I contacted QK Dogs seeking help with my German shepherd and they advised me they would like to meet her and had us come to a class with about 25 other dogs and owners. i advised them my dog was reactive to people and other dogs and they assured me there would be no issue and if there was they would handle her if needed. We signed up for the course and drove over 2 hours to get there. On arrival to the class, my dog barked and the owner of QK, Jennifer, said we have a volunteer And asked if she could handle my dog. I agreed and when she walked over my dog barked again at her and she refused to handle her throughout the duration of the rest of the few hour class. After a couple of hours one of the workers, Carlos, offered to handle Her and was extremely helpful even though my dog was reactive with him as well. Throughout The class, the owner, Jennifer, made comments about my dog that were unsettling such as she should not be a family pet. At the end of the class, Jennifer said that we should give up our dog because she is untrainable. Her comment was not taken lightly because she supposedly has about 25 years in training dogs and said she can't and blatantly refused to even attempt to train a 6 month old German shepherd. We left in tears thinking hope was lost for our puppy that we had zero luck with. We have since been to training at pro k9 center in French town nj and are blown away with the progress our pup has made. this is not an advertisement for pro k9 center But I cannot stress enough that the owner of QK Dogs does not seem fit to work with challenging dogs Or in my opinion any dogs for that matter if she just makes nasty comments during classes and training for a chuckle at the expense of someone coming there seeking serious help. If you want to teach your dog to sit and forcefully have it do Obstacles this is the place to be. As the one positive note, the trainer Carlos deserves praise as he assured us that she was trainable and to not give up hope. read more

PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING QK KENNELS! This is long but it is WORTH the read. As the owner of a dog I see as my family, I am here to warn all dog parents that if you are considering the Vita Plan (daycare) option at QK Kennels please read this thoroughly and do NOT take your dogs here. On April 1st of this year, I enrolled my 2-year-old German Shepherd at QK for the Vita Plena program to hopefully gain more socialization with other dogs as well as have this time used as an outlet for him to let off some energy for the day. His first day went great, so I thought. So of course, I continued sending my dog to daycare at QK once a week. I did this for a month and a half. After his second visit, I noticed a change in my dog. Every time I picked my dog up from daycare I would ask the staff how his day went, never did they give me much detail at all. On his third day at QK, when he got to my car he was very antsy in the car which he never is and once we got home he drank three full bowls of water immediately with no resting in between. This indicated to me that he had no water at any recent point in his visit. Upon his next visit, I was informed that the staff used an electric bark collar on my dog without asking me first which is a very large red flag for me. When I tried to place his collar on him after this, he was crying and flailing his head around to avoid any collar being placed on his neck which he has NEVER done before. This raised a lot of concern for me. On his next visit, I noticed he was very nervous at drop-off, more nervous than normal. There was a specific woman in the facility that he clearly was more timid around, unfortunately, this was the woman he was with every day. The following visit when I went to drop him off, he was completely normal walking into the facility but the moment he saw the woman he was with every visit, he hid to my side, cowered down, and put his ears back. This was my last straw. I finally confronted the staff (the CEO of the company) who not only gave no mind to my concerns, but she was extremely dismissive. I then asked to speak to the owner, Jennifer. Jennifer started this phone call out with so much kindness and what I believed to be genuine concern. As the phone call continued, she did everything she could to place the blame on me. She told me that my dog is 'too smart for his own good' because of an incident where he got out of his harness at daycare, but the staff failed to inform me of it from the many times I asked how his days went. She also informed me that 'her trainers and staff are too small for a dog of his size' and they are too intimidated to work on one with him, which is why he was in the kennel where he was barking and then placed with an electric bark collar. My dog is a 97-pound Shepherd, which they knew when taking him into this facility, so if the size of him was a concern then that should have been stated instead of taking my payment daily for a service they were unable to provide due to his 'size'. Jennifer then told me that he was 'scared of his staff' due to the way they enforce the rules vs how I, his owner, enforce the rules. I didn't get much explanation on this specific topic but overall it was a red flag. No dog should be terrified of any staff at a daycare facility or any facility for that matter. After a long phone call of placing blame on me as the owner and my dog due to his size and intelligence, she then finished up the phone call by saying "So you're not a hater anymore, you won't write a bad review?" Which clearly is the reason she called in the first place, to try and protect herself from a bad review. I'd like to end this by saying that my Shepherd is an extremely well-behaved, kind, gentle dog. He spends almost all of his time around my frail, 110-pound, 80-year-old Grandmother who lives with us both. He has played with children as young as the age of 1. He has been in public around all ages, sizes, and even other dogs. Never have I had an issue with aggression or any signs of being unable to handle or socialize due to size. He is energetic, yes, but he is nowhere near the dog this woman tried to portray him to be. She was trying to find excuses for the harmful mistreatment of my dog and the inexcusable actions of her staff. I hope no other dog owner ever has to see the fear in their dog the way I did in mine when dropping him off at QK. I can't imagine what happens behind closed doors at this facility. I am so glad that I went with my gut and took my dog out of QK Kennels. Please save your pet from the traumatizing experience and take them elsewhere. read more

