This restaurant is by the same owners as the Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant (PUOR Zlin) just a couple blocks away. Budvarka is an attempt at a more elevated menu and atmosphere as compared to the bar/pub model at PUOR. The food is good though always changing which is great for a new restaurant in development. The service is about the same as in PUOR but you're more focused on your food and drink anyway so just tip well if you're so inclined and enjoy your stay. Classics such as fried cheese and schnitzel were good and comforting. Beers are great and give a nice taste of variety as compared to the taps at PUOR. Dining area is absolutely beautiful with light hardwoods and a huge open viewing area of the beer room. Noise level can get a bit high as popularity grows but it's something you'd expect at a place like this. Businesses like this are sprouting up around Zlin to meet the needs and demands of the growing younger population who are learning that there is more out there to try, so I imagine Budvarka will continue to evolve over the coming months/years and I am curious to see the changes every time I fly in.

Ok, I will be honest and admit that this review is a bit biased since I have been coming to this…read moreplace since I was a little kid, therefore I have some sentimental feelings to this spot, but still, here it comes... This place is totally worth the visit! Especially if you are just randomly passing by or visiting for a couple days and want to make your visit more special. If you are active and healthy, make sure to put your tennis shoes on and hike it up (about an hour and a half). If you want to opt out for the easy option - take a chairlift that will bring you almost all the way up. But I can guarantee you that the food (and beer) will not taste as good if you do not work for it by hiking the hill up on your own! They do not offer many dishes, but everyone (even vegetarians) can find something on their menu which mostly consists of traditional Czech meals. I recommend starting with one of their soups - if you like cheese and do not mind if it has a peculiar smell, then you should not omit an opportunity to have "česnekačka s tvarůžkem" (garlic soup with special Czech stinky cheese) or if you like legumes - go for their čočková or fazolová (lentil or bean soups). As for the second, I like their fried cheese and if you are like me and are not the biggest fan of french fries, you can ask for a substitution of those with cooked potatoes or something else. If you like refreshing soft drinks, try traditional Czech soda - Kofola! If you are into beers, they have great beers from Litovel brewery. My favorite beer from them is called "černý citron" which is dark, weaker and very refreshing citrusy tasting beer! Definitely recommend trying this one out, but I have to give you a warning that it is quite difficult to only stick to one! Na zdraví!

There is also an outdoor patio for al fresco dining when the weather permits. The meal was tasty but the starter bread was just okay. There were two types offered: soft rye and breadsticks. The breadsticks were as dry as a bone and I couldn't bring myself to taste one but the rye bread was soft and delicious. I would have preferred butter with the bread but it turned out that the rye bread was quite tasty on its own. The roasted rabbit with red and white cabbage was delicious and I would order this again. It was #42 on the menu and should have come with a "variety of dumplins" but since I also ordered a side of boiled potatoes, the server must have thought I wanted the potatoes *instead* of the dumplings. Not true. I wanted both! Anyway, the rabbit was perfectly roasted and seasoned. The cabbage was unlike any cabbage I've ever tasted. I actually ordered the side of boiled potatoes expecting some lame cabbage concoction to be staring back at me from my plate. Instead, I saw two thick, gravy-like preparations on my plate: one a rich purpley-red and the other creamy white. They were sweet and favorful and the perfect complement to the roasted rabbit. The svickova was delicious. The bread dumplings were soft and thick and the gravy was scrumptious. Service was just okay and although we spoke English since I hadn't yet downloaded my Google offline Czech translator, both servers did their best to speak to us in English. However, the menu includes 4 translations for every item which is extremely helpful. My one complaint would be my missing "variety of dumplins" and my missing server for nearly the entire meal. I wanted to ask about my dumplings but our server didn't return until we had finished our meals. Overall, I would say that the food was close to 4 stars but the service may have been lacking...possibly due to a language barrier. I'll take the service on the chin since I don't speak Czech and round the entire rating up to 4 stars.
