What a great way to start the morning. I Decided to go for a stroll and ended up at the market and spent a good chunk of time then walked out with a bag of groceries. Reasonably priced and a great selection of products. If you ever want to prepare a meal, there's great selection.. Market city coffee was fantastic, bought some cheeses, and picked up a borek pastry. Market is separated into different buildings. Seafood, deli and meats, and I didn't get to walk to the produce section. I stopped in at nine, but according to Google, it opens at six. In a shopper. I saw an IG clip that featured some the eateries at Queen Vic Market. I said I gotta go when I am in Melbourne. We shared a Turkish borek, porchetta panini fr Rubens, and a char siu meat pie fr Amelies. They have a ton of prepared food options like baked goods, sausages, fried chicken, ethnic food, charcuterie and raw seafood. First of all, the borek was a nice starter. It had a lot of fillings, and made me want to go to Turkey. On the other hand, the pie was a bit disappointing. It was bland and the crust wasn't flaky. Lastly, the porchetta was fantastic. The pork was really tender and nicely seasoned. The crackling on top was genius. Regarding the ambiance, the grounds are massive. The food hall has prepared food on both ends, and fresh meat & seafood in the middle. A lot of people come w/ carts. All of the vendors were super nice. We even bought some bread, charcuterie and marinated octopus for later. I highly recommend QVM if you visit Melbourne. They have something for everybody. read more

I loved the market! There are so many awesome vendors and such of variety of things to buy. I got to try Tasmanian cherries, Portuguese tarts, a chicken skewer from Lucky Lane, fresh juice, beer, sushi, and scallops. My two favorite parts were Lucky Lane and "The Shed" Brick Lane. Definitely glad I booked my Melbourne hotel next to this market knowing I'd spend a good chunk of time there! The market is huge with so much to see - I spent almost an entire day here! Really great lively atmosphere with lots of people and the large downtown buildings in the backdrop of the market were beautiful! There was a great fruit and vegetable selection - I choose a few different fruit options to take back to my hotel later to enjoy. I LOVE mangosteen but it's hard to get fresh ones in the US so was super stoked to see those available! The indoor section with cheeses, meat and seafood was also super impressive! I snacked on some lobster and oysters then went outside and had some sugarcane juice and the BEST MUSSELS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. Such a great day at this market!! read more

This is a pretty big market, though it does happen to be the major one in Melbourne. Actually, there are two distinct areas, one where there are a lot of stalls that sell random stuff, and another that is focused entirely upon produce. What I do like about this place are the night markets that they hold, one for winter and one for summer. This can certainly be one of those places that does get pretty packed at times, especially during the night markets. This place was an absolute delight! A huge array of cuisines, tons of different beverage, options, specialty meat and cheese, shops, galore, a massive seafood selection, and trinket type shops as far as the I can see in another area of the building. The whole place is wonderful! We picked up an array of olives, a number of different cheeses from around the world, and a souvenir kangaroo scrotum that had been made into a bottle opener. I think we also got a pair of shoes and a board game. This sounds more like going to a swap meet that has charcuterie... And while it is nicer than that, that's actually not that far off. People here were pretty uniformly, friendly, though the folks who were selling the kangaroo scrotum bottle opener, we're not overly interested in haggling on Price. They assured me they were very rare. We went in the middle of the day on a weekend, and the place was bustling with tons of different people looking for lots of different stuff. Went on a Tuesday morning and all I can hope is that we missed the good part of the market. What we experienced was not compelling. Lots of low quality items for sale, imitations, and seemingly Chinese knockoffs. Yes, there were fruits and vegetables but didn't see anything that screamed quality even among fresh items. Amazing market that is spread out over two city blocks in Melbourne. So fun to explore. So big that we didn't even make it to the far side after 2 hours. So interesting to explore the Queen Victoria Market that once was.....land for the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, the Old Melbourne Cemetery, a hay market, a corn market, a produce market, and eventually the Queen Victoria Market. So nice to peruse the lanes filled with so many treats. Great place for souvenir shopping with many items 4 or 5 for $10 AUD (about $6.50 USD). Grab a cute koala or kangaroo. Stock up on magnets. Get a fun and furry pencil bag. Grab a fresh fruit juice. The ABC, apple, beet and carrot, was so delicious and so refreshing. The lemonade was good as well. It will come with a striped paper straw because no single use plastic straws are used in the QVM. Buy socks, socks and more socks. Koala socks. Kangaroo socks. Flag socks. So many socks! So cute. Lots of fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses and sweet treats. Loved the Fun Blocks that made a Pinocchio. A great place to explore and get a souvenir or two for family and friends. read more