My puppy is an Akita, a breed known for loyalty, dignity...and stubbornness beyond. True to form, my pup is super bright, a quick study and definitely an independent thinker. I needed some help to teach her some manners for all the time, not just when she felt like It... and most of all, get her to accept her crate as a "den" and not "punishment hell". I'm so relieved to report that my little sprout definitely got the hang of it and then some. I think the most crucial tip was with regard to MY behavior: I needed to act like her pack leader, not her "litter mate". No one had ever described me as acting just like a puppy myself...no wonder the dog didn't respect me. Those key words burned in my brain and I encourage anyone having challenges with pupper behavior to give this some consideration: who does your dog think of you as? She's still just as cuddly as before, just...without peeing in her crate. She definitely listens when I ask her to do stuff, even (gasp) off leash at the park. She's become quite the athlete :) The staff here treated her like the happy little Pikachu that she is (though she's not so little anymore!) and gave her the most thoughtful care. I had dropped my 1-year-old French Bulldog, Henry off last Saturday, Sept 15th for their 2 week-obedience training course. This cost a total of $1200.00. I had paid a deposit of $400 when dropping him off. The drop off was pleasant and easy. The grounds looked groomed and well kept. I have been in contact with Sharon, the Senior Obedience Trainer and she has been pleasant to work with. She was also very accommodating as I signed him up pretty last minute for this course. I received one picture and a couple emails with brief updates on Henrys progress, but am looking forward to seeing his training come Friday when I pick up him. I will update once I pick him up this Friday on if I think its worth the cost! read more

I am sooooooooo pleased with the results that came out of the training Chris did with my 1 1/2 year old recuse. When I brought her there she was wearing a basket muzzle and in the end Chris was giving her belly rubs. It only took 6 1 hour sessions for Chris to rehabilitate Waffle and as Chris called it she was a project. She bite him 3 times as she was not fond of me. She now can handle the things she used to attack with lunging, barking and with the full intention to bite, such as cars,people on bikes,shake boards, people jogging and yes the big thing men. I still will not let people pet her but she now walks off leash in the park near us and will come and sit by my left side when I call her. She is a different dog and boy am I happy and so is she. Chris taught me as much as he taught Waffle and I went home with her and worked on the new training very week and it paid off. I would had never had the confidence to take Waffle out as she did try and bite people nor would Waffle have the confidence to be walked in a crowd at a festival and swim in the Sound surrounded by men,women and children. He points, steady to point, walks at my heel OFF COLAR the list goes on! He was a bully when I dropped him off and is nothing but a gentlemen now. This should really be 10 stars, not 5!! I am blown away with the results after a 4 1/2 week stay training our 1 year old Golden Retriever!! This entire experience started with a conversation in a park in Boston with the owner of another retriever that I was really impressed with. The owner told me that about 10 years ago they had sent their dog to this place call "Quinebaug" and it was game changer for them. So I continued my walk getting pulled and yanked all over the place by my 75 pound Golden, named Hamachi who I just couldn't seem to control. When I got home, I logged on to the computer, all the while, Hamachi was barking at me showing all sorts of bad behavior ugg, no respect. After a few searches I found Quinebaug Kennels and read every single page, watched all the videos, read about the owner, Jen Broome and thought I have to give this a try, I have nothing to lose. So I signed up for a 6 week deal, 2 weeks on leash, 2 weeks off leash, 2 weeks bird hunting....that was the plan. We showed up on Aug 3rd to an absolutely gorgeous facility, and I mean gorgeous. The main facility looked and felt more like some sort of facility for humans, not dogs! It was so clean, the grounds had incredible flower beds, just everything was top notch. The staff were in uniforms very professional, they were all very happy to see my dog (as if they already knew him!) and seemed to be enjoying their work....on a Saturday no less. I mention this because as a small business owner myself, it was obvious the pride Jen has with her business and it showed in all aspects, start to finish, top to bottom. We didn't really have huge expectations at drop off, because I can tell you this boy exhibited every bad behavior in the book...and it turns out we were really