What's going on with Puptown lately? When I started coming here a couple of years ago, it was full of dogs and really attentive owners. Recently, it's maintained the amount of dogs, but the attentiveness of the owners has seriously decreased. I have left multiple times because I felt that dogs were being aggressive and their owners were either not paying attention, or were not picking up on the signs of their dogs' aggression. I have a fairly large dog (56 lbs), so I'm not just freaking out whenever any dog approaches my tiny pup. My dog is pretty submissive, and not at all aggressive, so it's really unfortunate that we're forced to leave because irresponsible owners let their dogs bully her. This is, obviously, not all owners. Let's get Puptown back on track people! If you're dog STARTS behaving aggressively, pull them away to settle down. It can't be good for you, your dog, the dog that gets hurt, or the hurt dog's owner if something goes down. You can't go to a dog park, sit down, and expect other people to regulate the situation. I'm not getting in the middle of a dog fight between two dogs who, although half my size, could tear me to shreds if they wanted to. That's why EVERYONE needs to pay attention to their dog. read more

Not having a dog, I will go with a friend and his dog, Maxwell to enjoy time to run around and play. It's a fun way to play with dogs without the responsibilities. This neighborhood park is relatively large. The fenced in area has a water fountain, sprinkler, plenty of area for the dogs to enjoy and plenty of seating. There's even area that has lots of shad and soft pebbles for lay on if they need a rest period. Yes, you do see all types of dogs there. The care givers are generally very responsive to their pets whether if the pet needs to be calmed down or need to have something to be picked up. The dogs always enjoy being petted or to have a ball thrown (it doesn't mean, they will retrieve it but they enjoy running after the ball.) The care givers are generally respectful. If you want to be talkative, there are plenty of people to talk to or if you just need some quiet time, that cool too. Cool place to go with Cujo or Fifi, however, if you don't want other dogs hanging around you, please don't "hid" doggie treats in your pocket. Remember, it's a dog park, so remember not to wear your Prada shoes or any other designer clothing since it's a good chance you could get knocked it by a running dog or slobbered on - just saying. read more

I agree - this is hands-down, the best dog park in the city. None of the snootiness of Wiggly Field, and much cleaner and bigger. I second the recommendation to bring water in the winter - we try to bring extra when we remember (occasionally bringing a gallon jug of water for the other dogs, etc), as well as bringing extra plastic bags to leave behind and sometimes tennis balls (although the park seems to be extra well stocked with them lately). In general, a great clientele. You do get the occasional person who has no idea how to deal with their (or other) dogs - my favorite (although it's sad) are the people who yell at their dog for wrestling with another dog...poor things. No wonder your dog is timid and anti-social. Dogs play! It's what they do. Let them play. read more

While my dog Sasha is obsessed with hitting up Montrose Dog Beach, it's not always practical as he always requires a bath afterward. BUT - Puptown Park is a wonderful alternative to the beach! Sure, I wish there was more grass and less concrete but overall, it's a fantastic dog park with a good bit of space. It's generally well maintained, and includes several doggie bag dispensers (though a few are usually empty, so try the next one!). In the warmer months, there's a kiddie pool that the pups frolic in or drink out of as if it's a ginormous bowl of water. So fun to watch them! We've met some nice dogs and owners here, and it usually isn't too crowded (though the weekend afternoons get quite busy!). Don't forget to bring a portable water bowl in the winter months as they shut off the water fountains. read more

I love this dog park! I used to take my pup to Wiggly field, but I was having too many problems with my pup getting hurt or having encounters with aggressive dogs. So I went online and found Puptown, which actually happened to be closer to my apartment. I was a little apprehensive about taking my dog here because it was a new place. I already knew what could happen at Wiggly field and I didn't want to take anymore chances. But I finally mustered up some courage and headed over. The grounds are great. It is spacious, clean, and has plenty of sitting areas for doggy parents! After looking at some reviews on yelp, it appears that there is a volunteer group that keeps the area looking great. They do such a great job and it's nice to know that there is a sense of community intact these days. During the warmer days they have a sprinkler going for those adventurous ones that love playing in the water. There is a water fountain that is doggy height for a refreshing break. And if you forget your poop bags, there are some available inside the park. My dog has not been aggressively approached here. And if it seems something might happen, all the owners who come are ready to act. Everyone is friendly and pays close attention to what their pups are doing. A lot of the frequent visitors also seem to know everyone that swings by! My little girl did get a scratch on her face while rough housing but she didn't even notice, kept going back for more, and was having a blast! She always comes home happy and tired... which is exactly what a grad student needs when studying all day! I definitely recommend giving this park a try. We haven't gone back to the other park since. We love it! UPDATE: this may not be the most appropriate park for small dogs. By small, I mean anything teacup or miniature. A lot of medium and larger dogs come here. If you bring a small dog, you should be aware that sometimes, when larger dogs are getting to know your dog, it's not aggression... I'm sure most people know that. However, not all do. read more