This was one of our favorite highlights of Melbourne! Both day and night! We did day shopping and came back on Wednesday night for the night market! Quality/Quantity - This will be hard to explain, so you just have to come here both day and night for the experience. Here it goes: Mussels! They had the best steamed mussels I have had on this two month long trip! If you know any better, please message me! Fresh produce, plenty of choices and competition. Think HUGE farmers market. Plus they compost! See pictures. Historic information posted throughout the place, making good and easy reading while my wife shops. Many souvenir options, and inexpensive. Many UGG products, but they were TOO inexpensive and I did not want to risk buying fake products. Plus if you are following, we ran out of luggage space a long time ago... We sampled too many different foods, see pictures. I am sure I did not do a good enough job taking pictures of all the foods and drinks we had. Night Market - Was a very different atmosphere. A young and hip crowd, I fit in perfectly, lol. I actually liked the night market experience even better than the day trip. So much energy. Silent disco, several live bands, entertainment, plenty of alcohol, brewery, etc. Again, we got food from so many different vendors, see pictures. Queen Victoria Market is an authentic, bustling, inner-city market that has been the heart and soul of Melbourne for over 140 years. It is home to over 600 small businesses and it's a great place to discover fresh and specialty produce, hand-made and unique products, great coffee & food, souvenirs and clothing. It was packed with fresh, colorful & meticulously displayed fresh food. We enjoyed talking with the friendly traders that gave us many samples. The multicultural stalls provide special events & festivals. I enjoyed looking at all of the Asian stands, exotic Seafood, lamb and meats, produce, extensive varieties of eggs, wines, beers, cheeses, teas, NY Deli, appetizing, pastries, candies .... Many vendors were giving complementary samples and everything was exceptionally delicious! We saw vendors selling American, Greek, Malaysian, Turkish, Canadian, Thai ... foods. We walked outside and to the back of the food hall finding shoes, clothing, inexpensive jewelry, woodwork ... And things that we would find at the typical American flea market. There were many clean restrooms and water fountains around the enormous food hall. There were tables set up to eat our purchases. Wednesday evenings the Queen Victoria Market opens for a Night Market, showcasing global street food, live music & entertainment, festival bars, specialty shopping and a great Melbourne night out. I have visited this open air and closed roofing market during past visits to Melbourne but didn't Yelp about my experiences until today. Lots of vendors from souvenirs to jewelry. Fresh produce and garmets are all on display for people to purchase. There are also plenty of food kiosks from food trucks to physical building spots with lots of ethnic food choices. It will take you about 1 hour to fully walk around the building and visit the food court across the street. QVM is on the Victorian Heritage Register and the National Heritage List. It was created in 1878. It is open Tuesday and Thursday-Sunday. The market is much larger than I imagined. There are plenty of cheap souvenirs among other things you can purchase here. There are also vendors who sell fruits and vegetables, similar to a farmers market. Inside the food hall there are meat & fish, dairy, and seafood products. While browsing around, I also stopped at American Doughnut Kitchen for a snack. read more

