I am a loyal 4zzz subscriber and have been for a number of years. My favourite show is Concept Warning, Fishin in the Morning with Fisherman Dan and I was lucky enough to be Dan's weather girl one Sunday morning a few months back! Dan has now moved to Tuesday mornings at 5:00am, and as a dedicated fan I set my alarm each Tuesday and drag myself out of bed to listen to his show - Johnny Cash, Frank Zappa and The Ramones regularly featuring (their music of course). There is something for everyone! The Zed's Poet Society mix it up on Tuesdays with early era rock, jazz & blues, grunge, heavy metal and punk. On Wednesday nights you can catch Dykes on Mykes Davina and Ruth (their show is a hoot) and on Thursdays tune into Bhudda and Ben - the Brown Couch Men, featuring loads of local muso's. Sunday mornings you can chill out with Knoxy and his Jazz session - this session is a seriously good hangover cure. In some way, you can thank Gough Whitlam for 4zzz. On December 8, 1975, 4zzz made it's first broadcast as the first community FM broadcaster in Australia, and 36 years on, they're still getting local music out to the local people via the air waves. Yes! 4zzz has it's home in the very uniquely painted building on Barry Parade, Fortitude Valley. 4zzz is a non for profit community radio station that promotes local Brisbane and Australian music, and does so on little funding outside of charitable donations. One of the best things I could ever tell a Brisbane local to do is subscribe to 4zzz. You're helping community radio and local music, and they provide awesome incentives to join up. Whenever they're giving away free tickets, for some mysterious reason, your chances are high at winning what's on offer. Lets leave it at that. Triple Zed are responsible for promoting a lot of local gigs through events they hold during the year, one being Dub Day Afternoon, held at the Jubilee Hotel, just up the road. A lot of gigs going on in town have ticket discounts if you're a 4zzz supporter too. 4ZZZ is Brisbane's most well known community radio station. Although I will forever mourn the loss of the annual Market Day (remember how rad they were?) they do apparently still hold them occasionally and more importantly they still deserve our support. I will admit that the programming can be a bit hit and miss - some of the announcers are complete amateur hour and I find the metal shows too hard to cope with, but that's my personal taste. It's worth it to listen to local music and news and to keep in touch with the community. Fun fact, 4ZZZ actually started the Hot 100 (now Triple J's Hottest 100 after one of 4ZZZ's announcers moved to Triple J and took the format with him) and this year the number 1 song on both was the same. My friends and I were having a conversation about the Brisbane music scene the other day and one of them shared an interesting fact; did you know that Brisbane was once as having the best music scene in the country (take THAT Sydney and Melbourne). I honestly can't recall where she got this fact from but I thought it was pretty awesome. This is why radio stations like 4zzz are so important- to share local talent with the community. You will hardly ever hear anything commercial on this station; 4zzz is very eclectic. There are shows that will focus on hip-hop, jazz, punk, gypsy, the list goes on. I should also point out that not everything presented here is local talent; the hosts will source music from all over the place. Another important thing to note is that 4zzz is run by volunteers; all those hosts and anyone keeping it running are not getting paid. To show your support, you can become a subscriber. Maybe I'm a bit biased because I've volunteered there for a few years, but 4ZZZ is a consistently great radio station. The songs are either stuff I love or completely off the wall new/weird stuff I've never heard before, and the announcers have loads of personality. Plus 4ZZZ put on great events like the raucous trivia night a few months ago, the epic Rumble Rock Wrestling, Dub Day Afternoon if you're into reggae, zine fairs, markets and car park gigs.