This is the only dog park I have been to with our dogs, as it's just a walk across Marine and down to Lawrence for us. While in the beginning (last summer) it started off as a pretty good experience, we hardly go there anymore these days. Last summer, our timid dogs were getting to meet new friends and work on the socialization and it seemed like there was a pretty good balance between smaller dogs and bigger dogs. But lately, all there is are 60+lb dogs dominating the park. Even at the buttcrack of dawn there's big dogs there already. I wish this place would be a little more considerate to smaller dogs, since not everyone has a lab, a rotweiler, or whatever... I had heard about a section of the park that was to be closed off for dogs under 35lbs, but then heard that it was vetoed against. HMPF! As far as the owners themselves, most of them are pretty attentive about their own dogs and are watchful. But there's the handful of idiots who sit there and read their book or sit there and talk on their phone. read more

This dog park is right around the corner from my new place and I am so grateful. I have a little pit bull mix (please stop reading now if you have a problem with that) and she has a TON of energy. She also plays ROUGH. There's usually at least a couple dogs of similar temperament at Puptown and most of the time she gets a few good hard runs and a wrestling match (or twelve) between drinks from the water fountain and cool-off breaks in the shade (or sprinkler). There are definitely plenty of small and/or and mellow dogs at Puptown too and although my dog generally ignores them, I watch her like a hawk pretty much every second we're there to ensure she doesn't pester any dogs who aren't interested in playing with her. I also always check with the owner(s) of the dogs she does play with to make sure they are comfortable with the level of roughness. So far, only one or two people have expressed concern and I immediately pulled my dog away from theirs. But the majority of the people here are very friendly and understanding. A note to people who bring toys, tennis balls, etc. to the dog park...you are an idiot if you get pissed off when another dog steals it away. You're at a dog park. A note to people who freak out when their dog gets dirty/wet/slobbery...you are an idiot if you expect your dog to stay clean and dry. You're at a dog park. A note to people who don't pick up their dog's poop right away when other dogs are running and sniffing around it...you are just an idiot. read more

I've been to a million dog parks in this city to satisfy the needs of my pup and this has by far been the best! There is a lot of room for dogs to run around as well as seating for dog owners. The layout of the park is extremely interactive. They also have a water fountain and a sprinkler for dogs, which seemed to be a hit. All of the owners I've met were extremely nice and friendly (which I can't say is true for all dog parks I've been to!) The only drawback is that it is right next to LSD so it can get a little overwhelming w/traffic during rush hour. I also wish there was more grass within the park but that is something that didn't seem to bother my pup. ALSO (inserting random rant here) a word to those with little designer yappy dogs. Honestly, whats the point of coming here if you're not willing to let your dog run around with all of the other bigger dogs. Stay home. No one wants to see you roll your eyes and pick up your little toy animal when a bigger dog comes over and wants to play. It's obnoxious and annoying. Puptown is a fair-sized and well-maintained park. It has ample shade, doggy level water fountain, a sprinkler, a leash hook, low concrete walls for sitting, pee pebbles for easy cleaning, and a separate entrance/exit. It's like a newly renovated Xsport, but for dogs! Bad analogy, I admit, but it makes sense to me. The park is very clean, with a lot of room for dogs to sprint and wrestle. Puptown isn't the best place to bring a tea-cup or purse dog, since the big dogs do like to run wild. I understand that owners of smaller dogs aren't always understanding when a bigger dog is getting to know them, so unless you're comfortable with a bigger dog playing with a smaller dog I'd recommend going to Logan Square, or a similar park with a big/small divide. Owners seem generally attentive and thoughtful at Puptown so any potential bullying/roughhousing issues are quelled rather quickly. This is a very nice park - our Wanda's second favorite park in the city behind Wiggly Field. This is definitely one of the better dog parks in the city. read more

