This is my first Ragdoll his name is Marshmallow we adore him so much he's super sweet likes to be carried always jumping in my bed literally wakes me up at 02:00 sometimes to sleep with me. He is a big foodie as well, have to feed him separately from my other cat. My Ragdoll from Gary was diagnosed with a neurological condition in 2021 which manifests as nystagmus. Meaning my cat has trouble seeing due to the quivering of his eyes. I spoke with Gary about it shortly after diagnosis, and he said he can't remedy the situation for selling me a cat with a neurological disorder. When I mentioned the health guarantee he said it only pertains if the cat has died due to the condition but not the quality of life while the cat is alive. We are completely smitten with our blue-bicolor ragdoll kitten we got from Ragmeister. He is the most well balanced creature in our home. He has no weird fears or hand-ups. He will play with just about anything and is very accepting when something is taken away. He adjusted very quickly to our 1 yr old female Tortie and our 3 yr old male pii bull. Update #2: Our cat is such a good boy. We just had a big move to a new home and we replaced our litter box with a robotic one as part of the move. Our cat was running around happily across the apartment and playing within hours and had zero accidents (as usual) moving to a new home and litter-bot. I learned from my vet that cats in general get very stressed out from moves and usually hide and are nervous. Some cats are also too scared to use the litter robot and slow to adapt. Not our cat! Such a special cat from Ragmeister. Update: Adding photos from 1.5 years later. Such a silly cute cat we have I was pretty hesitant to get a rag doll from here based on the previous reviews. The fact is the rag doll I got is awesome with no health problems and the vet and staff describe him as the sweetest cat ever. Man, I'm not used to yelp at all, I tried to attach all those pictures of Pogi into this review but I ended up cluttering the page with like 15+ pics lol. I hope you all enjoy them anyways. I have had Pogi since 2012. He has blessed my life for the past six years now. As a kitten, he was rambunctious. When he got used to the house, he would zoom from one end of the house to the other! As healthy as can be. We never really had problems with him in terms of health. He even has this adventurous spirit to him. I swear he was an outdoor cat in his past life lol. Quite the escape artist he is. But one thing about him is that the two times he went missing, he always came back. We keep the sliding doors steadily locked now since he knows how to open them. I can go on for hours on his personality and stories I've had with him. My experience with Gary was nothing but positive. I remember returning from college a bit broken hearted, so my parents wanted to get a cat for me. I remember my first visit when we went into his house to see the kittens he had available. It was such a nice experience for him just to gently hand me the last two siblings that I held on my couch and drowned myself in the fluff. One of them we decided to adopt into our family as Pogi, it's "handsome" in Tagalog and he had responded to it well. I remember he was also informative about how to take care of my first cat. If I had* to complain about him, it would be cause he was a stickler for getting him proof months down the road that we get him neutered. Which is normal, cause we didn't pay the extra free to be able to breed our own cats. Really no big deal. Our daughter had been asking for a cat for awhile, and after a couple of years, we finally caved and decided to get one. I had always heard great things about ragdolls as family pets and did extensive research on the breed before deciding to get one. We "courted" Gary's business for over a year, and he was great about answering questions, though I do suggest calling rather than emailing. He also provided a copy of his book with a deposit. We put down a deposit and requested a female blue mitted, which is not one of the more varieties, and we didn't care that much about her color / pattern. Our kitty was born in a litter several months later and we picked her up when she was about 8 weeks old. She was absolutely gorgeous with deep blue eyes and a rabbit-fur snow-white coat, and we were all instantly in love with her. We took her home and she wanted a lot of love and cuddles for the first few weeks but she ate and used her litter box within minutes of coming home with us, which is always a good sign. We named her Luna. Surprisingly, she grew very fast, even though all my reading suggested that this breed is slow to mature. Cut to 9 months later, and she is 13 lbs. Our vet said she is a little overweight but many breeders say that vets aren't familiar with the attributes of purebred ragdolls. They are supposed to be large, cuddly cats with some fat underneath their skin. Well, our girl definitely has that! Her coat has also changed to