This was my first visit to Purple Patch and it was pretty good, but there are some things I wish were different. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space is in the basement of two long townhouses with a small passage in the middle. It's an unusual layout, with the host stand around the middle of the first townhouse (a small bar area is in front of it) and I had no idea they had the second townhouse space until they took us through the small passage.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a Wednesday at 6:30 PM and the place was busy. Our dining room was pretty noisy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was also difficult to get the waiter's attention, because the long, narrow layout meant he couldn't see parts of our table. Also, at the start of the meal, he overfilled the water pitcher, spilling water on the table and floor. That said, he was very friendly and helpful with suggestions and splitting the bill. We visited for a minor special occasion, which the restaurant recognized with a small card -- this was a nice touch, and one that many higher end restaurant miss. The menu is very large and a bit overwhelming for a first time visitor. There are 16 desserts. I like the variety, but it feels like overkill, and frankly I'm skeptical of all restaurants with huge menus -- is every dish really a winner? will they execute everything well? (Side note: the website menus link to Canva files which are super annoying to browse) We got the Laing ($16) with mushrooms ($5), Chicken Adobo ($19), and Sizzling Sisig ($22). All three came with rice, with a small upcharge for garlic rice. The inclusion of rice, and the upcharge, could have been more clearly noted on the menu. We shared our dishes, and I would have liked some serving spoons included with them. My favorite was the Laing. I had never had it before, so the flavors were novel and I liked them a lot. The stewed taro leaves reminded me a bit of creamed spinach, in a good way. It had strong coconut flavor, plus some spice when you got a chili pepper. The adobo was good but not great. I liked that the chicken was deboned -- a pleasant surprise. Flavors were good, but I wanted them to be punchier. The Sisis was my least favorite. It was a standard version of the dish, not very interesting. We also had the Ube Bread Pudding with Ube Ice Cream ($12) for dessert. This was good, but I wouldn't describe it as a bread pudding. It was thinner and denser than a traditional bread pudding, with a shape and consistency that reminded me more of a brownie or a crumble. I would love to return and try more of the menu. read more

I've been wanting to try PP for a long time and I'm so happy I did! Went in for brunch on a Saturday without reservations and was able to grab a spot at the bar so I'd recommend making reservations in advance if possible. All of the food was 5/5. Flavor and quality was there. Service was excellent. The bartender was very attentive and friendly. I've been to Purple Patch in DC each time I've been here and it NEVER disappoints. Ube treats are a must-try here. I love the sweet breakfast options (I've had Ube French Toast and Pancakes in the past) and the savory egg platters that taste great without swimming in oil. I've also had crab torta(?) in the past, which I really enjoyed but haven't seen again since I first came like four years ago. Purple Patch is super popular, so if you don't have a reservation I'd recommend getting there right when it opens. Even about an hour after is okay. The earlier the better, though. I always have gone on a Saturday or Sunday and called beforehand to check if they had room. Parking isn't too difficult to find, but it WILL be street parking and you may need to walk 5-10 minutes to the restaurant. read more

I had a mixed experience last year, but despite the hiccups, I thought the food was great and wanted to come back for a special occasion. My experience was SO much better this time around. Last year, I walked in for brunch hours on a weekday and experienced great food and friendly staff, but confusing signage and iffy service. This year, we made reservations ahead of time and were greeted with a personalized sign (a sweet gesture from the manager welcoming my group for my bachelorette). We opted to add pork as our protein. It overall was well-seasoned and coconut-forward but some of the pork pieces were a little too fatty for me. If you like creamed spinach or palak paneer like me, I think you'll enjoy the laing! We also got the spicy adobo fried chicken since it was Chef Patrice's winning recipe. My wife is Filipino and wanted an authentic experience. After some research we found Purple Patch. From the outside it looks like a small house or cafe. Once you go inside the restaurant opens up and is spacious enough where we didn't feel cramped with other diners. The staff was caring and attentive. We ordered a variety of different foods that I myself cannot name correctly, but my wife knew how to say it perfectly. After tasting all of them, I could say that they all were delicious and my wife felt like she was at home at her family's house and was eating a homemade meal. A quaint Filipino restaurant that makes the most of its space in a small underground hallway, although they also have an upstairs dining that I've yet to see. The staff are very attentive and caring and go above and beyond. They are known for their hot cocktails (their hot apple cider is incredible) and their brussel sprout starter that is superb. Had a wonderful time visiting the Purple Patch. My brother chose this spot to celebrate his birthday with a small family brunch. It was a great time. They have a nice outdoor seating area that is covered on the street. It was perfect for the fall day. Our server was attentive and accommodating. