My companion's pizza was just adequate, bland and sparsely decorated with only the most basic toppings. My "lemonade" was flat, and my "traditional" lasagne was not bolognese, but white. Very, very white. The only colour in my dish was one tablespoon of tomato sauce that was added on top just before serving. Otherwise the dish looked like it had been in the oven since the night before, and the only two noodles I found inside were cooked to mush. I didn't detect any garlic, onion, or spice in the entire dish, other than a hint of nutmeg. The white cheese inside was sweet. The white sauce was sweet, sweet enough to make me wonder if it was a dessert sauce added by mistake. In light of Franco's popularity, it's possible they were having an off night. I may go back and try it again, but it will be a while before I can get past the memory of that lasagna.

A medium sized cafe-come-deli-come-bistro come-wine bar, the decor was all about the rustic cream & slate and actually reminded me a lot of the fabby Urban Angel in Edinburgh. As is fairly common in this type of establishment these days, they also sell a wide selection of artisan cheeses, breads, cakes & groceries like "00" flour and fancy crackers. Glad to have arrived when we did in snaring the last table, I ordered the traditional bruschetta and my husband ordered the Cajun chicken sandwich special. For £10.95, I was pretty intrigued about what the bruschetta was all about. What arrived was certainly a talking point - a GIANT juicy mound of freshly prepared tomato, gooey mozzarella drizzled with pesto & olive oil on some very tasty in-house bread was presented on a wooden board. It certainly had the wow factor and was perfect for a warm spring day. Whilst I would say £10.95 is pretty steep for bruschetta - giant or not - it really hit the spot and was extremely tasty. I guess I would have expected to pay around that for a salad bowl and so happy enough given the kind of place it is. As Americans would say, Jim Jack's has a pretty solid fish and chips game. It's not earth-shattering food but it's tasty, and it will definitely hit the spot for hungry patrons. The haddock is fresh and the batter is excellent (the haddock supper has traditional batter while the breaded haddock supper has a breadcrumb batter, both good).