a beautiful grayish white (thus the "blue" color description). She is sweetest, friendliest cat I have ever had, and actually very quiet. She only meows when she is really mad about something (like when we try to clean her butt if poop gets stuck), or when she's lonely and wants to come in our bedroom at night. While not exactly a lap cat, she always wants to be near us and follows us all around the house, including the shower. She doesn't seem to mind being picked up and carried around, and as the breed is famous for, she goes as limp as a wet noodle when picked up. While quite endearing, you actually have to be careful in how you pick her up. It can hurt her if you just pick her up under her front legs, like most people do when handling cats. We always support her bottom whenever handling her. Ragdolls are supposed to be trainable; however, we haven't had much luck in teaching her to fetch, walk on a leash, etc. We also haven't been very persistent. We just let her be a cat and do what she wants and that works fine for us. We had her spayed at 7 months (contract requires it be done between 5-7 months), sent the certificate of sterilization a few weeks later, and Gary did provide the papers about a month later. Even though we obviously don't plan to breed her, it was quite cute to see her lineage and all of the adorable names in her family. So far she has been healthy and free of disease. She does have kind of a sensitive tummy and some issues with loose poop, but they were mostly resolved by changing her food. She has also gotten 2 eye infections (different eyes) that were cleared up with antibiotic gel. She tested negative for feline herpes. In short, if you want a large, cuddly, beautiful, friendly cat with fur as soft (or softer) than a rabbit's and eyes that you could get lost in, Gary's cats are for you. read more

After doing much research and listening to my gut, I've decided to purchase a seal bi-color ragdoll kitten from Gary, back in November 2006. I named my boy, Chunk. My experience with Gary was a positive one, he followed through with email and phone correspondence in a timely manner. Received my papers quickly. And all through the years, Chunk NEVER had any health issues. He has only vomited twice in his life. He is also very loving, smart, floppy, and weighs 20 pounds. I'm SO SAD to read all of these negative reviews! I actually googled Gary in order to contact him about another kitten, and stumbled upon these. We bought a female kitten. Her birth date is 9/2013. She is gentle, loving and in perfect health! She has been to the vet regularly, has all of her vaccinations (less the ones not recommended by breeder) and she has been spayed. The vet and all of her assistants are in love with our cat and always compliment on her beauty. Now, I'm not sure why there seems to be more negative reviews showing than positive. But I can assure you, our experience with this breeder has been nothing short of excellent. He ALWAYS returns my emails in a timely fashion. I have never had a difficult time contacting him. I have left messages for him, and he has returned my calls, although email seemed to be much faster. I am not obligated to comment on him; I do not know him personally. My experience with Gary at Ragmeister Ragdolls has been nothing short of exceptional. I can say this with even more confidence now after having an experience on the opposite side where I encountered a breeder that gave me two FREE Ragdolls. While I love them - as I do all animals, they don't even come close to comparing to the baby I got from Gary. My Thor, born on 12/30/2014, has been the best pet I have ever had in my life. I've always been a dog person and after putting my last dog to sleep, I realized my heart couldn't take that every 8ish years (I like the BIG breeds!). So, I switched to the Ragdoll. Thor is incredibly loving, sensitive, attached - he's incredibly healthy - never been sick once - ever! Hmm, I find it VERY interesting that after 2 bad reviews he gets three 5 star reviews and one 4 star reviews all on the same day?!?! That right there is a BIG clue as to what kind of guy you'll be working with... Anyway, here's my experience. When I first learned about Ragdolls a few years ago, I was very excited to add get one for our family. I looked at a lot of breeders and realized how expensive they were. So, when I found Gary's website, I was excited that he was giving away a retired breeder (Warning sign #1!!) I drove all the way from Phoenix, AZ to pick up this cat. She was fine on the ride home and the first night. The next day she started acting weird, hiding under the bed and had blood coming out her backside. I contacted Gary (no response-warning #2), as well as two other breeders that I had initially contacted to find out more about the breed. Anyway, both said that she was probably hemorrhaging and would need an emergency spay (he did not spay her before releasing her to me-warning #3-NO reputable breeder does