Went to Prep & Pastry on a Sunday morning after a hike, arriving around 9am. It is a large, bright restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating, located in Scottsdale and the edge of Phoenix, near the mall. The area is filled with restaurants ranging from casual spots to more upscale options. I started with the lavender matcha latte, which had just a touch of sweetness and was comforting. For my entrée, I ordered the Cast Iron Duck Confit ($19). I was deciding between a couple of dishes, and our waitress recommended this one, which was an excellent suggestion. The dish featured braised duck, shallots, spinach, Cabernet-braised cherries, cherry goat cheese mousse, potatoes, and two eggs over easy. The portion was generous, hearty, and packed with flavor. The duck was tender, moist, and cooked perfectly. The Cabernet-braised cherries and cherry goat cheese mousse were unique additions that gave the dish a creative twist. There were plenty of potatoes, and I ended up ordering a side of chipotle aioli, which paired really well with them. I have really enjoyed the chipotle sauces I have tried around Phoenix, they seem much more flavorful and spicier than many of the versions I've had on the East Coast. Overall, this was an excellent brunch in a clean, open, and inviting space. Service was friendly and attentive, and our food arrived quickly despite it being a busy Sunday morning. They also have an attached café and bakery with an impressive display of pastries, although we did not have room to try any this visit. I would definitely recommend Prep & Pastry and look forward to returning on a future trip. We were staying at The Scott and walked here twice for an amazing brunch...while our room was getting cleaned...and the next morning for a pastry and drink. This is our first time at this location. We had enjoyed the Tucson location years ago. Overall it was ok. The poblano Benedict lacked flavor even though there were poblano peppers in it. My new favorite thing is being able to walk to new restaurants to try. Prep had been in my list for a while. The wait was minimal and a bit noisy. My girlfriend and I shared an egg sausage and cheese Sammie on a croissant and the Smokes Salmon Hash bowl. The hash was really good with the house horseradish (very little kick but good flavor) veggies potatoes and eggs. Very little kick but good flavor. The roasted potatoes were huge and seasoned really good. The croissant to me wasn't that soft, the only downside. For drinks I got a black coffee and house Bloody Mary with a side car of the house beer I think the coffee stout, nice touch! They have a separate coffee bar area off to the left side as you enter where you can grab a drink and/or pastry to go, although I saw plenty of people dining in when I visited. The interiors are tastefully done as is expected in this part of Scottsdale. As I wasn't looking for a meal, I had a white chocolate mocha latte and a sticky pecan cinnamon roll that caught my eye in the pastry display. The white chocolate mocha latte (4.5/5) was of high quality and tasted great without much bitterness, satisfying my caffeine fix. The sticky pecan cinnamon roll (5/5) was a high quality cinnamon roll with just the right amount of sweetness, accented just a little bit by the pecans for a wonderfully delicious pastry experience. Service was quick and friendly from the male barista there. While I can't speak to the dine-in food experience, I would recommend Prep and Pastry for decent pastries and caffeinated beverages in Scottsdale. read more

This place is an absolute gem here in Scottsdale... one of the best breakfast places you can visit in the city. Located right across the street from Olive & Ivy, I suggested this place this past week to my mom and my sister for late brunch, and the three of us wound up there around 1pm on a Monday. We got there and were greeted immediately by the guy working the bar, Jordan was exceptional. He was super kind and helped us to navigate the menu a little easier. My mom got her go to: biscuits and gravy, and it was served piping hot in a big boat of a bowl. She also got a mimosa that she was very pleased with. I got a honey lavender matcha as my drink, which was very creamy and tasty. I got the steak and egg sandwich, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The bread was nice and crunchy and the steak wasn't chewy in the slightest, it all melted in my mouth. My sister got the salmon Benedict, which she wanted over easy but came out a little over hard. That didn't matter much, she still put it down. She got a raspberry cream latte, that was better than the matcha that I got. The chandelier on the ceiling was notably huge and gave this place some beautiful decoration. The pastries all looked super yummy, and our guy Jordan blessed us with a few of them, they were so yummy. Overall, our experience in general here was super positive and I'm glad we found a new neighborhood brunch spot, it may just be one of the best options in the area. I got the Simple Breakfast, but the portion of scrambled eggs looked smaller than usual. They were still running their winter drinks menu, so I got the Cranberry Matcha. I expected a garnish or something to make it look festive, but it didn't come with anything. I didn't really taste cranberry in it either. We were hoping they'd have their delicious pop tarts, but sadly didn't see any at the pastry counter. Our waiter was attentive initially. After we finished eating, he asked if we wanted anything else. We were considering some of the pastry options, so he walked away to give us time to think, but then he never came back. We kept chatting for a bit waiting for him to come by. Finally I was able to flag him down to get our check. I instantly loved the ambiance here with the airy feel and high ceilings. There's a coffee bar area that specifically for takeaway orders and where you can order your coffee and pastries and take them home or enjoy them at some of the tables outside. The indoor seating area is full service. Our server was friendly and was prompt with our orders and checking up on us, but kind of disappeared towards the end when I wanted to order some of the pastries to go - maybe he was on break? I ordered the Black Cherry Matcha which was pretty good, but I couldn't really distinguish any black cherry flavor. We also shared the Southwest Croissant Sammie and Green Chili French Toast. I know...green chili french toast sounds weird, and I was about to pass on it, but we decided to order it anyway and I'm so glad we did because it was soooo good! It was made with a green chili bread and had two eggs on top, and the combo of sweet and savory was delish - kind of reminds me of jalapeño corn bread! The croissant Sammie was bigger than I expected and was great too. I loved the potatoes that came with it. The pastries I bought were so good too! I mean to not minimize the bread and the butter it had because it was in my opinion perfect.
