Spotty is a painted dog on the side of Route 165. If you don't know it's there, it's tempting (and…read moreworth it) to turn around after doing a double take. The road is pretty quiet but with a higher speed limit. Spotty was originally painted in 1935 by Stanley Zigtorac.

The little village of North Stonington (once called Milltown) is small and quaint. This grist mill wheel was built by Frank Limpert in the early 1800's and the house is known as the Andrew Baldwin House. Limpert also built the series of dams across the Pendleton Hill Brook to access water more quickly in case of fires.

Howard Brown Park is very pretty, with a gazebo and awesome maritime scenery. The marker remembers Norwich's maritime heritage and its huge role in shipping and trading, leading CT to be an early advocate of establishing Colonial naval forces. The two-sided marker was dedicated in 1977, and is in pretty good condition.

This was a great history maker that was interesting to read about. I'm not from CT so it's fun to…read morelearn about the state's history. This spot is quiet, relaxing and looks over the harbor. There were lots of ducks and I spotted a look which was fun to watch dive into the water over and over again and see where he'd pop up in the water. I could have sat their all afternoon. The only negative thing was the amount of people smoking and littering alone the deck. It was frustrating that people did not care to take care of their own city. Overall, I loved it.

It tells the story of the land that became Norwich, CT. The Norwich Green became a hotspot for "trade, merchandise, public business, military exercises, shows, sports, festivals", and eventually political demonstrations against the ruling British. It's a 2-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. There is a different inscription on each side. The marker was dedicated in 1971 and is in pretty good condition.

We make it a habit to drive down to the Historic District in Westerly and walk around, enjoying the…read moreold building styles, stopping by the farmers market, eating in the many restaurants, strolling through Wilcox Park. This town is a wonderful reminder of the old towns New England was once filled with. The center of the historic district is the monument at the intersection of High Streets and U.S. Rt. 1, just near the Westerly Library. There is on-street parking available throughout the area. This is the place to begin your visit by walking the streets, lined with one-off store fronts, small 'mom and pop' restaurants and beautiful old architecture. It really makes a fun morning adventure. Once you have satisfied your curiosity there, follow the river south along Main Street, to the Farmers Market near the intersection of Union Street. It runs June - October, 10am - 2pm on Thursdays. Check out the state's DEM website for updated info. After picking up some farm fresh foods for lunch or dinner, follow Union Street up the hill back toward Wilcox park and there is a nice brick tower on the left. I'm not sure what the building is used for today, but from the look of the stone foundation, it's quite an old edifice. Continue straight on, across the street into Wilcox Park for a nice stroll under trees. Maybe picnic on the food you purchased at the farmers market, enjoy the magnificent old trees or sit by the pond. There are signs around the park telling the history of the area. If you live in state, try to stop by throughout the year to see it in all it's seasons. If you are visiting the state, be sure to make it one of your stops while visiting the area. Voluntown is so old that it was settled by veterans that had volunteered to fight in the…read moreNarragansett Indian War. Ever heard of it? Nope, me neither. It was fought in the 1670's!! In their honor, the settlement was officially named Voluntown in 1708. It built its first schoolhouse in 1737 and a textile industry was in full swing by the early 1800s. Dedicated in 1977, this is a two-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It's located on the eastbound side of Route 138. It's a two-sided marker with different text on both sides. The marker's condition is average- with most of the signs in pretty good shape with small areas of peeling and the onsets of deterioration.