the ones who were propagating much of his bad behavior!! Hamachi couldn't get into a car, would bite his leash at the end of walks, would not come when called at the dog park or anywhere for that matter, unless you had a T-bone in your pocket, dug up our gardens, would nip and bite at night between the hours of 6-10, would tug/pull you any chance he got on the leash...you get the picture, despite all of our our efforts to use emotion, choke collars, treats, dog classes at the local pet store, reading books, etc....nothing was really working well, and he was getting stronger and it was just not that much fun having him around. Fast forward to today September 6th when we scheduled our 2 hour pick up lesson, all I can say is WOW!! (btw we picked up a week early because my dog was all show, just not an ounce of hunting genetics from what Jen saw in training) Anyway, Jen and one of her head trainers, Chris spent about an hour going over all sorts of topics related to dog behavior/psychology and how we humans should adjust our way of thinking to become better leaders (and I am talking about a dog pack leader) if we want to have a better relationship with our dog(s). Jen went off to get Hamchi from the kennel and the plan was for us to observe her handle Hamachi in the obstacle course....I couldn't believe it. Hamachi healed, stopped when she stopped, jumped right up into a mock flatbed pick-up, went up and over a steep plank, jumped right up on barrels, stayed put when told, basically he did everything he was asked to do, he even did it off leash, a far cry from the maniac I dropped off 4+ weeks earlier!! We then joined Jen and we did hands-on training for about an hour with the wonder lead, and with the e-collar overlay which is a little tough to get use to, but the methodology is something the dogs really understand and they respond to it well. Hamachi was wagging his tail, he seemed calm and well adjusted assuming his new role as an obedient dog. My wife and I were a little worried that once we had him back home, all the bad stuff would re-emerge....and we will see, but I don't think that is going to happen as long as we continue to "step-up" as Jen says, and show our dog that we are the pack leader, not the other way around as we were doing. I just got back from my first walk with him....what a fun walk!! I was BARELY using the lead, I did use the e-collar a bit to promote the right kind of behavior but he seemed happy as a clam, to be relieved of his duties as the Alpha Dog, now letting me do all the hard work! The best part of the walk was watching all the other dog owners get yanked all over the place and to know those days are behind us!! Thank you to all the staff at QB, keep up the GREAT work! Our family brought home our first German Shepherd in September, 2019. I grew up with dogs-my kids grew up with dogs, but none could prepare us for a male GSD. We tried another school (once/week for one hour, food-driven) but that wasn't helping. It got to a point where I was afraid to walk him because it would take all of my strength to hold him back from trying to run up to any person, deer, and even a fisher(!) that we encountered during our walks. I would cry for him, convinced that this sweet dog was going to end up a rescue dog because WE lacked the time and skill to train him properly. And then someone told me about Quinebaug Kennels. Wow. We signed Max up for the four-week training and I can't tell you the difference. Amazing. Jennifer, Chris, and the training team worked so hard and turned him around. They taught us what we needed to change- from the simple to the more difficult. He listens, he stops, he loves meeting new people. I can walk down the street with him and stop to chat with a neighbor and he stays. Is he perfect? Nahhhh- he still tries to feel his oats, but it's up to us to remind him that we're in control. We also wanted to keep him socialized with other people and dogs; it goes without saying that it's a challenging goal in 2020. We decided to put him in daycare one day/week at Quinebaug. He LOVES it. A couple weeks ago the kennel staff was in the store when I dropped him off. As soon as he saw them he went into full-on happy puppy mode and quite literally bounced over to them! Tail wagging, wiggling, greeting each one as each one of them greeted him with happiness, nicknames, and overall sweetness. OH! And the best part of all- he sleeps so well that night and the next morning! I want to thank everyone at QK from the bottom of my heart. I wish I could give Quinebaug Kennels a 5 star, but, I sent my dog Doc here for a 5 week duck training course late spring 2014. They taught him to place, sit, heel, and upland hunt retrieve from the ground. They didn't work with Doc on any pond duck retrieves. The trainer had Doc in the water 1 time, and told me he could not get Doc out of the water, the trainer had to use lvl 4 high on Doc's E-collar to finally get Doc out of the water. I paid almost $3,000.00 including boarding and E-collar fees. Doc isn't any closer to retrieving from the water than he was the day I dropped him off. Which was my main concern from day 1. I Emailed Jen the owner, she invited me in for a Doc eval, within the first minute Jen diagnosed his problem as, he didn't respect me. This was due to him jumping out of my new van before I commanded him to jump. I had him trained for my truck, but didn't work with him in my new van at that time. He also was very nervous, and after a 1hr 20min ride, needed to relieve himself, which he did on the walk to the outside pen. We took Doc up to their outside pen and Doc followed every order I gave him, including placing and sitting in place for over 30 minutes, while I was told over and over that I didn't work enough with him