Most of the time the no one came up to me and said hello or even cared if I ever came back. The Rabbi's never introduced themselves to me. Beth-El is very different! When I first walked in I was taken with the sun shining in from the beautiful stain glass. The women sit on one side and the men sit on the other. When the Torah came around the Rabbi greeted everyone in both the men and women's section! Women aren't ignored in this shul. He welcomed me and invited me to stay for kiddish. The other members of the shul also said hello and wanted to get to know me. Even though people have been going there for years they aren't cliquish at all. There is a book club, movie club and weekly lessons that are always worth coming to. We have a regular group of people who always have interesting opinions. If you're looking to doven at a shul which has a family feel this is the place. There are young people, older people, a mix of black hats and more modern orthodox. Everyone is respectful of each other. There is a full kiddish meal downstairs and people usually stay and talk for a long time afterward. It didn't take long for me to feel at home here, a matter of weeks actually. Within a year I was asked to join the board.

There were a few in Manhattan. We went to them all. This was the right fit for us. The most important part of a synagogue is the Rabbi. Someone who cares about what is going on with you and the community. Someone is caring, and genuinely loves what he does. That is Rabbi Sebert to a T. That was the clincher. My daughter and wife go to Challah Tots on Fridays (which is cute). We will be participating more. If you are looking for a good conservative synagogue with a rabbi who cares. This is the place.

The congregation was welcoming and nice and I enjoyed it when I was there for the summer. I found the garden incredibly relaxing . . . the sounds of the city completely disappear and leaves visitors with the calming sound of the waterfall.

I arrived way too early, because I wasn't sure how long it would take on the F train--some stops were under construction, and I didn't know how far I'd have to walk down Carroll St. to get to the church. Finally, I arrived to the front of the building and it was absolutely gorgeous. I stood in awe for a moment as I was let in from the freezing cold. Upon entrance, I dipped my hands in Holy Water and made the Sign of the Cross before I found a nice, inconspicuous pew for myself. My eyes met genuine smiles as I looked around nervously. The choir had a practice session before the service, which I was able to listen in on and it was very refreshing. A great pipe organ in the back commanded my attention as it reached towards the sky. A choir stood next to it, ready to captivate our ears and our souls. The building is very historic looking and it was so grand, but still modest at the same time. I enjoyed everything about mass--the incense, the prayers, the silence, the bells, the voices upon voices, singing in Latin, the shrilling volume of the organ and the softness of it, and the sermon. I could tell the church body is very close and it still warms my heart to think about it. Everyone here was so welcoming and I suppose they could sense that I was a visitor. After the service, the priest invited me to have snacks with everyone; cakes shaped like lambs, pastries, coffee and tea, cookies, crackers, cheese, fruits, blueberry crumbles, napkins, cups, hugs, smiles, handshakes--they were all presented to me and I felt like family, as if I had been coming here since I was a little girl. They all liked my dress. I love this place!
