Both are hard forms but goju uses short motions versus shoto-kan long motions. I have studied the art of shoto-kan for over 55 years along with aikido and judo, even though I am now retired. I was one of the top ten fighters in Hawaii back in the early 70's, owned Port Orchard and Northwest shoto-kan back in the 80's & 90's before moving to Nevada. I have seen many imitations of the art by people whose only objective is money by charging out rageous fees, minimal class time, etc. My classes lasted 5 or more hours every night for adults, two hours for kids, my black belts were required to do no less then 500 kicks, punches, attacks, etc. We trained the same as I did in Japan and Hawaii no less. Softness was not a requirement in my dojo. I trained with the best in Japan Karate Shoto-kan Assoc under, sensei's Asai, Nakayama, Enoeda, Kanazawa, Funakoshi, and more instructors. I also Trained for more than 5 years in Japan. I held the rank of 5th dan for over 25 years and reconnected with Kanazawa sensei back in Hawaii under my uncle 9th dan Shihan Sueo Nishimura, chief instructor for Hawaii Shoto-kan International Federation owned by 10th dan Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa. There are to many fake instructors and others teaching the art today so one must be careful on choosing a dojo to learn in. Research is the key to getting a good dojo to practice and learn. Looking at the pictures a shoto-kan practioner one would never use kung-fu style stances for fighting; fight with an open hand (very dangerous); keep weight on back leg; not practice in the traditional gi; use the wrong patch as symbol of art, (shoto-kan is the tiger-nothing less, Standing Fist belongs to the art of Goju); must train in white gi no other color, not allowed to work out in t-shirts, short, jeans, shoes, etc.; must practice the dojo kun, oath of Shoto-Kan Karate, and must respect all. You pay a small fee and that gives you 2 lessons and a test. It gives you a feel for what their instruction is like and the test gives them an idea of whether you will be a good student (i.e. are you going to practice, etc). Mr. Jordan was a great teacher throughout the introductory sessions, and I enjoyed myself so much that I signed up. I am now signed up for the school and am excited to begin working towards my first belt. The school has a student manual which has some great information in it. I am still reading through it. I love that it makes it clear which skills you need to perform well in order to progress. While COVID has posed some challenges, AKEA has adopted their group classes to meet the state requirements. I am looking forward to going to my first group lesson next week.

This alone is a benefit because it is less harsh on my skin and I don't feel itchy all the time. Plus the chlorine smell isn't in everything we bring home. BTAC also has space and flexibility. You aren't dodging people or waiting in line for the mass of people to let you in. Our suggestions are taken seriously instead of the 'Its not my job' answers I always got at the Y. They have kids programs and events, and loaner rackets and goggles for anyone in need. The lifeguards are super nice! And help swimmers outside of class when they are around. I will say, the club does need some updating in the locker rooms, and some other areas, but I'm happy with our experience so far.

I was surprisingly sent here for an independent medical examination by Washington L&I, even though it is an acupuncture clinic. The physician, Dr. Darin Davidson was professional and appeared to be receptive of what I had to say about my condition. All other aspects of the visit however, were another story... I had already been made to feel very unwelcome by the time I reached the exam room. The receptionist was extremely cold, did not explain anything to myself or my companion well, and sat at her desk literally staring at me while I attempted to complete personal medical questionnaires (rather than inviting me to sit in the waiting area like most offices would). When I proceeded to ask for the restroom to change my shorts, she informed me that I would be allowed to do so in the exam room. When I insisted that I would still like a restroom with a chuckle, she gave me a most irritated grimace before directing me to the correct door. During the appointment, my companion was filming the examination as the L&I instructions informed us that we could. The receptionist noticed this about five minutes into the appointment (I'm not sure why she was sitting in on the appointment--perhaps to take notes?--this was not explained to me). She jumped off of the wall where she was standing and said in a strained tone that we were not allowed to do film the appointment. I assured her that we had been told that we could by L&I a few different times, and asked my companion to pass me the paperwork so that I could check what is said. She continued, "Well, you can't film here anyway! You have to delete that right now!! There are releases and things that need to be completed! You have to make requests seven days in advance!" to which I replied, "I apologize, I was not aware." And when the look on her face did not change, I was compelled to say, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" to which there was no response from receptionist or physician, and the physician pushed onward with the appointment as if all of that awkwardness had not just occurred. I left that appointment with the most awful feeling in my belly because of how the receptionist treated us, and reacted to a small, easily handled issue. I would not send my worst enemy to this office, and I hope L&I will wise up as well!

I finally decided to go for it and researched a number of gyms online. I was attracted to Silverdale Fitness because of its classes, location and reasonable rates. I have been there for three months now and have gone from straining to bring the groceries upstairs to running up the stairs with ease. :) What I Like: *The instructors have been so helpful. I came in completely out of shape. My experience in the gym was mostly limited to high school classes ten years ago. Both Kelly (Yoga) and Deb (Step) have gone out of their way to help me in their classes. *They offer more Zumba classes than any other gym I looked at. I love Zumba and the women in the Zumba classes are so much fun! The instructors do a fantastic job. Janice and Mary have so much energy and really keep you moving. Zumba is a dance aerobics class that involves a lot of hip shaking. :) *They have excellent Step Aerobics classes. I highly recommend taking a step class from either Janice or Deb. They are both excellent instructors. *They have a number of Yoga classes. Yoga has helped my arm strength quite a bit and, now that I am more active, I appreciate stretching out my sore muscles. *The People: Their staff is 100% helpful and friendly. Also, they have an excellent clientele. I realize they have little control over who signs up for their memberships, but they coincidentally have a great group of people in their fitness classes! I was immediately welcomed in by class regulars in Zumba and Step. The classes are mostly women and every age group is represented. *10 Day Trial: The ten day trial was perfect for me. It gave me enough time to check out the classes and get comfortable with the gym before committing to a membership. What Needs Improvement: *They need more small hand weights upstairs in the aerobics room. There are never enough two and three pound weights. That said, the little weights are pretty cheap and I'll likely buy my own eventually anyway. :) *A number of the step benches and steps need to be replaced. It's fine most of the time, but it becomes a problem when you get a large class. It's tough to use a step bench without enough traction. *Although it does not bother me, I know a number of people who love spin classes and Silverdale Fitness does not have them. However, with a Silverdale Fitness membership, you can go to Kingston Fitness and they offer spin classes there.

Well, one room, very well kept, with some of the most delicately cared-for flowers that you might have seen recently. Some classes, clones, dried flowers, concentrates, and a small selection of edibles are of topic. The best bit, this is all homegrown, straight from them, to you, to us, that is. Probably a good 15 to 20 varieties at a couple donation levels, $8, $10, $12. The funny thing though, is that the $15 strains you'll find elsewhere look surprising similar to the $8 here. Not a single one in the house that looked anything but perfectly done. The Sensi Frost and the Jack's Cleaner were the choice picks of the day, top grade at the mid price, plus, a free gift of course, for coming in for the first time, or for a referral, or for wearing a shirt, theirs or a competitors. This place is RIGHT next to THC Care Provider in a nice little indoor courtyard, quite pleasant really. Penny is pleased to have the company right next door, and says she's glad that the medical building welcomes both of them as neighbors. The selection of edibles is limited, and for good reason. Staleness! I never buy edibles in general just because of that. I'd rather make them fresh out of the finest.
