I found this place from a review saying it had a separate gluten free menu which it did not but the menu did state what was gluten free, unfortunately they do not offer pizza or pasta gluten free. So this was not the best choice for my wife to eat, the salad was good but when you're traveling and haven't eaten all day it would have been nice to have a little something more. What we did get was good but service was very slow at the bar, you're tucked in and easily forgotten.

    Our pizza. It was good.

We got pizza and wings. Both were good. Service was nice the atmosphere was nice. Only a couple wing flavors but the ones we got were very flavorful. I liked the pizza sauce. I would go back. They have bar seating and some that overlook the pizza oven.

First time patron, the aroma of burning wood had me when I walked in, great atmosphere, staff is friendly without helicoptering. Good beer selection, pizza was excellent, I had pepperoni /fatback, great flavor, I picked up a taste of garlic that was a little heavy for my taste I think I was probably sprinkled on crust, all in all I would return

"I think that hurdle over the snow mound was Olympic worthy," I comment about snow-covered Pittsburgh, hurling myself from the curb into the warm restaurant. The negative degrees combined with aggressive snow coverage make it hard to leave the house. Not wanting to venture too far, before the show at the Benedum we stopped in across the street at Proper for a drink. We enjoyed it so much, we came after the show too. Bartenders were very friendly and helpful with recommendations. Great tap list from all across the region. Good food options. Cozy but not cramped. I'd be happy to come back.

Came here twice over a 4 day stay, that's how much I LOVED this place. We ordered the Pesto Pizza and the calamari and hands down, the pizza was the winner. The pesto pizza was topped with caramelized onions, bacon crumbles, cherry tomatoes, pork belly parmigiano, mozzarella, drizzled pesto and a garlic oil brushed crust. This combination right here was insane. Every bite was flavorful, whether it came from the onions, pork belly or the bacon. At the end, the crust had a hint of garlic and we asked for a side of pesto to dip the crust in and it was amazing! Calamari was also really good. The batter was light which helped the calamari flavor stand out, the marinara was not too tangy and perfect tomato sauce. Overall, great food and great vibes.

This place continued to come up my Yelp searches so I had to check it out. This place lived up to the recommendations. And yes the price was a little high but the quality of the food and service more than justified it. My app, pizza, and a beer came to about $56 which is reasonable for this place. The ambiance was nice. Intimate in a sense bc it's dark but really a good place to come w a group of friends or family and hang out. Their craft beer selection was good. Not pictured but I had a Red IPA, the name of w which I can't pronounce nor spell but it was something like Nastro.... Something. My server recommended the mushrooms over the pork belly and as you can see I went w that and they were good. The Luca was very good and no I didn't finish it all. Had a 1/2 slice left. I recommend this place and will come again when I'm in Pitt.

FOOD Pesto Pizza - Literally so delicious! The pizza has that burned brick oven taste that makes it taste so delicious. The pesto drizzle on top added flavor and didn't make the pizza too salty. Pork was so tasty and cooked/seasoned well. Tomatoes were still cooked to the perfect degree where it was still juicy! Funghi Pasta - the pasta tasted great! Very creamy and a good amount of sauce. The mushrooms were not too mushy. Also I liked the bits of cheese that added to the delicious flavors! VIBES The place has dimmer lighting and is perfect for date nights. There is lots of seating including booths and tables. Pretty crowded during the evenings! SERVICE Everything came out pretty fast and pleased with the quality of the food! Really cool that they have so many options for beer on tap!

9/25/2025 Ate List: Calabrian Pizza - 8.8 Wow. Surprised it's taken so long for me to go here. Very cool spot and layout. A little too pricey to be a place I visit more frequently. But I'm definitely impressed on a first impression. Excited to try more!

This place hit the spot on every level. We needed some carbs yet healthy and the aroma of the brick oven made me want pizza soooo bad!!! So we were lucky enough to sit at the bar after a pirates game. It was $5 off pizzas and $5 drafts. Since I over did it the night before I opted for an ice cold Pepsi. My friend and I decided to split the proper house salad and a Bianca pizza. But of course I asked for a side of ranch bc what's pizza with out the ranch to dip it in? Both were spot on!! Perfectly dressed for the salad and perfected cooked for the pizza with garlic garlic and more garlic oozing from the cheese. Perfection! The bartender was fantastic! He enjoyed our stories of the adventures through town from the night before and was quite entertaining. All in all this place was fantastic. If you want a great brick oven pizza - this is your spot!!!