Puptown! That word gets my dog racing around the house! Friendly dogs, great owners. I have a shy dog, who loves to play, but does get scared. I find it is best to go on week evenings, never on weekends, it gets too busy, and some unsocialized dogs make their way in. It gets to be too much for my picky pooch. Hate to be directive, but some guidelines make it better for everyone involved! These and more are posted at the park. 1. Make sure your dog is neutered or spayed 2. Make sure your dog is socialized 3. Pay attention to how your dog is behaving- even great dogs have bad days at the park 4. I really wanted to like this park. I have been 4 times this year and 2 times my dog was picked on by other dogs, while the owners did nothing. The first time Casey was bitten, I figured "dogs will be dogs", but when the dog came back again and again and went after my dog while the owner did nothing, that was too much. First time it was two retriever mixes going after my dog and this past weekend it was a basset hound. I don't have a dog park near my condo and was willing to drive to this one and even become a member for $30 per year. However, if dog owners continue to bring overly aggressive dogs, it just isn't worth it. My dog usually has a blast with other dogs but some of the dogs at Puptown make the rest look bad. Guess I need to work on getting a DFA in my neighborhood. It's a shame really because the park really is clean and Casey had fun the other two times. Edited 5/27/08: I went this past Saturday and once again there was a dog owner that wasn't watching her dogs. One of her dogs kept humping other dogs and her black lab kept using my dog as a chew toy. The owners need to watch their dogs. I do keep going back because Casey loves to run with the big dogs. It's too bad a few owners ruin it for the rest of us. Edited 6/1/08: We went today and I must say things were very different. Dog owners were responsive if their dogs seemed to misbehave. I love Puptown. This dog park has a friendly group of dogs who come with people who are generally friendly as well. I think Puptown is nicer and less uptight than other dogparks in the city. Lots of regulars who will befriend you and your dog if you chat and play nice, and clean up your poop. Usually if there is a problem it seems to be more the owner than the dog. That said I think it is important to pay attention to your dog, but also be mindful of the other owners, because not everyone is comfortable with the same level of play. Do everyone a favor, and don't bring treats to the park. The dogs will smell them on you in a second and they can become a big distraction. I also worry about little kids in the park, so if you bring yours keep them close by so they dont get in the way of a high energy pack. read more

I think I was blinded by the light of having a new dog. Bee gets on pretty well here, but we have had some weir instances with people here. Including a troupe of stroller wielding mothers with infants. Can I just take a minute to go... WTF?! There was also an incident late at night where some crazy old bag kicked my dog because he jumped up at her to say hello. There are some great people who frequent the park, and we have gotten to know them which is nice. Of course there are the occasional dog owners too immersed in their book or phone to pay attention to their dog, but it happens. And when it does, it doesn't stop me from correcting the problem. I have taken my 7month old Great Dane to this dog park several times and he loves it. From what I have experienced and been told, there is the occasional aggressive pup here and there, but overall most of the pups and owners are friendly and responsible. I love the location right at Lawrence and LSD. It's a nice size area for the pups to play and plenty of toys laying around, not to mention there are plenty of extra poop bags on hand to help clean up the poop. read more

This is the best dog park we have found in the city. The play area is HUGE, and when it's nice out there are TONS of doggies playing and socializing. We don't often get too chatty with the other partrons, but everyone seems friendly. I haven't yet witnessed any bad experiences between dogs; most people seem to know their dogs pretty well and will step in if things seem to be going south. There is a group of people who help to maintain the park and they should be given proper recognition for doing a great job. It's is always pretty clean. Looking forward to more warm nights and weekends so we can drive over with our baby girl and let her run around! Pretty small. Has poop bags but was out when i visited Two dogs attacked each other when i arrived, but that's everywhere in the city. Has the emergency 24/7 vets on the door in bold letters with directions and numbers from that exact location. VERY nice feature i never noticed at other parks I've been to in the city. read more