I've bought prints from local photographers, ornaments, soap, crafts, and of course incredible coffee (Melbourne has the best coffee in the world, don't make me fight you on this point). The food prices are a little bit more expensive, but that is what you can expect with all the specialty shops gathered in one spot. Every time we come to Melbourne, we come here the first day and load up on snacks (cheeses, bread, you name it). They sell magnets, belts, women's scarves, bags with Australian engraving on it and many more. This is the largest market I have ever been to. The entire place is set up in categories non food and food items. I started off checking out the non food items, mostly souvenirs and clothes. The souvenirs tables were very popular with all the tourists but it was lot's of cheaply made items and every table had the same stuff. Save your money for some real Australian gifts elsewhere. I spent more time checking out the produce section, so many fresh fruits and vegetables at great prices. Lot's of different exotic items I have never seen before. They allow people to sample many of the items too. Seemed like many of the produce items were larger than I've seen before... watermelon were ridiculous. Over at the seafood and meat area was one of my favorite places. Again, the items here are huge. Lobsters and crabs the size of my head. I had a few fresh oysters... so good. Some many deli stands, I got pepperoni, salami, different cheeses... everything I had was wonderful. There's also food trucks and other ready to go food options. I also tried a hot fritter from the American donut van.. it was good but not worth standing in the super long line. If your in town definitely check this place out for some fresh food. read more

If you are a foodie this is a must visit. If I lived here, I would buy my fish, meat, cheese and produce here. The quality of the meat, especially lamb is outstanding. As a tourist, I would come here to eat especially if you like oysters or cheese. I got a dozen Tazmanian oysters for $19 and they were good. They are Pacific oysters and it was interesting how different they tasted compared to Pacific oysters from Washington. If you don't like oysters or cheese, the food court had some decent looking food at low to moderate costs. As far as shopping for merchandise, most of the clothing looked like something that wouldn't last very long. A good place to look for really cheap souvenirs though. LOL As another reviewer mentioned, it's got that divey, tourist trap look and feel. It's a historic place though and worth a visit. read more

QVM is the largest market in the Southern Hemisphere - it's absolutely massive. There are several buildings selling all kinds of foodstuffs, snacks, souvenirs and really just about everything. The dairy building was my favorite, with its vintage stalls and incredible displays. Everywhere I looked, there was something I wanted to eat! The seafood area had beautiful displays too. We couldn't leave without eating some things - starting with hot fritters from the American Donut Van. Yum! The Mister had a giant sausage from one of the places in the dairy hall, and a giant pot Jetta sandwich. I had a great curry from Drums in the food court. In terms of the "non food shopping" it's pretty much all the same and mostly total crap. If you need souvenirs they have you well covered. Definitely check to see if there are any night markets during your trip - we checked one out and it was great! QVM is absolutely worth a visit and even better, it's in the free tram zone. read more

I visited the market on a slow weekday where not all the vendors were open/present and there weren't many people wandering. I can imagine the thrill of visiting this open-air market on one of the bustling weekend days! It was a fun experience and great to see the craftspeople making and selling their pieces. I grabbed soup from Dave's and really enjoyed sitting in the warm fall sun, listening to music (and Myna's singing), and people watching. It looks like they are constructing more market halls and I'm interested to see the updates. The neighborhood has lots of great street art too! I did walk around here (about a block from the market) alone as the sun was going down and it got fairly deserted, with the exception of a large amount of homeless people. read more

Awesome place. So much in a compact area: A good use of space arranged in a way that you don't have to walk miles in between things. Also, categories of items are grouped together so you can target your visit. Unless you plan to meander, I suggest selecting the areas you really want to visit, especially if your time is limited. For me, it was ready-to-eat food all the way, so that meant the fruits and vegetables shed, food court, and deli section. You can rent a rolling trolley (a two-level shopping cart) to help you. Bring your own bags to carry your goodies! There are plastic bags for fruits and vegetables, but no other bags available. I always keep 2-3 folded reusable bags in my purse since more and more places are banning them. Mostly the produce is widely available, although I saw some exotics. Look around first before buying to check what is available, quality, and cost. Products of Australia are marked as such. Note that organic produce is grouped together in another section, between the meat and deli sections. This section gets very crowded, even with rather wide aisles. A lot of residents shop here, so you have to dodge rolling carts, too. A word of advice: It's fine to gawk, but don't stop dead in your tracks. Step aside so others may pass. There are lots of places to sit throughout, and tables inside and out. While there is a food court with international options, there are also a bunch of food stands and restaurants peppered about. I was there on a Sunday afternoon and there was live music. Restrooms are never far away, as are ATMs. The food court isn't huge but there is such a diversity of options. Be careful around this section, which also includes the meat market, and organic and deli sections: The floor slopes slightly, just enough to possibly trip on if your legs aren't so good. If you go toward closing time, places might be out of some stuff but some may also slash prices on what is left. Lots of parking, a tram stop a few steps away, and the CitySightseeing Melbourne bus stops there as part of the City Tour. read more

