As my friend Maruxinha would say, it's like getting a free dinner! Cafeteria Maracaibo was one of our first stops on our bar/ tapas hop for the evening. It is conveniently located along the Praza de Compostela, which is very close to all of Vigo's most happening discos and clubs, and therefore makes the cafeteria an attractive place for a low-key drink or bite to eat before dancing the night away. It's also a fantastic place for people-watching; Vigueses (the proper term for people from Vigo) young and old stroll along the plaza for a relaxing evening walk on a beautiful summer day. If the weather is nice, definitely make it a point to be seated outside on the plaza! All we ordered were a few glasses of Albarino; the food that was brought with our drinks was so substantial that it was absolutely unnecessary to order from the regular menu. We were presented with a large basket of fresh bread (and Galician bread is the best there is in the world...I get so hungry just thinking about the crackly crust and the airy and fluffy interior) and each of us received a substantially sized plate of ternera gallega (some of the highest quality beef/ veal from the region) prepared in a red wine and onion sauce. It was a little overcooked and maybe not the best pairing with a glass of white wine, but it was just the fuel we needed to get us through an evening of fun and dancing. Our waiter was your typical man-of-few words Galician guy; he wasn't overly friendly, but he was always to-the-point and there when you needed him.

I guess because life is more outside or the weather does not allow flowers to last very long. So finding this little shop was a delight. It does not offer anything really special, but suited my cause. Which was to find a nice orchid to give as a gift. After I chose the flower and the pot it took quite a while before the woman came back with the plant. "I am just going to prepare it for you," she said. When she came back it was decorated in a particular way with ribbons and all. Before I gave the gift I removed all that extra stuff. Matter of taste. I came across this more often in Spain. Where I am used to a bunch of flowers just being beautiful by simply binding them together, here in Spain they can make quite an effort sculpturing them in a way that we would only find them on a coffin at a funeral... :-( So when you ever choose a few flowers you want to put together ask them kindly not to make any effort :-)

We stayed here for a couple of days during a road-trip throughout the country. This was absolutely…read moreone of my favorite stops! The grounds are breathtaking and our room was right in front of the beach overlooking the ocean. The sun does not set until well after 9-10pm so we enjoyed being able to walk down to view the sunset from the beach or from our large balcony. The service was the best and the staff went above and beyond. If we ever find ourselves back in this part of Spain this will be my go to. Make sure to make the trip out to Cies Island if you are in Vigo! The island is gorgeous and also has some fantastic hiking trails and camping.