I'm astonished that I have never reviewed Proper on Yelp. It might be my favorite pizza in the city, and I eat a whole lot of pizza. There are several specialty, wood-fired pizzas on the menu and you can pretty comfortably split one between two people, especially if you're getting any appetizers or salads. They are famous for their bacon candy; I'm a vegetarian and can recommend the fried brussels sprouts. But I usually bypass an appetizer and go for a Proper house salad, which is unique with its combination of Bibb lettuce, red pears, candied walnuts, goat cheese and white balsamic. You can get a whole to split or a half if you're dining solo. Then order a pizza, which is going to run you anywhere between $21 and $25. It's pricey but they are really good, and the absolute best in my opinion is the Bianca which may be better than any white pizza in Pittsburgh. It's the perfect balance of flavors and garlicky goodness and brings some heat with ample red pepper flakes on top. There is a full bar, and in the likely event that the relatively small dining area is packed (no reservations accepted), you can try for a seat here. They will serve the full menu with fast service and I always order whatever seasonal sangria is being offered at the time. I like that they are always rotating and feel fresh to the time of year. This restaurant also has good awareness that they are next door to the Benedum Center and will do their best to get you to your show, if applicable, on time.

I found this place while walking around in search of dinner. After a quick peak at the yelp reviews I decided to give it a try. And I'm glad I did!! The tap list is amazing. To see Trillium on tap is certainly a surprise! I went with a more local IPA and it hit the spot after driving for over 4 hours. I tend to be picky about pizza - I LOVE really good pizza. And this was really good pizza! I ordered the forest which has mushrooms, a garlic sauce, cheese and balsamic reduction. It was cooked perfect in their wood oven and the flavors were delicious. I'm already thinking about the leftovers. If you love really good beer and really good pizza this is the place for you!

Stopped in on light up night before seeing Steve Martin and Martin Short. Place was jam packed, but we were able with a short wait to find bar seats. They surprisingly had a decent draft list. We weren't all that hungry so we split a salad and ordered a pepperoni roll. The salad was decent, it has candied walnuts, apple slices and goat cheese. The pepperoni roll was a decent size and tasty. The bar service was good. The place isn't all that big inside. One downside could be that if downtown is busy and you hope to find a seat without reservations, people seem to linger at the bar area and never leave. We lucked out when we got our seats. We also tried to be courteous and open our seats up for others.

Food: 4.5/5 Service: 4.5/5 General vibes: 4/5 I came on the recommendation of my manager - who had stopped by when he was in Pittsburgh and said this was the "best pizza" he's EVER had! Given the high praise, a friend and I came in for dinner. It took a short while to get seated because the servers were busy and it was a packed night, but we took it as a sign that it'd be delicious! We both opted for pizza ($20-$25/ea). I went for the sausage & pepperoni. Flavor wise it was great! It had sufficient toppings, and the crust was not overly dry. But the center was a bit on the wetter side (not sure if the cheese, or if just needed a minute or two more in the oven). We quite enjoyed our meal but the party next to us kept staring at us, which made us a little uncomfortable. Hence: 4/5 on the vibes. The tables are quite close to one another so if you don't want to hear others talking or watch others eating, this might not be the place for you!

Ask the Community - Proper Brick Oven & Tap Room

Private dining available appropriate for a dinner time business meeting?

We sat at a nice round table in the front corner opposite the pizza oven. It was warm, cozy and felt pretty private. I would think the back bar might be noisy and busy after work but they were back quiet corners

    Any options for vegan cheese?

No vegan cheese. The pizza dough and sauce is vegan friendly though.

Is there gluten free crust available?

No, there is no gluten free crust available. Gluten free items are marked GF on the menu.

Can I bring my 9-year-old niece here for pizza before a show at the Benedum? Is it suitable?

While not impermissible, probably not the best place for a 9 y/o. Definitely more of an adult vibe. Food was great though.

Is there a long wait to be seated on a Saturday evening?

We went on a Saturday a few weeks ago, and I think it is hit or miss. We arrived around 5:30 on a night where it was nice enough for them to utilize their outside seating, and we got there behind one other couple. There were a few average sized…

    Do they take dinner reservations?

Yes, if you have a group of 6 to 16 people. I have made a reservation before, but it only works for a group.

Anyone have a good feel for wait times on a Sunday around 4? I tried to make a reservation but they said there were none available.

You should not have a problem being seated around 4 pm especially on a Sunday unless there is an event going on downtown (Steelers, Pirates, Pens, or theater shows) We have never had an issue, however it is a small place and can get busy during peak…

The gnocchi was one of the best I've ever had. The texture was incredible. I also got the short rib pasta, which was just okay. The meat was very tender, but the overall flavors didn't really stand out to me. The portions are definitely huge, though! We also got the Caesar salad, and the dressing was really good, but the shishito peppers were almost soggy, which took away from the dish a bit. Really good spot for a date!