What an awesome place for a weekly shopping adventure. We took an excursion tour bus from the cruise ship to the Market with a very informative driver who dazzled us with the history of Melbourne, Australia, how the city came to be (they actually paid people to immigrate) so there are large communities of Greeks, Chinese, and Indians as in Bangladesh. Over the last 40-50 years a number of Vietnamese have been welcomed to the country. A beautiful blend of people living in apparent harmony. First of all, the city of Melbourne was fastidiously clean. No trash littered on the streets or allyways, no people puffing away on cigarettes, no homeless people laying on benches or in parks....everything from schools, colleges, churches and this giant Queen Victoria Market are immaculate. After our tour bus drive to the "open air" market we wander thru a Bazaar style, covered, for lack of a better explanation Airport hanger, filler with vendors eager to sell you some trinket or souvenir you've always wanted but didn't know it. Leather goods, some better quality than others. Knitwear, some better quality than other (I bought into one of these for my Daughter in Law). Things for everyone in the family, but the best part of the market was the "other side" of the street. First stop was the American Donut Bus. Little White Bus with windows so you can watch the happy team kneading dough, frying dough, tossing fried dough in sugar and somewhere in the mystery of the donut they are filled with raspberry filling. Five of these babies for six dollars...such a deal! Don't care much for donuts but omg these rival the best I've ever had. Piping hot you can barely hold one but you will just because they smell heavenly and taste even better....did I mention I got sticky raspberry sauce all over the front of my shir? Thank you Tide Pen! Next we walked into the fruit and vegetable stands...so fresh and fragrant. Stalls of everything from artichokes to zucchini. Beautiful mangos, Friend bought two and they sliced it for us, dramatically red Dragon fruit, Moon Drop grapes, fennel, like a Whole Foods on steroids and way cheaper. Continuing to walk through as we were following our noses, we found the butcher shops, the deli shop (1 pound of mortadella please), the bakery (1 seeded bagette please) and into the covered alleyway set with communal high tables and stools where people could purchase beer, wine, several sodas, bubble water and Cruve. So sit we did and enjoyed our purchases and the music. At one end of the area there was a pizza guy making individual margarita pizzas in a gorgeous pizza oven and a line 10 deep for the pleasure of purchasing one. At the other end there was a Greek vendor making a cheese and potato dish. The visit to this giant market was quite memorable. If I had more time in Melbourne I'd do it again. I now know why the Q.V. market is so popular! It's amazing!! If you've been to Vancouver's Granville Island or Seattle's Pike Place Market, then you're going to be surprised by Q.V. market. ***Before you go, make sure it's open!!*** We started our walk going up and down the rows of people selling random Australian souvenirs. Leather jackets, UGGS, toys, animal hides, etc.. You'll then stop and smell the food of a few eateries in the area enticing you to grab a bite. Eventually all the souvenirs shops turn into a vegetable and fruit market. Everything at a very reasonable price for market veggies and fruits. The stall sellers shout like auctioneers the price of goods. You walk across the street to the covered food court. With a nice selection of delicious cooked goods ready for you to eat. Walk through the sliding doors to the building next door and you're in the meat and fish market. Local and unique meats and seafood a wait for you to buy. They got kangaroo, rabbit and emu. Fish that I've never seen on west coast. Oysters shelled and ready to consume right on the spot. And lobster the size of my forearm. As you keep walking you'll end up in the delicatessen area. Unique chocolate stalls, coffee and tea stalls and fresh pastries and sandwiches galore! You'll get caught up in all the sights and smells around you that you won't know where to start. Honestly it doesn't matter, TRY EVERYTHING! You'll be surprised exploring the large market. Take it all in and enjoy it! Strolling through here was fun especially the Night Market. Easy to get to and if you are lucky enough to be in Melbourne you are lucky enough. There are different sections of the market one of which is your standard swap meet type of items and area. Then things get good. There is an organic section with fresh and interesting produce. Step inside the market building and you are in a Blockade of specialty vendors and a food court. Then there is a separate area that is one part meat and one part fresh seafood. Have your camera ready for a few hours of selfie ops. The surrounding area also has more places to eat, more alleyways to explore, more art and lots of seating. Since I won't have any new places to write for awhile, I've decide to write some long due ones. I really LOVE Queen Victoria Market. It was everything that I wanted from the Paddy's Markey in Sydney. Although I was only able to come here for half the day, I thought Queen Victoria Market was wonderful. It had everything. A lot of options and it was spacious and it had EVERYTHING. They had clothing, food, snacks, drinks, and fresh cheese, vegetables, fruits, seafood, and poultry. It is the ultimate market if you want anything. I just like the vibes her. Personally, I love a large market that has everything and the whole outside vibes always makes me think it's more fresh(and it is). I think Queen Victoria Market is a must for all tourists but even if you're not a tourist, I would definitely come as a local. Stay safe and stay healthy everybody. read more

