Good ice cream, friendly service. The owner was working behind the counter and talked to me for a while after we received our food. Nice guy, and very proud of the business he's established. As the girls were preparing our ice cream, I watched him train one of the new girls, to make sure we got enough ice cream in the cone. We stumbled upon this place while en route to Custer State Park. The pie was good, but the sign outside stating they have homemade ice cream is misleading. They serve Blue Bell ice cream, which is hardly homemade. If you look up the ingredients for their vanilla, it has about 10 different things in it, including high fructose corn syrup and many preservatives. Real, homemade vanilla ice cream has milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla. Simple and good. Go for the pie, skip the ice cream. Oh, and just like everything else in South Dakota, they will be closed for the season beginning on October 15th, so you might not be able to here until 2010. Seems like the entire state shuts down for some strange reason. read more

We stopped here for dessert after having dinner at another restaurant on the main drag. We thought we had room for dessert until we each ate one of the generous slices of pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. (They have a wide variety of ice cream flavors, but who cares when you're having pie?!) One of us played it safe with blackberry. The crust was flakey, the filling generous. The other had the special - rhubard/raspberry/jalapeño. Who woulda thunk? It was wonderful with just the right amount of burn - nothing vanilla ice cream can't tame! This was a nice surprise- stopped with parents on a recent trip- had the chicken pot pie- which was a almost a cream chicken soup with some veggies with a pie cookie placed on top. I liked it- my dad had the potato soup which was very similar to the pot pie filling with chunks of potato. The dining room is small but I remember thinking it looked clean. I tried a piece of the bumble berry- which had something like apple, blueberry, strawberry and I think rhubarb in it. I had it heated and a scoop of ice cream. The Pie was Good. I think its run by a young couple and I hope they do not burn out. I did not have high hopes when my mom spotted it- being painted purple and looking like a farm house- but crankiness was setting in and we were tired of driving up and down main street trying to guess at what might be ok. read more

We waited a long time for our lunch but the staff did warn us they were busy and it would take an extra 15-20 minutes. I'm giving this place 2 stars because my husband's blueberry pie was pretty good. When I ordered my pie, I asked which was the better out of the apple or cherry pie. Two ladies behind the counter said apple, so that's what I bought. It certainly looked amazing. However, it wound up being the blandest apple pie I've ever had. It was if the baker fell asleep and forgot to add any spices whatsoever. I ate two bites and threw the rest out. Even my husband said it was bad. I took a chance and gave this place more of my money, taking home a slice of cherry pie (I'd just run a local 100 mile race that weekend and was desperate for tasty pie). The cherry was better than the apple, but honestly I've had better from Village Inn. Their ice cream is good (probably because they don't make it themselves). I'd stick to that. read more

I gave it 2 stars only for their chicken pot pie and fast service. We ordered Blueberry pie and Raspberry Rhubarb Jalapeño pie - both were disappointing, the blueberry much more so. The thickener was so thick that the pie was like rubber. No juice at all to the point the blueberries were dry and the filling around the berries was almost white. In summary very rubbery. Could be an off day. The rhubarb had far more juice. In general, if your in town and hungry, try the chicken pot pie. Otherwise just keep on going. read more

We stopped in while visitIng Mount Rushmore. Found it to be as described by most. Great pie, good meals. I have four kids 6 to 15 years of age. They all found something they would eat. Chicken pot pie dinner was favorite of most. We were bummed that some of the pie flavored were sold out by 6 pm, but that most speaks to the fact they were good pies. Ugh, what an experience. Seated in the back for table service at 5pm on a weekday evening. Waitress, clearly not new but nevertheless borderline incompetent, messes up our order in a couple of forgivable but annoying ways. Then, we get our food, and my sandwich doesn't come out with its bag of chips, only the side salad. Waitress: "It's a salad or a bag of chips." Me: "Well, the menu says AND." Waitress: "That's not how it works with that entree." I pull the menu back out and show it to her, and she reacts as if I just called her baby ugly or something. I explain that I don't care what the restaurant thinks the meal price includes, if the menu everyone is ordered off of says something different. The service went downhill from there. The food was 3 stars average (mac 'n cheese, 1.5 stars -- let's not kid ourselves, this is one notch above Kraft), and the cream pie I tried was 4 stars and yummy. But overall this experience was unacceptable, a true standout. I hope they fix the menu AND the waitress' service attitude. (Not OR, ha ha.) read more

They have great ice cream. Took me a while to finish a two scoop plus cone. I liked the birthday cake but loved the Mint Chip. The cone with chocolate and sprinkles was actually a part chocolate cone with sprinkles some how sticking to the cone. The service was good, and scoop sizes were great. We were a little let down by the Purple Pie Place. The ice cream is Blue Bunny, (Not a bad thing, but not special) and my GF's peanut butter pie slice was still half frozen, and did not taste homemade. I had a slice of cherry pie, which was okay, but I have had better at Village inn and Baker's Square. They are also a little on the pricey side. When we arrived there was a long line out the door and I patiently waited my turn change the speed apart from everybody else got up to the front of the door still there waiting about 17 minutes nobody came to the door I open the door and said can I come in and the guy looked at me and said well yeah of course why are you standing there very rudely to me I could not believe his attitude he was older gentleman I believe it was the owner I then proceeded to order a banana split and they automatically started making it without asking my choice of ice cream which I've never encountered before and had a attitude when I asked for my own choices of ice cream and then when I did ask for my ice cream still didn't give me what I ordered. The ice cream was not a good quality because there wasn't a lot of taste to it and a lot of chunks of ice for inside of the ice cream which I've never come across before. The two teenagers are working there seem to be afraid of the owner because he's barking orders at them respectfully like he should have been! We stayed in Custer for 5 nights and our group stopped for pie and ice cream every night. The rhubarb pie was the best (among many other varieties). It happens to be our favorite type of pie and to find it in Custer was amazing. Homemade crust and hard-working family service made this adorable decorated place a delight. One night we noticed that the owner came out to a customer (that had been in front of us) and told him he gave him the incorrect change and handed him $10. We stopped for lunch and pie on our way through Custer, like everyone else. The purple color caught our eye, the building looked cute, and the parking lot was full, so we popped-in the check it out. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their food and the servers were running around like crazy .. we stayed. We had a fresh vegetable panini and a chicken salad sandwich served in a sourdough roll. Both were fresh and used quality ingredients. My only complaint is that both needed more herbs for my taste. Some fresh dill or rosemary in the chicken salad would have made it a real winner. The rhubarb pie was very good balancing both the tart and the sweet. The crust was excellent. Kathi had peach pie ala mode. The fruit was all fresh and the ice cream is Blue Bunny, a fine ice cream. If I had made a second trip through Custer I would have had one of their hand made, Blue Bunny ice cream malts. They looked sooooo good. Given the tourest nature of the area it was all much more than I expected and we both left very pleased. read more
