First of all, the main pool is simply not deep enough at either end. The first few feet of your…read morelength will be awkward as it's hard to avoid your feet touching the bottom. Second of all it is FAR too crowded. There's no control given to the amount of people in the water. No one can really use this pool to train because you are constantly avoiding other swimmers. I have an arm span of almost 6 feet, and when I am trying my hardest to do full, wide strokes it's virtually impossible when there are other people passing by. Even in the slow and fast lanes there's not enough space. Third, it's mainly old people, and they are not there to swim. They are there to gossip and very slowly walk through the water while moving their arms a little bit. This is not swimming! And for people who are there to properly train it's very, very annoying. The changing rooms are always filled with parents who cannot allow their children to do anything for themselves. When I step out of the pool and into the shower rooms it is often filled with fully-clothed parents who are bathing their children. This is a very odd practice and evidence of society's inability to let children use their own judgement and faculties and sheltering them as much as possible. There is a spa and steam room, but I have never used them. The changing rooms are old and aged and need revamping.

For some reason it's always relatively quiet and if it's not there's the odd kid and parent combo but purely learning the basics of swimming with arm bands, apart from that there's a couple of old women in the slow lane and basically the rest is all yours. Private showers are a rarity, especially if you've just learned it's not ok to have "proper" showers when you're at swimming and shaving your arm pits is pretty much frowned upon... Unless you have your own private shower that is!

The pool is 25 metres in length and is wide enough to permanently have 4 lanes cordoned off for lane swimming and beginners. Sometimes these lanes are out of bounds for the many swimming classes available here, or for aqua aerobics. The changing area is unisex and there are 3 large family changing cubicles, which I find very useful when I visit with my daughter. The pool is only deep in the middle which means when you do a length you start in shallow water and end in it. I find this quite nice and it makes it easier to take a rest between lengths if, like me, you are unfit! There is a small diving area in the middle where the water is deep but there are no diving boards. I do find the water can be quite cold in this pool compared to others in Edinburgh but that is a minor gripe. I also find the staff can be a little offhand and not always particularly helpful. The pool can also get very crowded and I have seen some particularly bad behaviour go unchecked by the attendants which is offputting for the majority. These are minor points however I would suggest trying to use this pool at offpeak times if you just want a nice swim in peace.
