The grilled cheese here is one of the best I have had outside of the US. I wasn't expecting it, so it came as wonderful surprise! I ordered a cheese sandwich that I had seen on the display, prepackaged, and when they asked me if I wanted it heated, I said yes. The result was this marvelous grilled sandwich which was simply divine! You have to pay a Euro in coin to use the bathrooms at this establishment! Just an FYI, NOT a complaint! Anything to support a wonderful place like this!

It seems that a corporate book-selling giant coming in and running local family store out of business is sort of becoming a cliché. Now, no one has closed the door yet on local competitors like Buchladen Neusser Str. The situation did seem eerily similar though to the 1998 movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The positive of Mayersche is that you know what you're getting when you walk in. If you've been inside any Mayersche before then you know already what this one is like. Reasonable selection of titles, decent prices, and mediocre service. If you idealistically shop according to principles, then there are many other nostalgic, family-owned establishments right down the street. If you're a cheapskate and low prices are your thing, then nothing beats the Internet. But, if you're into consumeristic, instant gratification, then Mayersche is your kind of store.
