Getting medical service is TOUGH as an expat in Italy…read more There is an assumption that medical service outside of the US is overall better, but that is not always the case, and it certainly depends on your situation. First of all, it can take almost 8-9 months to just enroll in the public health service...oh bureaucracy! Once you are in the system, don't expect to be able to see a doctor right away... it can take months before you see a doctor, depending on the situation. Depending on your work situation, if you work for a private company, you may be able to enroll in private insurance which offers great coverage and can help cover the costs at private clinics like this one. However, as usual, there are stipulations...oftentimes you have to wait six months before private insurance kicks in! So if you unfortunately need care prior to 1) getting in the public health system and 2) your private insurance kicks in, at least you can visit private clinics like Santagostino in the meantime and not pay *too* much (in reality, what you pay is usually around the same as a co-pay in the US...sometimes, a bit more than a co-pay in the US!). Standard visits (like gyno or dermatologist) at this clinic for women cost around 65 euros. Pap tests, colposcopies, or additional exams cost extra. Not too steep, yet still a hassle for most of us who'd rather not pay out of pocket...knowing others are able to take advantage of lower cost options! If you do have to schedule a gyno visit here, try to book a visit with Doctor Sala. She speaks English and has a great bedside manner. Super important traits for an expat seeking medical care in a foreign country! Only four stars because like the US, the assistant and support staff don't take initiative to follow up after they say they will...they'll tell you they'll help you schedule a follow-up appointment or referral to another doc, but then you never get the call and will have to do it yourself (my case exactly).

I am so grateful that Amex got me in the next day. It's a very nice and clean facility. The girls at the front desk spoke perfect english, as did my doctor. They offer various specialist in the medical friend as well as a general doctor. My doctor diagnosed the problem right away and gave me a prescription. If I find that I need another doctor, this will be my first call.

After calling or emailing at least 10 other dentists, most of whom had…read moreclosed down for Ferragosto (August vacation), the receptionist at Milan Med Center picked up and actually spoke a little English. Not only were they able to get me in to help correct an issue caused by a root canal prior to leaving the US, they had me scheduled for an appointment immediately. A short time later Dott. Montefusco had done an exam, taken an X-Ray and spent 15 minutes explaining the mostly good news to me. He was very thorough, very sincere and in no rush to get me out the door, unlike most Dentists in the US (Dr. Choe in Pasadena is an exception). The visit was 150 Euro, which wasn't cheap. But considering I spent over $900 on the procedure that caused this problem, 150 Euro is a bargain.
