Admittedly, this is a fact I can't be sure of. I haven't been everywhere else in the world, y'see. I CAN, however, tell you that I DID try a veritable array of rum, and all of it was fine. Bear in mind, I've always been a vodka man. All other spirits are second-rate to me. (Except the green fairy, but I don't really consider THAT a spirit. It's more a monster unto itself.) But this is some good rum. The decor is great, and not at all cheap or tacky (as you'd expect from a members club), and the music complements the decorating perfectly. Though I'm not typically a fan of rum, if you've friends who love the stuff, bring them here (or be dragged along), and you'll have a gay old time. If you can claim a lounge for your own, many a deep, philosophical and ultimately meaningless conversation will be had before the night is done.

Rum is the thing at Bar Cuba (Surprise!) and though I'm not a huge fan of rum usually, they make delicious cocktails and as the saying goes, when in Cuba... The music is a mix of soul funk and jazz and the people lounging around may appear casual but their dress certainly is not. This place is booked for functions a fair way ahead so if you want to have a party here you've got to be organised. And here's a hot tip: having your gig here is not a cheap venture. If you don't have the cash you can always do as we've done in the past and gate crash more wealthy people's parties. You didn't read this but... we may have snuck in on occasion. Or better yet, subtly convince your friends to have functions here so you can attend. Yeah... do that.

Having sat through that one night, we avoid the place if we know the mic is open. There is, however, never a bad night for the food, as there are constant $9.90 schnitzel specials. Unlike The Lion up the road, Lord Melbourne doesn't charge $3 for gravy or sauce, and includes salad for free. The only catch is that you have to buy a drink. Oh, well, okay then. They have Bulmer's Pear on tap, so that'll do for me. You can also just buy a soft drink if you really want to keep it cheap. So that's a schnitty and a coke for $13? Not half bad. Not considering that the schnitties are a decent size with thick veal and very yummy chips. Thursday nights are a winner for $12 steaks. Again, you have to buy a drink, but I don't think anyone at a pub complains too loudly about that. Tonight I got a 600 gram rump steak, beautifully cooked to a 'medium', tender, fat and yummy. And with chips and salad. I'm a happy camper at the moment. One little tip for the Lord Melbourne - if you go into where the pokies are they have a complimentary coffee and hot chocolate machine. I use this excessively when we're there later at night, often finding that a mocha is just what I need. Especially if it's free.

I wasn't keen at the promise of "Adult Entertainment" and "Hot Girls" at lunchtime, but I was won over by the promise of a $6. Cheapness conquers all. I expected a lot of lecherous old men, but there were only a few. The rest must have been in the other room with the 'entertainment.' Few women venture into this place. The barmaid is quite gruff, as I imagine she'd have to be. I ordered my $6 fish and chips, and discovered I had to buy a full priced drink, but a coke kept it under $10. My other options were a beef schnitzel with salad and chips and any topping, or nachos, or bangers and mash. I saw a schnitzel come out later and regretted not getting one. The entertainment of the main room of the hotel is a large screen showing the cricket, and a drunk old man, staggering around and talking to everyone. I avoided eye-contact and sent out my strongest ice queen vibes, and he thankfully left me alone. The other woman who came in wasn't so lucky, but he didn't try with her for long, and went back to talking loudly at the cricket. My fish and chips came very quickly. The chips were nice but a little cool, and the fish was quite small, but very yummy. A perfect size for a lunch. On the side came salad with an odd mayonnaise and mustard dressing, which was surprisingly tasty, and two pieces of buttered bread on the side. That made me chuckle, reminding me of my father who always wants bread with his F&C. While I'm not keen on the topless women next door, I could really come to like this place. It's very much a locals venue, and the bar staff know almost everyone who comes in.

However, that aside, the main reason that I visited this pub was not for the back area (which does have a pretty decent beer garden by the way) but rather the front bar, which actually has a really cool, old man's pub feel about it. In fact the old men of this old man's pub are actually really warm and welcoming. Mind you, it isn't one of my favourite pubs, though in the past I have landed up here with friends. Monday night is open mike night, better known as Billy Bob's BBQ jam, an attraction for locals and tourists alike. Although quiet until about 9pm, the bar quickly fills and by 10 is packed with eccentrics, hipsters, aspiring musicians backpackers and international students. It is a quaint looking place, staunchly anti poker machine and one of the strongest supporters of Adelaide's local music scene. The walls are littered with 60's paraphernalia and objets d'art. During the winter time an open fire roars in the front bar, whilst during the summer people congregate outside in the beer garden out the back whilst waiting for the music to start. The cause of attraction is Billy Bob and his BBQ band. Performing perfect renditions of rock epics such as Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" (including the choreographed guitar thrusts) and moody blues numbers Billy Bob and his band set the bar for subsequent performances, and return to the stage intermittently to support other acts. Subsequent performances vary markedly from week to week but are always entertaining. From aged local singer song writers to sprightly young punkers, 10 piece reggae bands to a travelling magician the line up is always full, different and invigorating. During the Chinese New Year I have even seen a full Dragon Dance performance. For those who wish to perform, it is advisable to bring your own instrument (with the exception of drums of course which are provided by the venue), although, on occasion, Billy Bob and his band have allowed use of their guitars to young and underprepared punters. You will need to approach Billy Bob (he's the guy with the cowboy hat) and get your name written down on the list. Everyone is welcome, so if you can play, give it a go. The sound is great and taken care of by an experienced professional, there are also a number of mics for multiple vocalists, horns etc. For those who prefer to relax, the front bar is a less hectic way to take in the vibe and have a chat. With friendly bar staff and a counterculture atmosphere the Grace Emily is a unique and wonderful gem in the city of Adelaide. Aside from the regular Monday night open mike night for which the Grace Emily is so well known, it hosts numerous gigs for local, interstate and international acts during the week and on weekends. And they have the full range of coopers on tap! What more could one ask for in a venue.

While you're there, check out the contraption that allows selected beers to be infused with a range of other interesting ingredients. We got our food quickly (which was good because I was quite hungry) but this also could have been because we were the only ones in the front bar (except for the dog). We went for a pub classic, the Schnitzel, which at $17.90 was one of the cheapest meals on the menu. How was the schnitzel? well... the beer battered chips were amazing!! The schnitzel was quite bland and my partner who had the parmy said that the cheese had no flavour. However, he REALLY likes cheese. I think it would be a great front bar area for a fun, busy night and the function rooms look amazing - decked out with fairy lights and modern decor. And hour and a 45 minutes later! This is at 7:45pm. My partner told me after we left, because I was already upset/angry. The steak we asked for medium rare, got it rare and bloody, and that stooge cook calls himself a chef!! What a joke. On top of that, My drink was too sour, the 'manger' I presume, bloke in blue shirt asked if it was good, I replied 'not bad' then he pressed again to see if I would like it 'fixed up' he took it away and I did not see it for another 40 minutes! It was not indeed fixed up, they just put a lime in it! at the end we asked for a discount, as our food has not up to par, nor what we even ordered/asked for in the first place, we got offered a complimentary dessert, not even a discount for getting the $55 steak completely wrong! There is no disability friendly access for Red Ochre grill however if you request for one, there is access on the ground floor for the River Cafe.
