We have been there four times now over the last year since our friends turned us on to this place a year ago. I come from an Italian family background of great cooks and recipes and I have to say this place truly fulfills my cravings for true Italian dishes. The linguine and white clam sauce is to die for! Perfect every time I've ordered it. The calamari has always been cooked to perfection and my wife says she can't get enough of the stuffed mushrooms. We took our daughter, who is visiting from Colorado, for the first time last night and she claimed the ziti plate she ordered was incredibly good. The staff is always very friendly and our service has always been excellent. The only reason we don't eat there more often is because it's a very long drive from our home and they don't have the linguine and clams at the Pass Christian location, (which is much closer to our home), yet, but I was promised last night it was coming. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts to visit on a Sunday (they're closed!), I finally made it on a Tuesday evening. I was promptly greeted and seated by the friendly host right as they opened at 5 p.m. Our waitress was welcoming and took our appetizer order right after our drinks. We were debating between the mozzarella sticks and calamari, and she recommended the trio, which included both, plus fried zucchini - a great suggestion! Soon after our appetizer arrived, the owner and chef came to our table to introduce himself and check on our food. It was a nice, personal touch that you don't see very often. While the service was a little on the slower side, it was clear that the small but mighty staff was attentive and making their rounds to all the tables. For our main course, we ordered the chicken parmesan, which was a generous portion, easily shareable for two, and came with a side salad. It was yummy. This restaurant has a certain charm with its combination of Southern hospitality and Italian cuisine. I would recommend it based on my experience. They also have some weekly specials (unsure for how long) : -Wednesday Family Night: Large 3-topping pizza for $11.99 -Thursday Date Night: The $5 corkage fee for BYOB is waived, and they offer a "share a bowl" upgrade for $5.99 (usually $9.99), which gives you two servings of protein instead of one. The lasagna and spaghetti & meatballs seem tacked on the menu like an afterthought. I didn't see any menu items that I can't get anywhere else. Stiff competition in this category - there are some very good Italian restaurants in Slidell. That said, Joe's definitely has the potential to be a solid 4-stars. From what we observed, there appeared to be only two employees trying to do everything--seat guests, take orders, wait tables, and manage other responsibilities. The restaurant seemed clearly understaffed, and while those employees appeared to be doing the best they could, there was very little communication or engagement with customers. It took 10 minutes just to be acknowledged and seated despite no one waiting, followed by another 10 minutes before a table was ready. Once seated, it took another 5-6 minutes to receive water, and after that we simply sat waiting, and waiting, and waiting. We noticed other customers experiencing similar delays, and after receiving little attention or explanation, we decided to leave. No one even came over to ask why. Hopefully this was just an off day for Mangiamo, because good food alone is not enough. Customer service, communication, and proper staffing matter. A simple acknowledgment or an honest explanation goes a long way. Management should ensure they have the resources and oversight necessary to provide the experience customers expect, because first impressions and service are every bit as important as the food.

Using ham for the dish did it the most disservice. Ham doesn't have enough fat content to add flavor to the dish. They also did not use enough aged cheese, instead, they used heavy cream to compensate for it. A lot of restaurants do this to cut down on costs, but it truly affects the quality of the dish. Without enough cheese, the flavor was not deep enough. However, the cream added plenty of richness. We tried the Supreme Pizza. It was good! The crust was perfect, and it was loaded with toppings and mozzerella cheese. A no frills standard pizza!