It is a very cozy Italian restaurant that's serving homemade Italian food like your Nonna would make for you. We showed up on a Tuesday night and it was packed. It was around six or 6:30 in the evening and when we first got there, we were told it would be about a 20 minute wait before a two top was available. But the host came back and asked if we didn't mind sitting by the kitchen they could see us right away. We chose to sit by the kitchen, which honestly was probably the best option because it was actually a little bit quieter because there was a very large party that was celebrating a birthday and they had live music going on so it was hard to hear when you were in the main dining space but back by the kitchen it's a little bit quieter and we could actually hear ourselves talk. My husband got the penne with meatballs and the penny was nicely cooked with a beautiful tomato Bass sauce and the meatballs or some of the best Italian meatball he's ever had. His only complaint was that there were only two in the order and he wished there would've been three. I got the spinach and ricotta, stuffed ravioli, and by far one of the best raviolis I've ever had. The ravioli are large so there's only about five in a dish but they're packed fully and the flavoring and seasoning is absolutely spectacular. It's got a beautiful sauce like accompanies it and the chew you can definitely tell it is handmade pasta/ravioli. Our server, Emma was absolutely spectacular and was so kind. We truly enjoyed our experience here and would highly recommend anybody to check it out if you're in the area. But we also do recommend make your reservations ahead of time. Very soft, and served with quite high quality olive oil. The bottle has both olive oil and balsamic! The soup of the day was quite good as well. It was some sort of beef broth, I think may a beef and bean soup. Chickpeas in there as well. Next time, I might try the salad. The salad they have as a side is so good, an amazing portion and seems so fresh and tasty. The mains were excellent. Very good pasta with clam sauce. Lots of clam meat and a flavorful oil based sauce. My friend had some red penne with chicken and enjoyed that as well. Great portions, pretty fair prices. Finally, great drinks as well. Very memorable cherry cola that I believe the company is owned by the owner's son. Real cane sugar, very good. The cappuccino was great as well. Definitely come here!

This dish has enormous potential, but it just wasn't delivered. This dish was palatable only by having the tomatoes on the vine as a side. My lovely counterpart on the Tomatoes on the Vine side: "I didn't love it, but it was necessary." She generally loves this sort of preparation but again, it just wasn't there. Cheesecake was great. Our server was excellent and attentive. Amanda, the assistant manager, was too busy to chat with us even though the house was mostly empty. Our table had two bottles of wine, ordered by the glass instead of by the bottle. The wine pours are staged outside of the bar, so the bartender wasn't involved. We are still at a loss to understand why Amanda was not willing to consider giving us even one of the bottles' worth at the bottle price and why she shut down our waitress when she asked. It seems like a weird hill to plant your flag on, and entirely inconsistent with our more than 30 years experience with Big Burrito. This is the first time we have experienced anything like this in a Big Burrito restaurant; truly bizarre and our poor server was clearly uncomfortable relaying the decision. We hadn't made any observations about the food to her and were having a great time even with kitchen's inconsistency. We might try again at some point: some of the dishes were great and there is clearly potential.

Big Jim's is a Pittsburgh institution. It's been 20 years or so since my last visit to Big Jim's…read more My family was headed towards town around dinner time and decided to take advantage of the opportunity and stop by. We arrived around 4:30 on a Friday. We were able to get a parking spot around the back. We were quickly seated and beat the dinner rush by a few minutes. First off, our waitress couldn't have been sweeter. Super friendly and attentive. Very kind, especially to my youngest son. My wife had a small fish sandwich, my oldest son had the baked ziti, my youngest son had chicken parm, and I had gnocchi with meat sauce. Portions were large and tasty. Three of us had cups of wedding soup. Everyone was stuffed and enjoyed their meal. I would highly recommend and will not have a 20 year gap in visits to Big Jim's (in the run).

A friend told us how good Big Jim's was and we are so glad we decided to go try it…read more We were warmly greeted when we entered. The waitress was also very nice and accommodating the entire time. A man was also very helpful and brought us things we may need. I really enjoyed the super meaty and delicious meatballs on my meatball hoagie. The Marinara was really good. My husband's Italian and absolutely loved the veal cutlet sandwich. It was huge, crunchy and tasty. It made him nostalgic for the veal cutlets his grandmother used to make. The Fresh-cut Fries were good but weren't seasoned well enough. I also wish they were crunchier. We saw a man order the Stromboli and it was ginormous but looked delicious. He was a big guy and only ate about 25% of it. Got my mom a corned beef sandwich and she said it one of the best she had ever had. We're Irish and she loves them. There are lots of great things on the menu and will be back to try other things.