when I got him home, so he forgot everything they taught him in that 5 weeks. Jen ran some drills with him for about 5 minutes then vanished and I never seen her again. I was there for well over an hour. I work with him at least 2 times a week. The things that QK taught him, he still remembers and does very well. They did a great job training him on the commands that worked on. He sits where I place him. He waits for me to release him to fetch. He sits at my left side while I skeet shoot without flinching or moving, and when I have a hidden friend toss a frozen bird he retrieves it on my command. He comes. He heels. But, once he hits the water, it's swim time. Swim time because he was never duck trained in the 5 week duck training course. It took me a long time to write a review, at first I was just going to chalk it up as another burn. But with Duck season upon us, and Doc not able to do what I spent upwards of $3,000.00 to teach him. I am very irritated. Add to that, since my complaint and visit, not 1 email from QK to see how things are with Doc. I sent my crazy GSP to the Gun Dog training program on July 1st, and picked her up today. Head gundog trainer Jordan Wells is amazing. We sent a wild 14 month old to him, and less than 6 weeks later we got back a well mannered obedient dog. Jordan spent two hours with us at pick up showing us how to continue the training, and how to handle her. He and his awesome assistant Joe Lussier put out a couple of birds in the woods behind the kennels and let us see her working. I cannot believe what they accomplished. Jordan clearly explained everything, demonstrated, and then had my wife and me do each thing. The facility is beautiful and clean, and the grounds have all kinds of cover for training bird dogs. The people that work there, Darcy, Jan, and Patricia, to name a few, were so nice to us, and took great care of our pup. She came back looking better than when we left her. Perfectly trimmed nails, and a nice bath (thanks Darcy!). I will have no problem bringing my girl back in the future. read more

TERRIBLE!!! DOES NOT TREAT ALL DOGS EQUALLY!! I am a person who possess both managerial and Vet. Tech. experience working at a small Veterinary Hospital; in my many years of providing quality care & customer service to our clients I assumed that I found a similar quality dog-training/boarding facility when I researched & ultimately chose Q.K. I wanted to believe that Q.K. was a good place. I was WRONG! Q. K. charged us a lot of money when services were not rendered! We gave Q.K. a 7month old Ridgeback puppy! The trainer said many bad things about our puppy, some breed specific which were totally off/wrong but most alarming she claimed that she was unable to teach him anything ? Had to pick up my dog early bc he got sick from eating something but that is NOT what alarmed us; THIS IS... * I was given a verbal guarantee that my puppy could be training; I said, 6 wks, they said, oh, no, more like 4. It was changed to longer yet we had to pick our dog up earlier. Our puppy learned NOTHING!!! yet I was still charged for training???? * When we picked our puppy up (2 wks early) he was EMACIATED! * Our dog was underfed and not treated nicely. They claim that they maintain open lines of communication & send pictures of your dog but this did not happen throughout our experience with Q.K. * We were told that the trainer simply couldn't train him. * In the 2.5 wks he was there, the trainer informed me (only after I had to ask) that she did not train our dog to do anything/work on anything. It sounds to me like the owner certainly is qualified & widely considered to be a trained professional in all that she does & IS involved with/in. However, in her absense, you just have a staff that could communicate more effectively & could use some customer service skills as we were not satisfied with the treatment that was bestowed upon us. Q.K. is only a glorified boarding & Gun-dog training facility. The doggie-boot camp (esp. the limited methods/practices used in their training) is not designed for all dogs nor a good experience to be endured by all dogs. It goes without saying that a good/EXPERIENCED trainer should utilize a variety of different training methods/techniques before assuming that a dog is considered to be "untrainable". BE WARE of sending your much loved & cared for dog to Quinebaug Kennels! All the reviews sound wonderful but they are dated and prob. written by close friends and a few decent cases. Shame on Q.K. to assume that they are able to efficiently train ALL dogs who are registered in their program. read more

Our black lab Buddy stayed at Q.K. for a week and he came home to us as happy as could be. Buddy had a tender back leg when we dropped him off and the staff at Q.K.'s took excellent care of him. We visited the kennel prior and it was very clean and it was clear the staff love their work. We feel the staff got to know Buddy well as he has a great personality. Only regret is he was a little lame when we dropped him off, otherwise we would have had Jennifer run him on a few pigeons to keep Buddy active. We trusted Q.K. to care of our boy and we give them 5 stars!!!! read more

This place is the best gift you can give your disobedient (or obedient) dog and the family that owns it. This kennel is not only clean and staffed with the nicest most professional folks around - when it comes to training - they mean business! They have helped to transform our difficult canine into a respectable family member and taught us how to manage his poor behavior. He returned from dog boot camp cooking a 5 course meal and making our beds. I have personally witnessed the love and passion they put into training and caring for our challenging (now delightful) dog.
