Little did any of us know that the bricks would come tumbling down on the front of my house. The project became an emergency on a Saturday and Buddy & Robert were at our home on Sunday to assure us that everything will be taken care of and that the project would be done in three days. Monday was the clean up of the debris and on Wednesday the project began and on Friday the project was completed I would definitely recommend there services to Family and Friends. We had just sold our home to an FHA buyer and were beginning to go through the contingency period…read more I was expecting that our roof would get flagged by either the home inspector or the FHA appraiser, as it was 9 years old and we had never done anything to maintain it. There were no leaks, or anything visibly wrong that we could see, but I started to reach out to roofers anyway to see if they could just come out to look at my roof and let me know what, if anything, needed to be done. I got an email from Derrick the same day I submitted a request for an estimate through the website. He said he'd be glad to come out and have a look and let me know what needed to be done. He ended up not being able to come out for over a week, because it rained pretty much every single day. But in the meantime, during that week, I got estimates back from two other roofers, and the home inspection was completed. The two other roofers both gave me quotes for full roof replacement, full skylight replacement, and all kinds of stuff I wasn't expecting to need, totaling over $2500. But when Derrick got back to me with his estimate, it was almost $2000 cheaper - and I had to do a double take! I thought for sure he'd left off a 1 at the beginning or something. I had been bracing myself to shell out thousands of dollars for a new roof. But then I read his estimate, and compared it to the home inspector's report that I'd just gotten back, and guess what? The items that the home inspector said we needed to address were the EXACT SAME ITEMS that Derrick said we needed to address (aka NOT a new roof - just some maintenance to extend the life). I can't even begin to tell you the amount of relief I felt! I even exchanged emails with Derrick to make sure - to really make sure - that this was correct. I sent him the inspector's report, and he confirmed that his estimate would address everything the inspector was asking us to address. I even sent him another one of the roofer's estimates, which had pointed out something about delaminated plywood sheathing, and asked if he'd noticed anything else like that up there. He said he didn't but he'd be happy to have another look. He came back the next day and completed the job! Completed - the job - the next day! Another thing I should mention is that he included pictures of my roof in his email to me with the estimate attached, and no other roofer I contacted did this. He sent me 'after' pictures when the work was completed and I was able to clearly see what work was performed and that it was indeed complete. I can't say enough good things about this company - it was such a pleasure to work with someone like Derrick at a time when, as sellers, we are most vulnerable to being taken advantage of to simply get through the contingency period. It was refreshing to know that we were dealing with an honest tradesman, which seems to be a rarity these days. I was so impressed with his honesty and work that I shared his name and number with my realtor. She said whenever she sells a house in Philly, she has a hard time recommending a roofer because she's had so many bad experiences. I hope this ends up bringing Derrick more business. I contacted three companies to give me estimates on paining half of the rooms in my house and the…read moreshed out back. All three companies gave cost estimates very close to the same amount. My 65 year old row home had wall paper to remove, cracks to fill and newly installed quarter round to caulk and seal. Not an easy job because of all the prep work to be done. The guys who walked through my house from AKF exuded confidence at every turn, making me believe they were experienced dealing with the challenges they would face, so I hired them. They asked for a 50% deposit which gave me some concern. I should have negotiated that down to a lower amount. They said they could finish in 4 days. Day one was all about wall paper removal. They finished that very quickly, then the guys left after being there only a few hours. On day 2, I expected a lot of surface prep with a steam machine to melt away glue residue and a longer presence, a full day of work. I was minding my own business and didn't see what they were doing until they had left for the day, again they were only there about a half day. I went through the house and found a lot of walls had been painted without any effort to remove glue. They had left for the day left before I saw the results of their work. For no good reason at all, baseboards and the new quarter round I just had installed, had been removed from the main floor all around. There was paint on unprepared walls and a lot of cracks had been painted over with no spackle, so they showed through the paint. I messaged the owner of the business and sent a lot of pictures and expressed my concern as I had made a 50% deposit. To their credit, they sent a different crew and the owner came to the site herself. They started removing glue with the right equipment and made a point of showing me the results periodically. They went through the house and were doing surface prep at some areas that were missed previously. It's really hard to fix something that was not done correctly from the start but they were determined and pressed forward. The work went on for over a week. The end result was something that looks decent from a distance but if you inspect closely there are still a lot of flaws. Un-sanded spackled areas mostly on ceilings, old cracking paint that was not scraped or smoothed, just painted over, and cut in areas at wall to ceiling corners where coverage was not good if you look closely under bright lighting. They hired my handy man to fix the baseboards because apparently they know how to remove it, but were not equipped or prepared to reinstall it. There were several broken pieces needed replacing and I already had some spare. That baseboard work wasn't finished when they declared the project complete. I walked through the house again taking pictures of flaws. They returned again and worked to improve things, and they did make it look better, covering most of the flaws from my photographs. The owner really cares about their reputation and tried very hard to make sure I was satisfied. They also gave me a discount because there were so many problems but that was a small consolation. The project took way longer than advertised and got off to a very rocky and unprofessional start. I expected better overall performance for the money paid. I would hire them again if it was for a rental property and no difficult surface prep to do, but this project was to prepare my home to be sold. If my untrained eye can see flaws, then any perspective buyer will also see those things. I hoped for better. Although I accepted the job as completed, the end results were just OK.