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable about each dish and gave a thorough recommendation for each question we asked. The interior is well decorated. It's always a delicious meal at Purple Patch! Their calamabsi ginger tea was perfect for warming up on a f cold night. The crab fat pork and garlic rice were so rich together. I also loved the sinigang, which I had never tried before - it was comforting and the broth was so flavorful (especially paired with garlic rice). The sliders seemed way smaller than last time I was here, but the flavor was as good as ever. And of course we had to end with the excellent honey butter rolls with ube ice cream! A dinner so memorable, I'm still reminiscing and asking my husband "how do we fit Purple Patch into our next DMV Trip" For a group of 7 of us (cousins, siblings, and partners), we wanted to find a family-style spot that we could all dive in for unique flavors. Additionally the restaurant called us in advance to ask how they could make our dinner special. I had no idea and they gave the idea of making a sign. I said sure list all our names on it. I thought it'd be a sign with marker. It was typed up and formatted with purple flowers on it. I noticed for birthdays and other occasions, they did the same. How hospitable. This totally started out dinner off on the right foot. Then we got drinks. There were various options and I really loved the Ube Mojito. My husband enjoyed the fruitiness of the Palawan, and he even ordered a second one! Ghost Face Manila was also a popular order at our table for the cousins of age; I even added that drink on after. The younger cousins got mango nectar or calamansi hot tea; all very delicious and refreshing. A full spread was ordered to feed us and try various things on the menu. From Lumpia, Lechon Kawali, Crispy Eggplant, Spicy Fried Chicken Adobo, Patrice's Bicol Express Ribs, Bagoog Fried Rice with Longanisa, Coconut braised short rip adobo, red snapper relleno, and crab fat pancit -- we were absolutely in awe of the flavors and how good it was. There was nothing left on the table and we were licking plates. I'm mentally drooling now looking back at the photos. Everything had great flavors. I can't even pick a top one because they all just fit together. Our server actually gave some of these recommendations to us and it was perfect; everything complemented each other. Purple Patch is so very good and in Mount Pleasant, one of my favorite DC neighborhoods that I don't visit often enough. I don't have much of a background in Filipino food, outside of lumpia, so Purple Patch was a wonderful brunch experience from start to finish. The staff were delightful when it came to celebrating my birthday, including a sign which was a surprise to me. Everyone was patient as my friend and I asked for recommendations. Almost everything that I ate and drank had Ube, including the Ube Mojito which was delightfully sweet, and not too overwhelming. The only dish that left me wanting for more was the Ube Tre Leches which was slightly too moist for me, although that's signature of the dessert. If you want to impress someone who is visiting DC, you definitely want to come here. The menu is expensive and there is something for everyone. They specialize in Filipino food and they have a huge emphasis on ube hence the name Purple Patch. I definitely recommend the spicy adobo fried chicken. The chicken was fried perfectly and the slightly adobo spicy sauce makes it extra unique and the rice is kind of like a wetter Spanish tomato rice. The sizzling sisig pieces of fried pork so if you love Chicharron, then you will like this paired with rice it helps cut the fattiness of the meat. One thing that we did not do well was that we didn't mix in the egg fast enough we kind of let it cook a bit too long on the dish. Nonetheless, it is deliciously fatty and crunchy pork pieces. The Ube bread pudding wasn't stellar in the sense that the bread pudding was a bit clumpy in some parts, but the flavors were delicious. I also thought I wouldn't like the halo halo, but it was a delicious mix of coconut, Ube ice cream, flan, red bean, and condensed cream, so you get a little bit of which makes me happy. Our server was super nice and note that they do have an automatic staff service charge 20% but they still provide a friendly service even though they are aware that they will automatically get 20%. I've been looking for legit Filipino food in the DMV and this place is it. You can tell right away if a restaurant has good Filipino food just by their lumpia. If the lumpia is crispy, rolled