What a GEM this place is for our little girl!! We went there after a fellow dog lover recommended that we try it and now we are regulars on the weekends. We don't live within walking distance of it. I wish we did as we would more than likely go everyday! Since I really only go on Saturday and Sunday mornings everything I mention will be based only on these 2 days..... Parking can be an issue some of the time, but really only in the summer when the little kids and their families invade to play soccer. We are early birds and usually get to the park around 8:00/8:30 and can sometimes beat the mass of cars. There is a small parking lot back by the community center and most of the time you can just park there if you can't find street parking. This is run by PUPTOWN and although it is a city run dog park, PUPTOWN is the group that takes care of it. You can go to www.puptown.org and learn more about it. We are a part of it and do our part in helping with time and donations. They do ask for a donation for each dog if you are regular attender. Don't worry you won't get the full court press, but it is with this money that can keep the park up and running and so much better than other ones. In the summer every other Saturday is a clean up, so if you don't want to fork over the money then come on one of those Saturdays and help clean. They always have Dunkin Donuts there as a sweet reward. The best thing about coming here are the people. I have made a lot of dog park friends. Everyone is pretty responsible for their dog and if there is one bad seed I will say the owner is quick to get the dog out of there. I have rarely seen anyone being a jerk to another owner. Everyone is very laid back and most importantly they care about the environment that their little pooch plays in! read more

This park was one of the best I have found for all size dogs. So many of them are not little dog friendly. I was in Chicago for the weekend and a native friend took Digger and I to Puptown and he had a great time. there were plenty of other little guys for him to play with and for the most part, people seemed to be paying attention to what their dogs were doing. Dear Weebles, I'm looking forward to taking you to Puptown tonight! I am so glad we finally decided to check this place out. Sure Hamlin is closer to your house and I know you like that just fine, but Puptown is THE BEST doggy park in town. Plus you don't get all dusty from the gravel like you do at Hamlin. Now that you have recently discovered the joys of water, it's really great that they have a sprinkler you can run through. You are wet and stinky afterwards but that's ok. It's also great that you can drink from the little doggy water fountain and have lots of toys to play with if there are no other doggies around. Luckily there are usually TONS of other doggies of varying size to play with. Mommy thinks the people there are very friendly too. Mommy also likes how clean and pretty the park is. But mommy knows what you like best is that you can run around in circles with other dogs until you can run no more! I love this park. It was recommended to us by a friend and Lily is now a regular. We have to drive to get there, but as soon as we round the corner to get there, she starts whining and gets super excited. The park is clean and the owners are active. We to have run into an unsocialized dog once in awhile, but the owners that I have personally encountered have been attentive and helpful. Lily can be a tad overzealous and most owners realize that this is just the nature of a huge play area. Love it! read more

I love puptown! I bring Riley here about 4 times a week. He runs and plays with other dogs and gets his energy out. The place is a bit smelly but what can you expect with a bunch of dogs running around? The place is pretty clean and owners are very good with picking up after their dogs. The reason why I took one star off is that there has been occasions where there are some aggressive dogs and owners will not do anything about it. I have seen a bigger dog attack a neighbors little puppy and the owner did not even do anything to stop it. Thankfully other people broke it up. The owner did not even apologize for his dog. Aside from the occasional jerk owners and their dogs, I love the fact that there is a place designed for my dog to run and play. read more

Hey douche bag, when your dog is constantly following me around, growling, and snapping at me, it is not "just playing around"! When I ask you to control your f'ng psyco killer dog, that does not mean to just grab it by the collar and take it 10 feet away and let it go. It just came right back after me! Irresponsible owners suck. After douche bag's girlfriend correctly pointed out to douche bag that I obviously didn't think their dog was "just playing around", the dogs and I had a good time. Everybody else seemed to be responsible for their dogs, the place was clean, and people seemed friendly. I liked the mulitple fresh water options. Also, good location...about a 3 minute car ride from my place. I think the biggest draw back (besides douche bag and his dog) is the concrete surface...it makes it harder for my dogs to run. I would prefer to have a grassy area. But, I realize the maintenance issues that go along with grass. I'll be back. read more

This place is really spacious and clean. This is one of the bigger parks that we have gone to. Lots of space for dogs to explore by themselves if they want. Or it's large enough to have a small herd of dogs run together without feeling crowded. Most of the park is asphalt and then on the borders there's gravel. There's a big tree in the middle has a structure built around it so it gives people a place to sit. However this does make it difficult to keep an eye on your dog since it is a bit of an obstruction. Samuel and I have been once and all the dogs and owners were really nice. It's a part of a bigger part so there's a nice area for a pre or post dog park walk. I have to drive my pooch to all the dog parks we go to since there's not one with in walking distance. This one is a little bit further for us but definitely worth the trip. read more

