, admitting guilt, returning (dragging it out slowly) almost what they owed us, but not fully. They refuse to refund us for merchandise we never bought. They refuse to itemize the bill. They refuse to tell us what "basic professional services" cover, since we never had a "service", and so many other fees were charged on top of basic...things like transportation, storage, paperwork, drivers, removal of pacemaker, ect. They charged us for 2 medical examiners in 2 different states. One owner said it was the LAW because the person died in one state and was buried in another. The other owner said that was a mistake. BUT they did it twice! 16 months apart! Once, it "might" be a mistake, but twice is how they run their business until you catch them. I could describe each thing, but the checks are proof enough.. BE WARY and do your homework! A smile, a hug, and making you feel like and old friend means nothing when you find out the truth. Its disgusting and deceitful to do this. Its been SIX MONTHS and they still owe us for one more thing.

The gravestones are hard to read due to wear and tear, but you can easily find loved ones online and where they are buried inside. There's a small gate open every day for visitors to wander.

There is some significant history in this burying ground and it's so often overlooked - the first…read moredocumented Chinese person in the US is buried here!! His tombstone is very high quality and extremely well preserved with a beautiful memento mori - an excellent stop when exploring Boston for sure! You'll find this burying ground along the south side of the Boston Common, entrance is along Boylston Street. And while it's smaller than some of the other more famous cemeteries, it's very much worth a visit - especially to see the grave of Chow Manderien! Chow was a teenager from Guangzhou that sailed with merchant sailor John Boit JR - who helped pioneer trade between the US and China. Some websites say his actual name was Zhou Libei but some don't mention it so I'm not sure. Chow began his journey at 17 years old and unfortunately died after arriving here at only 19 years old in 1798 - he fell from the mast of one of the ships. John Boit thought so highly of him and was so upset about his accident that he provided an extremely high quality headstone that has endured the ages, much better than many of the others in the cemetery. And also maintained records of him handed down through generations of his family! This part of the Boston Common seems much less crowded and is right next to Chinatown. I'm absolutely shocked that Wikipedia doesn't mention anything about this significant piece of history in the listing for this burying ground - seems to me to be the most significant burial here!
