So sad to see such a wonderful establishment like Quan Hop dropping their quality in the most important department of taste and quality. Very bland flavor profile when I ordered their famous Bun Rieu Oc tonight for Dinner at 18:30 pm. I was disappointed to see that this simple dish is so lacking in so many ways. The broth is not vibrant and flavorful as you would expect and they sure are skimpy on the fresh ingredients such as Vietnamese herbs and spices. The fermented shrimp paste was so watered down and no hot Thai chili peppers made fresh to order. The famous crab balls or crab roe is very limited and no pork bones. They definitely refined the Bun Rieu style here for a very specific reason and audience. Big disappointment but at least the jack fruit salad was decent and edible to eat. Service was standard- not exceptional but not bad either, about what you'd expect from most Vietnamese spots in gg/westminster. They offer a pretty extensive menu with a wide variety of Vietnamese dishes, including pho, bun bo hue and plenty of rice options. I ordered the banh beo, ga roti, and com xuong ram. Both the roti and xuong ram were good- slightly on the oily side but packed with flavour. I appreciated that they de-bone the chicken thighs for the ga roti which made it much easier to eat. The good: This is one of my aunt's favorite restaurants so she took me here to experience it recently. There is ample parking! The interior is large (for Vietnamese restaurant standards) and good for bigger groups as well as strollers. They also have outdoor seating. I came with 2 kiddos and we didn't feel cramped. We got the banh it banh ram, banh beo, bun ca (I've never seen this salmon noodle dish elsewhere before) and taro and corn che. I liked how the salmon noodle dish had kubocha squash in it. It was a unique dish that was lighter and tasted healthy. Banh beo was my favorite dish. It wasn't too thick and the shredded shrimp on top was very nice. The nuoc mam also tasted good. They have a lot of menu options. The bad: The taro and corn che were too sweet. Even without the added coconut on top it was too sweet. The banh it banh ram was heavier in grease than the same dish at other restaurants. The interesting: They have 2 fun fish tanks inside that are very fun and interesting (especially for kids). Taste wise, they're both average, not too good but not bad either. Also there are no utensils or condiments on the table at all, you must ask for everything. Today, I got a bowl of bun bo hue, plate of banh beo, & some banh it ram (idk the English translation so if you're not Vietnamese, just look at the English list of ingredients under each menu item to find out what you're eating). They ratio of beef to noodles is a little off in the sense that you get WAY more noodles than the amount of beef in your bowl. Bun bo hue itself was delicious & savory as could be. Banh it ram was fresh & hot also, & wasn't too sticky to eat. It's a great combo of chewy & crunchy & the meat inside is a nice treat. The plate of banh beo is something I always order when here because (in my humble opinion) no place does it better than them. My favorite appetizer if anything. Atmosphere: well-lit interior, plenty of natural light w/ window blinds available for those extremely sunny days & you don't want to sit in direct sunlight, extremely spacious, comfortable seating. I always aim to sit at a booth. Music choice varies from day to day but most of the time it's tolerable & played at a low volume to act as background noise. They also have other central Vietnamese dishes such as bun bo hue (spicy beef soup), goi hen (clam salad), etc. Banh beo: about $11 for a tray of 8 cups of rice cake. After pouring the fish sauce to the cup, the rice cake can be scooped out and eaten as once, very savory but light at the same time. Each one of us had one tray of banh beo. Goi hến: small tiny clams mixed with shredded banana flowers, variety of mints, chilly pepper, and fish sauce, served with fried shrimp chips. We also got pho here. This place is ok but nothing amazing. I was looking for good bún tôm thịt nướng chả giò so my mom told me about this place. Problem is wherever I go, bf and son want to order pho. This was on the menu but in reality, you really shouldn't order pho at a place that doesn't have pho in the title and I'll tell you why. The pho here was awful. They don't sell wide noodle option, their take out option comes in a box not bowl to make your pho in and the noodles are raw not cooked. It is not advisable to order pho from this place if you are doing take out. As for the salmon with rice, and bún tôm thịt nướng, I liked it except for the chả giò (egg roll). Probably wouldn't come back here though. Our 5 orders came out to $90 and left a little to be desired. I am a Bu'n Bo' Hue connoisseur, and I have to say the bu'n Bo' here is HORRIBLE! It has absolutely no flavor, just beef broth disguised as bu'n Bo'! And trust me, I've eaten all around Orange County for the best bu'n Bo'. This place has to be one of the worst place I've had it. Also, my bu'n Bo' did NOT even come with blood cakes!!! When I was there, I saw them brining out a different noodle soup to another table (mi' quang, which is not supposed to have blood cakes in it, but it did!) So I waived down the waiter and asked him very politely: Me: Hello uncle, my bu'n Bo' does not have blood cakes in it. But that mi' quang have it?!? Waiter: Yes! We don't include blood cakes in your bu'n Bo', but we put it in mi' quang. (Anyone who knows Vietnamese noodle soup will want to burn down this restaurant down at this point.) I did not want to embarrass the restaurant in front of other customers at this point. But after writing good reviews for other restaurants that actually makes great proper quality food and services for their customers, I cannot help but write a bad proper review for this restaurant. I also ordered the clam chucked Vietnamese cracker appetizer. Now most other place give you a plate full of clams (about 75% clams to 25% salad and other toppings, or better). My wife and I came here based on a recommendation. We both love pho. So that's what we ordered. My wife got filet mignon pho and i got meatball and filet mignon pho. My wife loves potstickers, so they were ordered. I did caution her that potstickers are not the same in Vietnamese cuisine. She did not understand what i meant by "you might like the egg rolls better." They don't have Vietnamese beers. So I ordered something else. We got the potstickers and they were what i thought they would be. They're not fried. They're steamed and very soft. She was put off by the texture alone. I ate two of them. Their filling is neither extensive or that flavorful. They're ok. The pho came with al of the normal accompaniments, though i'm normally used to a pepper, which was not there. The hoisin and siracha side was very small: i needed more. i asked for more siracha and the server appeared annoyed by my request. after steeping the sides and adding the sauces, the pho broth was very good. There wasn't much meat. It was literally one meatball cut up and a few pieces of meat. It was the least amount of meat i've ever had in eating pho more than 500 times. But that's this place. The location is nice. The room is fine. The food is basically good, though not great. I'd eat here again to see if it was a bad night. it it was still pretty good. read more
