We are still dreaming about that curry flavor of the fried rice and heat on the pad Thai! First we realized the restaurant closes at 9PM on most days... and thought that was early until a quick Yelp search shows that most places don't even open past 6PM in Hokitika. Given the lack of options, I'm not surprised that this is a default eatery for most. We had to pick whitebait because that seems to be what all the other reviews point toward. It wasn't disappointing. Having the tiny eyes from the white fish staring at you isn't exactly appetizing. Ultimately, it just wasn't flavorful. The lemon helps. The capers help. It's a white pizza. We kind of wish we got a red sauce pizza instead. I would've given it a 3 star but who wants to go to a 3 star restaurant? What am I saying, you don't have a choice. Nothing else is open. Just come and enjoy it and don't think too hard about it!

I was traveling around the entire south island with some friends and Hokitika was our first stop. When you come to Hokitika this place is on everyone's go to list. They are famous for a white bait pizza but it wasn't available the night we went. We ordered a half/half Mariner(seafood) and T-Rex(meat lovers with bbq sauce) and as well a veggie pizza. They put meat on our veggie pizza so we had to send it back and have it remade. Some of you might think seafood pizza sounds weird but it's actually really good! Mariner is a must try if you go! Prices are for sure high but it does match the quality of the pizza. Medium $22 Large $28 Half/Half $32 This was my first time trying Fat Pipi and I did enjoy it. I'm just not sure I would make a trip back if I ever went back to NZ. One Fat Pipi is enough for me! There's a really nice sunset spot in Hokitika right behind this restaurant so you can stop there first and eat pizza after. Or eat it with the sunset. But I was there in the winter and it was a bit too cold for that. 4 stars. Staff is a little edgy, the pizza was good not great. Try if you're around but don't go out of your way for it.

A quaint little spot, I chose a table near the dining area's wood stove, which was keeping the space at a comfortable level on a breezy spring day. The lovely little hostess I encountered upon arrival also functioned as server for the day, so I allowed her a bit of grace about being quick to attend to my needs. The kitchen needed no grace whatsoever, as they turned out a delightful and filling plate of roast lamb and potato chunks, smothered in a rich brown gravy. A bit of melty cheese and a dollop of sour cream topped the plate. Comfort food at its finest -- though it would have been nice to see it accompanied by a brown bread and perhaps some asparagus or carrot. I selected the large option, which filled a dinner plate on its own, so while the bread or veg would have made for great accompaniment I can't say for sure that i could've eaten any more food! Driving led me not to sample any of the alcoholic options the Kingfisher offered, though the bar menu was substantial in its offerings (especially for a rural spot) and I was indeed tempted.

But spending a night in Hokitika and finding a local favorite led me to this place. We came on Christmas Eve about an hour before closing and we just made it in time to get the sandwiches we wanted because shortly after they were sold out of most items. I usually go with what catches my eye first because it's directly connected to my stomach. So the coaster sandwich it was. Fried eggs (runny yolk), prosciutto, aged cheddar, west coast butter, aioli, black pepper, greens. Just as as I was typing that my stomach and eyes were both crying because I couldn't have one and grumbling because it was hungry. We took that sandwich towards the beach and sat in front of the driftwood signs and it was a great place to have our lunch. By far, this was one of those biggest surprises that I had in New Zealand because I never expected to enjoy a sandwich as much as I did, but everything that they had here with the fresh local ingredients and fantastic meats and cheeses, created a fanboy for these sandwiches.

We went here for an after work meal and everyone seemed pretty pleased. I had the Fish of the Day special which was delicious. The ratatouille and the risotto on the side didn't exactly bowl me over but it was all tasty enough. The service was slow enough but I can't imagine they have a group as big as our's regularly. Far from the best Italian food I've had but it's decent enough and offers all of the favourites on the menu. I'll return to try some of those to see if it improves my rating. Worth a shot for a night out in Greymouth anyway.

Outdoor seating boasts great views of the lake and hills. Service was relatively quick - even when we ate as a group of 7+. The food was incredibly tasty and there were lots of gluten free & vegetarian meals. The duck was perfectly cooked and crispy, and the portion was quite large. Overall would go next time I am in town.
