Didn't even realise that it was there until friends pointed it out. Semi-pub-ish kinda place, with a decent selection of food (burgers look great! but too bad I don't take beef...), ordered rice balls which were decent. Another friend ordered their fish and chips, which was not what I expected - big portion of fish fingers and a whole load of wedges being passed off as fries. All in, it was good. Dessert was nothing to shout about though - we shared a brownie and were not at all impressed. They also have a beer menu (font and back page of an A4 sheet) which offers beers in pints and half pints. Tips : do select a more strategically located table, where you know the wait staff can see you, otherwise forgot about being served. Food comes fairly quickly so that was nice. Also, I went on a Saturday at about 7.30-8pm and stayed till about 10.30pm. When I went, it was crowded but I was still able to find a table - the crowd seem to start at about 8.30pm or so. 4 stars here just for the beer. If I were rating just on food, I would give it a 3 because the burger was average in my opinion. For beers though, they have a great selection, including plenty of stouts and American IPAs/APAs. We came as a big group of Yelpers, so I'll give the wait staff a little credit for trying to take all of our orders and not getting mine exactly right (I'll also take into account my poor Portuguese). On the bright side, they actually fixed our order and didn't charge us, so I can't mark them down for that. There is one big projector screen in the back that would be nice to watch sporting events, but I don't think it would be sufficient for everyone in the restaurant to just watch from that screen. Wasn't that impressed with this place. It was true to its namesake, hard to find, hidden. The space was big and is good for big parties. The service seemed responsive but the waiter messed up on our order and got really visibly upset when he realized it was wrong. He spent the next 10 minutes complaining to his colleagues in the kitchen. It was unprofessional. The food was mediocre. If you like your burgers medium rare, this is the place for you. The meat quality was average and the toppings less impressive. The cheese burger lacked something and the taste was bland. IPA fries tasted good but nothing surprising. The artesian ketchup wasn't good and the BBQ sauce was overly sweet. The beer selection however was their saving grace. It was very impressive. They had a lot of different beer on tap so it's definitely worth the trip for a good beer, that is if you don't mind paying for it. Imported or local craft beer in Rio has been overwhelmingly expensive and this place is no different. You can easily pay R$150 for a burger, onion rings and two small (300mL) craft beers. If you are a fan of San Diego beer and have been craving some green flash, crave no more. They have at least 5 different types on tap. So, come for the beer, eat before hand. read more

Being an American expat here in Rio, there are some restaurants that I have found to be essential for satisfying my yearning for my homeland. Bar Escondido is a great place to come for some good-old-U-S-of-A food. The burgers here are really big, and they come in a variety of styles. You can get them with a side salad or fries (including the option of sweet potato fries!), and it all comes in at between R$35 and R$40. Certainly not cheap, but not too expensive for a well-made burger. The other draw here is their beer list. They have tons of imports and microbrews from the U.S., so if you are craving some Brooklyn Lager, you'll find it here! Minus two stars because 1) the price seems to be a little steeper than it should be, and 2) the service is really quite bad. I've been here three or four times, and, every time, all the servers just were standing around the bar. Whenever I tried to order something, I felt like they resented taking my order/getting my food (which is quite rare here in Rio-normally I have found the service industry staff in this city to be super friendly). read more

Nice idea but for me it does not quite make it. If I want specialist beer I'd rather go to delirium, the bar or an Irish pub. Food menu was a bit limited with a focus on burgers. We ordered the power potato it was ok. The house beer was not that good which was a shame as i was hoping for some affordable local beers. Atmosphere was a bit empty for me bit the service was good. This place is legit. If you like good bar food, great burgers and an excellent selection of IPA, look no further and head to Pub Escondido, CA. It's getting only 4 stars because the location is not so good (hidden on a dark road) and it gets way too packed. I was turned away once because it was too full, which was a first. But I'll be coming back, recommend you give it at least one try. That's all it takes. read more

Food was incredible ! But the price of a pint of beer is more than a burger here (40-55 real !) This is for ALL the beer other than 1 cheaper option that tastes like bud light. It was a huge damper on the evening and the staff also weren't too friendly. If they would just lower the beer price, I would have stayed longer and spent way more money ! So, it's a great hang-out with a really good rock music playlist just a block from the beach in Copacabana. The menu was very simple- only a handful of burgers to choose from, with a selection of accompanying sauces. I had the bacon cheddar burger and it wasn't all that impressive. The barbecue sauce was too sweet for my taste and the burger a bit salty. It's still a good place to meet up with friends and just relax for a bit, even if the burger didn't taste as good as it looked. read more

A local friend of mine brought me here because I was asking about places the have mover variety of beers, also, they had a big screen with the UFC fights on that night. This place does have a good selection of beers but be warned some of them are truly crazy expensive. The ballast point from San Diego, CA was about 52 H$ for a pint. Yes, you read that correctly. So, I would stay with the Brazilian brewed beers, which there were some good IPAs that I tried while I was there. I can't say anything for the food because I only drank there but other people's burgers did look really tasty! In addition, I was surprised when I saw the CA for California at the end of the name for the pub. I told my friend that it's named after a town north of San Diego in Cali and tthey thought I was crazy until I showed them the CA on the menu. The said the pub is hidden, there isn't a sign out front so it is easy to walk right past it. read more