The Queen Victoria Market is almost indescribably great, for so many reasons. Its sheer size is at first intimidating to the first-time visitor, but after a while you start to enjoy the energy and buzz of the marketplace. We spent a long time walking through the clothing and trinkets building, where the number of shops selling similar goods results in competitive prices for just about everything. From time to time, over the course of the few hours we were there, we would wander over to one of the food buildings a grab a snack, such as a Lamington, some cheese, or some crusty fresh breads. We especially enjoyed going on a hunt for the best mandarin orange in the fruit and vegetable building, as we went from stall to stall buying a single orange from each of them - though in the end we didn't quite find ones as good as what we had gotten from Woolworth's the prior evening. We came away from the market feeling absolutely stuffed and satisfied and carrying a handful of stuff that we didn't really need, but I suppose that's what's going to happen when you come to places like this - though I don't recall anything quite like this in any of my other travels. It's definitely not a place to be missed during a trip to Melbourne. My only regret is that the timing of our stay did not allow for a visit to the night market - another time, for certain. read more

We decided to check out Queen Victoria Night Market after a full day of tennis watching. The night market is on every Wednesday (5:00pm to 10:00pm) and it's a massive market of food stalls, shops, music and more. We dropped in around 7:30pm and the place was incredibly busy. Like BUSY. Be prepared to wait at the popular food stalls. We walked around and checked out all the spots. I was surprised to see a few places like Sri Lankan (one stall even had lamprais!). We ended up trying out four spots. Arancini Siciliani - 4x Arancini ($10.00 AUD) - we got two meaty bolognese peas & mozzarella and two sundried tomato, pesto & feta. The bolognese came out hot and cheesy. sundried tomato wasn't warm but it was tasty. 3 stars. The arancini were decent. The Waffle Club - Mango deluxe ($9.00 AUD) - fresh mango, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, almond flakes and Belgian dark chocolate. The waffle was perfect. Crunchy on the outside but super fluffy on the inside. The dark chocolate was good but the rest was pretty unmemorable. Mangoes weren't the sweetest. Overpriced for what you get. Just get the naked waffle ($4.00 AUD) instead. 3.5 stars. Nepal Dining Room - Chicken sekuwa ($15.00 AUD) - grilled chicken thigh fillet marinated with garlic, ginger, coriander and lime. Served with salad, tomato sesame chutney and chamre rice. The rice didn't taste anything like the description (supposedly turmeric and cumin seed). Salad was also pretty boring and needed a dressing. Chicken was tender but needed more seasoning. 3 stars. The Black Sheep The line was absolutely massive when we first walked by. Luckily, when we came back an hour or so later, the line was more reasonable. The spits they have on display of chicken, pork and lamb smelled and looked amazing. It'll be easy to spot; just look for the huge crowd. - Pulled lamb souvlaki ($14.00 AUD) - premium local spring lamb shoulder slowly spit roasted with leafy greens, tomato, onion, tzatziki and fresh lemon wrapped in a pita bread. The lamb was brilliant; perfectly cooked and well seasoned. Pita was fresh. The vegetables and greens balanced the souvlaki out. 4.5 stars. My favourite out of everything we ordered. Worth checking out the Queen Victoria Night Market but be prepared for the crowds. read more