There is a ton of room for my dog to run around and enjoy herself. Each dog owner is super friendly and makes you feel welcome if they recognize that you're not a "regular" there. Our pup loves the ability to run around freely so close to home. Generally this park is wonderful full of wonderful pups and owners. On occasion you'll have someone who is a bit lax with their dog and they can be a bit aggressive during play. But overall this is a wonderful little closed off space for all kinds of pups. We see the same dogs and owners a lot, so it's nice to make new puppy (and human) friends. Something to keep in mind is that this place is kept up by volunteers, so do your part to contribute! When I first moved to Chicago and went to this dog park I thought it was a joke: super small, no grass or wood chips, right next to LSD, all cement. Well, 8 years later, after searching high and low, this is now my favorite dog park in Chicago. There usually seems to be a big variety of dogs and sizes. A lot of mutts, few designer dogs, and tons of sweet pit bulls. (I don't own one but love playing with them.) Most dogs are friendly and playful. I've never seen a dog fight. Owners seem responsible. I like that it is fully fenced (unlike the beach) and has generous sized entrance and exit corrals. I've even grown to appreciate the cement because it is so much less fuss than cleaning up after a muddy dog park experience. Chicago dog owners are just about the least friendly of anywhere I've ever been. They aren't rude, just painfully shy. Sometimes you go to Puptown and there will be five people standing in five separate areas not talking to each other. Yet Puptown still seems to be one of the friendliest dog parks I've found in Chicago. I can usually find an older person or more blue collar person who is not too freaked out to talk to strangers. Other pluses - usually no smokers, no cigars, no hung over trixies with their butts hanging out of too small sweat pants. read more

Well-maintained dog park, friendly people, and friendly dogs. I've been on a weekday and it has been fairly empty, but I went today (Sunday afternoon) and it was packed (in a good way). The owners were all fairly good at watching their dogs. The space is mostly blacktop with a lot of pee pebbles on the sides. There are low concrete walls for sitting, as well as a number of benches. I think some grass would've been nice but the area is also surrounded by a grassy park, so waste not want not, right? The pee pebbles are also fairly shaded. My dog likes to lie in them. Kinda gross, but whatever. Some dogs also LOVE the sprinkler that is constantly going, and it makes for some entertaining dog watching as they all run through it or try to avoid it while chasing balls. Love this dog park! I used to go to Wiggly Field all the time, and then moved a little up north and frequent Puptown at least twice a week. The atmosphere is much more positive that Wiggly. Owners are no where near as pretentious. Dogs can play fight without amateur dog owners getting their panties in a bind. All in all, the people are friendlier, conversation is easier to strike, there are less cliques in terms of the people - all together a much better experience. This place is very close to home and, well, that's all the good I can really say. I have a small breed dog. She is a definite follower but will protect when she feels fit. It stressed her out because she's growling to get the overpowering dogs away from her. This place really needs to invest in sections for larger breeds and smaller breeds. I've been in there once when two dogs started fighting and to see the reaction of everyone with small dogs was the proof in why it's necessary. All the small dogs were up in arms and the parents were looking around to make sure the fight wasn't near them. Imagine if a big dog goes off on a small dog. Which leads me to my next issue. People with aggressively playful or bully dogs tend to think nothing of their dog's issues. I've seen people not take it into account and dogs harrassed for long periods of time. The harrassed dog's owners were becoming annoyed as well. All the while the other owner is sitting down, reading a book or talking on a phone. I really don't see myself bringing my pup in here because I refuse to put her in a situation that will stress her out. Please look into getting separate sections for small and large breeds, then we'll see what my next review could be. read more

Have great affection for Puptown. Used to be very involved in maintenance and fundraising for the park until the inevitable volunteer burnout. Like all dog parks not funded by the city (especially one in dire financial straights), Puptown needs an energetic cadre of volunteers to ensure that it remains a safe and enjoyable park. Kudos to all those who are now involved. Would love to see more people step up. It can be a lot of fun and greatly satisfying to actively steward the park. If you have a passion for fundraising and community activism, get involved! My personal dream for the park would be a designated area for small dogs. Our doggy, Jonas, loves this park. We have had nothing but positive experiences at Puptown. I love the setting, there, in the park. Also if your pooch isn't adequately wore out from Puptown, it's only a short walk to Montrose Dog Beach. Such a diverse selection of dogs too. One day Jonas is playing with a miniature poodle, the next, a 150 lbs. St. Bernard. If you're ever in the park, look for the cutest dog in the world.
