It really feels and looks like a pub you'd imagine. Nice, dark atmosphere. Carpets, fireplace, dark wood furniture. Really charming and feels warm and welcome. And we did feel welcome. Staff was great, friendly and helpful. Our Bulldog was welcome as well! Ordered Cod Bites and Salt & Pepper Squid. A Burger with fries as well. And a coke...I was driving. Took a while until the order arrived (staff told us when we ordered it'll take a while). But the wait was worth it. It's really nice, homemade, freshmade food. Cod and Squid still both hot and crispy. The Burger had a nice grilled flavour to it. A good quality meat patty. It's a nice place to grab a bite, very good value (cod and squid only at 5£ each). Friendly folks, nice atmosphere. Good food.

There's a good mix of locals and passing trade here and all are made to feel as welcome as each other. They have some fantastic ales on tap like Kings Old Ale and many guest beers make an appearance. The food menu is really big which some times can mean its not fresh produce but as far as I can tell, that's not the case here. I had the lasagne and it was really well cooked and served with some really nice garlic bread. They have a beautiful snooker table here (how many pubs have that!?) so if you are lucky enough to get a game, you can try and beat the record break of 80 which has stood there since 1922!

The river Arun has been diverted to enclose the estate in a picturesque moat that has a lot of fish in it. Sadly, you can't boat on it for safety reasons, but it still creates a great initial impression when you arrive and have to cross the moat to the gatehouse. You can explore the gatehouse, but sadly there are no exhibits in here anymore. The main priory is an interesting building and throughout there are a number of volunteers who act as free guides to talk you through the history of the building. I would recommend getting them to show you the mechanics of the kitchen fires, secret passage and inform you of the general history of the priory. They are all very friendly and have a wealth of interesting information at their disposal. Much better than listening to a headset, or reading off an information placard. Aside from the house, there is a working black smithy and rope museum to investigate, a cafe, gift shop and extensive grounds to explore. This includes a apothecary garden where they grow a wide range of herbs and plants used for medicine in times before the scientific revolution. Further investigation will lead you to a charming walled vegetable garden complete with a trellised vine network. It's best to see this in the summer when all is in full swing. The grounds are laid out in a number of walks and you can enjoy a very nice picnic by following the routes. One of these leads to a 14 century roundhouse project where they have recreated a number of traditional huts. Kids will love this. The estate also hosts a number of events in the summer period including medieval reenactments, plays and concerts. The website will detail these. Also, be aware that the opening times are seasonal and you should ensure that the priory is open before making your trip. One final addition to the day is a trip around the working watermill and you can even volunteer to work there for an afternoon and get a hands on experience of how to mill flour. All in all a very nice day out and this should be a designated trip on any summer itinerary in the area.

As earlier review said, beautiful grounds, real English-garden style, very old, interesting history, but for a first timer from America, you need to be aware of the following, especially the first item. The mgt acknowledged that the place was in a cellphone "blank spot" and were trying to remedy it, but no target date for that. The place had just come under new mgt (Sept 2017) and were appreciative of feedback like the below. None of this would be as bad for someone with a rental car, but I didn't rent a car as I didn't want to deal with the left-side driving my first time there, and was at the mercy of cabs. Anyway, if you LIKE remote and don't mind non-enabled cellphone while you're there, it's a great getaway. The whole area feels like it's back in time a couple hundred years...or more. - no cell phone service in this area, confirmed by worker there, cabbie couldn't ring me up till he got two miles or so back towards town. Place is remote enough from nearest town (East Grinstead) that pizza guys there won't deliver..had to go fetch one myself. - no clocks in room - no wifi network info in the info-book in rooms, you have to look and guess (I found the right one, didn't need a pw, others did), wifi speed was decent, better than Heathrow airport (which was intolerably slow, gave up) - someone maybe or maybe not available at front desk on weekends (no one answered either of the "for assistance" numbers posted at 1pm Sat) when I got there, key & sign-in sheet was laid out on counter - no way for outsiders to call a room directly, has to go through front desk and be manually transferred, so if there's no one at desk they you can't get a call in, and with no cell phone service...you get it - fire bell in room went off 10pm from cigarette/smoke detector in great hall / party next door, maybe that's good - no ice machines, or none that I was told about - restaurant is only open for scheduled things, like Sunday breakfast / brunch event - no bathtubs, corner showers only - clean, but rooms small, doors tight/close together (this was an old manor house, typical European sort of style) - beds are sort of low-height/low-budget type, not like the big/tall puffy things you get in the corporate hotels, more like a BnB

Formerly the Marquess of Exeter, it was transformed about two and half years ago to one of Brighton's first non-smoking gastro pubs, aiming firmly for the fine dining and family market. The smoking ban has since caught up, of course, but the food and philosophy are still there. Occupying a corner site, the interior has stripped-wood floors, non-matching wooden furniture, but it's not scruffy: the walls and high ceilings are immaculately painted in maroon and cream, and the overall feel is one of light (huge windows on two sides) and spaciousness. The triangular bar has seating on two sides, with the right-hand side offering views into the kitchen. They serve real-ale (Harveys Sussex Bitter) and have an extensive wine list, but the food takes centre stage, as the open kitchen testifies. It's a gastro-pub menu that would shame many in London, with a commitment to organic and local produce where possible. Despite some impressive reviews, we've not eaten here yet: partly because we already have some favourite eateries, and partly because the gastro food comes with gastro prices: only the veggies get away with mains much below £10, and a three course meal with wine is going to cost upwards of £30 a head. We still can't bring ourselves to pay this much in a pub (especially when you can eat for substantially less in some fabulous Thai and Indian restaurants nearby), although others clearly do, and seem to enjoy it. But that said, even if you are not eating, it's still an agreeable place for a beer of an evening, with calm and relaxing music, a relatively unpretentious crowd, nice surroundings and pleasant staff.

With our pre-dinner drinks, we ordered the largest olives I have ever seen in my life (mixed in with some regular sized ones!!!). They were amazing! I had the Tomato Soup to start with basil oil and ciabatta bread (see image). My man had the beef shin risotto which was also quite nice. For my main, I had the sirloin steak and he had the Harveys Beer Battered Halloumi Cheese dish. This wouldn't be a normal choice for him but after tasting the local Harvey's beer, he thought he'd give it a try...and he loved it. My steak was good overall, however, I found it to have a bit more fat than I'm used to. I couldn't eat about 20% of it which was a shame. I can forgive it though as the meat I did get to was lovely. We did not have dessert but rather a lovely cup of coffee. The server asked me how we heard about it and I gave credit to all of you fabulous reviewers at YELP!!!!!

As the restaurant area is quite small and intimate, it is worth booking a table.

You are greeted as soon as you walk in with a very warm smile and you are taken over to the waiting area. Be careful if you are tall though as the ceiling is quite low due to it being a 16th century building! There is a selective wine menu here but a good one and the entire feel of this restaurant is cosy and the food is very nice.
