Ballymascanlon House Hotel - Cute room in the resort

So this is not a bed-and-breakfast- well I mean, I guess it is in the fact that you can both sleep…read morethere and eat breakfast but what this is is a beautiful resort with grounds that look like they're out of an episode of Downton Abbey. This is the kind of place that kind of typifies old world class, but still has a family, friendly atmosphere with the giggles of kids running through the trees. The breakfast is a buffet style, and there are different activities throughout the resort. The only one we checked out was the pool just due to our time constraints, and it was lovely, more on the pool below (note that a swim cap is required, they have them at the pool check-in desk to purchase). unfortunately, the outdoor hot tub was closed while we were there and speaking to other guests, it sounds like it's been closed for the past six months, but it's supposed to be up and running soon. Wheelchair accessibility: There are accessible parking spots, but not a ton, there were never any available when we were coming or going. There is an accessible entrance to the left of the main entrance that has a ramp, there are two sets of double doors that require some maneuvering to get through. Much of the resort is carpeted, but there are ramps everywhere. we stayed in an accessible room that was great and roomy, the only issue was the angle of the shower bench made it such that significant leg strength is required to be able to actually sit on the shower bench. Accessibility at the pool: the staff were super helpful and accommodating. There is a ramp to get down to the pool deck, and then stairs with a handrail to get down into the pool. I didn't see a pool lift on site. It also looked like there were stairs to come into the pool from the locker room and so I'm not sure if there would be an accessible entrance into the locker room, I didn't use the locker room since we had a room. The indoor hot tub was up some steps with a handrail as well, and there didn't seem to be a step free path to get over to the indoor hot tub area.

And events at the hotel can be loud when you're looking for some peace and quiet in Dundalk. Breakfast was included with our room but it wasn't very impressive - some fried eggs gone cold on a buffet, limited healthy choices otherwise. Unfortunately, I had some bad luck when it came to my stay. When my plug adapter went missing, the hotel provided one. However, it didn't work. By the time I figured that out, it was too late at night to roll down to reception for another one so I just made do. A wedding at the event space meant that drunk partygoers were roaming the hotel grounds, singing and yelling, until the wee hours of the morning. Although I had booked a non-smoking room, and although I was thrilled that the window and balcony door could be opened to let in fresh air, my neighbor decided to smoke on his balcony (continuously) until 3 am. In a desperate attempt for sleep, I called the front desk. Once, the call rang without answer. And on the second try, they hung up on me. Great service and help, guys. I probably wouldn't stay here again.

Although I did find the Carrick -a-rede rope bridge and Dunluce Castle slightly more interesting The causeway is a nice stop for a midday meal particularly because they allow you to use your parking pass for a rebate on the restaurant bill. Just remember to bring your stub in. Ireland is not really known I think for its iced coffee drinks so probably steer clear of ordering an Iced latte. Not horrible, but not great. The food however, was pretty tasty. We got the Carmelized onion and goat cheese tart And the Pan seared Rockville farm chicken. Both were done well, and the price is paid. If you can eat in the back of the restaurant, it probably has slightly more character as the front has windows only looking out to the parking lot. Parking is free for guest of the hotel. Otherwise you pay 10 pounds.

We got a triple room with terrace, and the terrace overlooks grazing pastures and a breathtaking coastal cliff trail. A great place to stay if you want to see Giant's Causeway and also a nice "home base" if you want to explore Northern Ireland.

Yesterday was a sad, sad day. A milestone in my dining…read moreexperiences. I still have not gotten over the shock of the whole thing.... ????? I WAS UNABLE TO FINISH MY MEAL HERE. Why, I hear you cry, poor food? Nope. Cold dinner? Nope. A bug in my spuds? Nope. You will never guess.... The portions were just too enormous even for a large bellied hippopotamus like me, actually I think the whole thing was a trick of some kind, conjuring gone haywire?? Maybe a fairytale like the magic porridge pot that kept overflowing with porridge...well the spuds just kept on coming, never in my greedy piggy wiggy life did I leave such a size of spuds left on my plate. Sob. Is it all over for me? Have I turned into one of those people who say 'Oh I just eat 2 squares of chocolate at a time'......2 SQUARES?? Feckin lunatics. This was a great dining experience, you had to wait just the right amount of time so you know the food if cooked fresh and it arrived in all its humongous glory well presented, hot and delicious. I had the salmon with champ, carrot and parsnip mash with garlic buttered prawns, very tasty indeed. The boss opted for the Downshire burger (half a cow) and chips with a massive pile of salad on the side. Phew! It was well worth the visit. The other BIG plus in my book is a clean bathroom, and this place had the wonderful aroma of mild bleach as soon as you open the bathroom door, this cannot be beaten in my book in public restrooms, cleanliness is next to Godliness my mum used to say (usually when scrubbing my two dirty paws with carbolic soap) A great spot for a meal, centrally located on the main Street in Banbridge and free parking behind.

The room rates were reasonable - i think it was about £80 per room. The bar and night club part of this hotel are very popular with the older 20 -30 year olds in this area. The nightclub is free entry before 11. The bar prices are reasonable and not really too different from anywhere else in the town. There are rarely special offers on alcohol. The food is also lovely, however the last time i had food here was about 2 years ago. Would recommend for a night out.

We had 2 large bedrooms, a kitchen, dining area and a large living room. We also had a washer/dryer in the cottage. Our cottage came with a fully stocked mini bar at no extra cost. We were given snacks at no extra cost. Both the drinks and snacks were replenished daily. There was a tv in the living room. All rooms were fully furnished. The kitchen had pots, pans, and dishes. Housekeeping came daily to clean. Beds were so comfy. Bathroom was very big. We were provided with robes and flip flops. Now let's talk about Thermal Spa Village. There were so many hot tubs, saunas and meditation rooms everywhere in the village. I never felt like it was too crowded. It was open from 8:00am-10:00pm daily. There is a river running through the property very scenic and peaceful. I don't think we even went to every spa steam room or sauna. It was just so much to experience. Now the spa also offered other services at an additional price. Breakfast was included with the purchase of our cottage. There were two restaurants that served breakfast. Our favorite was The Conservatory because they offered a la carte breakfast items and it was beautiful inside. They also have a Fratellis Italian restaurant on site and bar/ pub on site as well. So as mentioned my sister got married here. She was married in a small chapel called the Ghost House. Then they had the reception in the 4 Seasons reception hall adjacent to the hotel. It was very nice. There was comfortable seating. The food for the wedding was absolutely amazing. I enjoyed every bite and I had the vegetarian dishes. We were told on the way in we could eat at the bar or restaurant, with a kid I wanted to eat in the restaurant. Went in to the restaurant and the lady tried to force us in to the bar. The food was nice enough. Good sized portions, tasty - mum loved her fish and chips. But after a lengthy wait to flag someone down for the child's ice cream and the bill I had to walk up and pay, child lost patience, not even the bribe of ice cream worked. Even when I checked out (at the front desk cause they only have one card reader) the girls had a talk between themselves and ignored me. Service and personality is everything. This place has none.

Rice also good with a lime and pear chutney. Only let down was the naan which was very shop bought! On to pudding! I shared the apple creme brûlée with cinnamon doughnuts and caramel ice cream and the pecan and choco brownie with coulis and vanilla ice cream. Amazing and also massive portions I've come away completely full! Would recommend if have to stay in area but as on work trip and not much atmosphere couldn't give it more than 3*
