I always speak to the Jaspal Ghandi about the specials and what is good and don't remember getting a bum steer. I wanted to try it here because it looks great at night driving past and I love Indian food, so I didn't think I could go wrong. So glad we tried this and you must too. It's beautiful and spacious inside, and one thing it has that other Indian restaurants don't, is nice big tables. We were seated promptly (albeit in hard and a bit uncomfortable chairs) and the manager/owner(?) told us the specials and explained the entrees. Everything sounded delicious. I ordered the Smashed Samosa for starters and it was not only excellent in taste, but one of the most gorgeously presented dishes I've had. It was really good, although a tiny bit on the hot side. For main, I had the Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan, and shared rice. Everything came out so beautifully presented. The flavours were so good, and the actual dishes themselves were great and different to other Indian restaurants. You actually eat out of the dish the main comes in, rather than dishing it out onto plates. The only minor things I wasn't a fan of, was that the chicken was on the bone rather than boneless pieces, but it was easy to eat, and tasted so dang good! It could have done with a little more sauce, as there didn't seem enough for the dish plus naan, but really, this is just nitpicking. Overall ... I would HIGHLY recommend trying Toddy. The service was quick and friendly, and the food aesthetically and palatally pleasing. It's well priced and a lot of parking outside. Give this a go NOW if you like Indian food with a twist.

Ventured here on recommendation from one of my guys who frequents the area for Indian groceries... apparently they all go there for the same thing.... groceries and BIRYANI!!! Luckily a couple was leaving as we entered.. first observation ... we were the only foreigners in the joint.. good sign was getting my hopes up even higher... Second observation looked around and behold 5 of 7 tables were eating biryani! Hopes got even higher!! Looked through the extensive menu found what I needed and ordered the hyderabadi lamb biryani, chicken korma and a garlic naan. Anyhooooo on comes the biryani .. first glance I was praying please let the rice be dry and fluffy ... and the biryani gods were listening... smelt the rice and it had the spices I soooo missed from my previous fav curry joint... .. then came the first taste.... BAM!!! I was almost in tears... It was it that taste that was it! The lamb was soft and cooked through without a stench. The spice was HOT but not extreme! They supplied a side of gravy ... which I added a bit to it and another BAM!! I was like a fat kid who had just discovered something goood!! (btw despite all my eating I'm not fat) The dal curry gravy gave it a diff taste which I'd not had before... but it was goooood! oops reminiscing too much... until next time happy eating y'all!! Oh the garlic naan was fantastic! Not greasy and cane served hot. crusty bits on outside with soft centre.. perfect! Had some herbs on top as well. Could've had that by itself. The actual restaurant itself doesn't look like much from the outside, with pretty basic décor inside, and it would be very easy to walk straight past it. However, what the restaurant lacks in aesthetics, they definitely make up for it with the quality and standard of food! The Pani Puri as a starter was delicious... the wafer-like water balls with the condiments was a lovely light way to start the meal. The Chicken 65 was amazing - the menu definitely doesn't do it justice, as it was full of flavour. Absolutely worth trying... as is the Goat Biryani, and Rocket Naan. The food here all seems really fresh, and very reasonably priced. It's a shame I don't live closer, as would definitely be visiting again!

Madras Banyan Tree (or the MBT brand) has been in operation since 2002. At the moment, there are 2…read morerestaurants, one in the CBD and one in Glen Huntly, which is the one I visited. There is a Clayton restaurant in the pipeline which will be opening soon. Having read a bit about the history of this brand, my expectations were rather high about the place. We walked in a Sunday evening and the place was pretty empty to our surprise. The staff acknowledged us immediately and seated us. Bought out both the drinks and food menu soon enough. South Indian food can be a pretty vague term as it covers an entire region of India and the food varies widely between states. The food at Madras Banyan is predominantly from Tamil Nadu (especially from the Chettinad region) with a bit from other regions like Kerala and Andhra Pradesh thrown in. And while we were making our selections, a plate of pappadums arrived. Always a happy sight, especially if you have little ones with you. There was a green yoghurt chutney to accompany the pappads. Now, I have a complaint with most Indian restaurants here when they serve this green coloured chutney. How difficult is it to make a fresh mint and coriander paste and add it to the curd instead of giving this obviously artificially coloured chutney. For drinks, I decided to go for a salt lassi. I was hoping it would be the South Indian style lassi which I absolutely adore. And it didn't disappoint; full of flavour and done exactly how I enjoy it. A must try during this season. The hubby decided to stick with a glass of his favourite Glenfiddich. For starters, we decided to sample a traditional Chettinad favourite - Kola Urundai (deep fried spiced lamb mince dumplings). The flavour was good but it was fried a tad bit extra that the dumplings lost all its succulence and was a little hard. And they weren't a pretty sight either! My son has become a huge Uttappam fan and so he went for his favourite type; the Tomato Onion Uttappam (rice pancakes topped with tomatoes and onions). The Uttappam came with an assortment of chutneys. The entire combo was just average; the sambhar and onion chutney was good though. Though we wanted to try the traditional goat biryani, it was not available so settled for the Murgh dum biryani. Again, an average dish. The meat was cooked well and the rice was flavourful from the medley of spices but still there was that oomph factor lacking. The next 2 items we ordered were the Malabar parotta (a flaky Indian flatbread from Kerala) and aatirachi kozhambu (lamb curry cooked in traditional Chettinad style). The parotta was no good; I am doubtful it came out of the frozen section of some supermarket. The lamb curry was good, probably the best thing that we had that day. The flavours were rich and deep but wish there were more pieces for the cost. Overall, a very average experience. I don't think I will really visit this place again though.