tight, with tender and seasoned filling, then you can rest assured that everything else will be great. First off, Purple Patch has a nondescript downstair entrance so you don't think you are walking into a hole in the wall. But when you go through the door you are immediately in a spacious bar area with comfortable seating and fun lighting. The restaurant is in the back and from what I could tell, ample tables. The place seemed very busy for a Sunday evening so I might suggest a reservation on traditionally busy days of the week. I started with the Lumpia and a San Miguel which brought me back to my navy days in the Philippines. Next I ordered the Pancit and Short Rib Adobo and both were a punch of flavor. What a fabulous, fabulous, fabulous meal we had at Purple Patch! To kick off my new supper club we voted and chose this place. Our group of twelve dined off in the side room and the reservation was easy enough to make off of Resy. They had a sign waiting for us with gorgeous flowers. It felt like private dining while still ordering a la carte. The food was all incredible - we tried a variety of dishes but my personal favorite were the lumpia, tokwa, and pancit. Everything was incredibly flavorful and fresh. We were all raving about how good the food was and this is the perfect place to share with a bunch of friends. Just make sure to save room for dessert because that's the best part! Service, food, and ambiance were all amazing. We will definitely be back (hopefully for brunch!) and I'm so grateful to the restaurant for providing such a great experience. read more

Food is absolutely delicious, filling and light! Amazing vegan options and also plenty of meat options, great place for people who have different dietary needs. For context, I was with a group for an event, but service was great! From the time I walked in and asked for where the party was located, I was greeted with a smile and brought to the back area. One of my favorite spots in DC. Last time I was there I tried their Laing, a dish from Bicol. It is made from taro leaves (One of my favorite edible plants all together I am finding) stewed in coconut milk with spices and served with jasmine rice. I like it way more than I expected. The texture was rougher than spinach in saag and reminded me a tad of grape leaves. I think there might have been a slight smokey flavor. I really like the flavor combination with the spicy chillies on top. It was SO delicious. I loved it so much I considered a repeat and I don't often do repeats when visiting bigger cities since I want to try new cuisines and dishes I have never had. On my last visit here I also got some dessert and loved it as well: Biko, a Filipino sticky rice cake. The rice is cooked with coconut milk and sugar until it reaches a thick, sticky, pudding-like consistency. It was caramel-like and the rice was cohesive, so good. On other visits here I also really enjoyed the Adobo and the Calamansi tokwa tofu with fried rice. I liked these plates on the regular menu better than the happy hour plates (From happy hour I have tried the Atchara salad and the vegetarian taste of Philippines- Both pretty good but not my fave) I was curious to try the Atchara since I realized that word / root being used for similar salads in other places like singapore so wanted to try that Filipino version which was atad sweet for me but really fun to try. All times I have visited this restaurant were fun and the service has always been good when I sat to eat at the restaurant. I really like that the menu is labeled for different dietary needs. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! Purple Patch was highly recommended by a friend so I had to check it out for myself! I stopped by with a friend and we really enjoyed both the meal and the overall vibe of space. The restaurant has a very intimate feel. It's tucked slightly underground and set up kind of like a shotgun house: long, narrow and cozy. When you walk in theres a bar immediately to the right and as you move further in, there is more dining space. It's a very snug space so you'll be fairly close to others who are dining. One thing to note is that some of the hot dishes come out sizzling so there's a fair amount of smoke that hangs in the air. It didn't bother me and can add to the drama and character of the space so just something to be aware of. Service was warm and welcoming so no complaints there!. The staff was attentive and friendly which made for a great experience. We tried a bunch of things off the menu. We started with the Mama Alice's Lumpias and the Purple Patch wings and both were pretty tasty. The Purple Patch beef sliders where also solid. For my main, I had the coconut curry chicken with rice which was pretty good but I found myself wanting a bit more flavor to make it stand out for me. To finish things off I had the Ube Cheesecake. You really can't go wrong with ube! It complimented the meal well. Overall while nothing we had blew me away everything was good! It was a enjoyable experience and I will definitely go back to try more items on the menu. And the prices were really good for DC. I can definitely see why Purple Patch has a loyal following. read more