that). So, I take her in and sure enough, her uterus is about to rupture and she's got an infection. We get that surgery all taken care of and I contact Gary (via phone and email) to please forward me her papers, as he said he would send me her papers after I showed proof of her surgery. He never responded. I called and emailed him for a month with no reply (warning #4, a reputable breeder will always care for the welfare of the Ragdolls they breed and will always be willing to answer questions for you.) AFter she was healed from her surgery, she began pooping and peeing all over my child's bed. Once again, calls to Gary went unanswered , so I had to contact another Ragdoll breeder to see if she had any ideas. Also, another warning sign was, that after seeing more photos of Ragdolls, getting a second Ragdoll from a REPUTABLE breeder and doing more research, the cat we got for 'free' was SO not even show quality, she should have never been bred in the first place (legs and body too long, mitten coloring improper, not large enough, etc etc). Finally, my 6th and final warning sign is that this guy doesn't even show his cats, if he does, its very irregular (I know, I go to shows, and talk to breeders who do...) As you can see, I had a very bad experience and would not recommend this breeder to ANYONE!!!!! There are SOOOOO many amazing breeders in California, who love the breed, are passionate about the breed and genuinely care about each and every Ragdoll they place. Unfortunately, Gary is not one of them. And finally a note to Gary, you may have written a book in the 90's, but that does NOT make you a good breeder. You should get out of the business now (which I believe this is to you, a business, rather than a passion to improve the breed). read more

Contrary to the owner's comment, I am not trying to "damage" his reputation. Yelp is a forum for consumers to write honest reviews- both good and bad. The best way to learn about someone in an industry like breeding is to speak with peers. Not one breeder that I emailed tried to sell me one of their kittens or convince me that they were better. Some responses were simply that they had never heard of him or hadn't heard anything negative OR positive about him. However, a few breeders did comment that they worked with numerous parties who had received sick kittens from Ragmeister. As far as never receiving anything in writing, I was referring to him answering my questions in writing. He rarely answered any questions via email, only over the phone. Additionally, as I'm looking through my emails with him right now, I recalled that he was going to send the kitten home with me at 8-9 weeks, which is FAR too young. I was also responsible for neutering the kitten myself. I emailed him a list of 11 questions that I wanted answers to. Questions about the type of vaccines and testing they would receive, deworming, proof of purebred parents, conditions the cats are raised in, references, etc. His was response was simply, "I will answer all your questions later when I have time". When he did respond, he provided very general answers to all my specific questions. For example, when I asked which vaccines the kitten would receive, he said I would get a shot record indicating what the kitten had. He said he didn't have any photos of the parents (how is that even possible??) and I would receive registration papers 5-7 months after I've supplied him with proof that he has been fixed. He said the kitten won't be dewormed because "we don't have worms". Overall, he appeared very shady and confrontational, which is the reason for my 1 star review. read more

After reading the other reviews on the web, I cannot remain idle on the sideline..... Here is our story. My Wife and I began a relationship with this breeder a few years back. We bought a male bi-color flame kitten who we named, Cash. He would fetch, come when called, cuddle up for hours, run to the door when we got home, ect, ect. He was so great that I purchased a buddy for Cash from Ragmeister and named him Harley. They were a great pair providing hours of fun for anyone who was around them. Sadly, I received a call at 1am one morning while on a business trip and it was my Wife who was screaming in horror as Cash dropped dead without warning at age 3.5. We called Gary and he immediately offered a replacement kitten. We accepted and received a new female kitten, Dinah. Looking back, I should have picked up on the issue that the reaction to my call was not one of shock: a very business-like conversation from the Breeder's end. Side note: upon picking Dinah up from being spade, we were told that she has only 1 kidney! Just another warning sign we may be dealing with a questionable situation. Going through this horrible event, I began doing some research. I found that a leader in the field was Washington State University. We had our 2 Ragmeister Ragdolls tested for HCM. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common heart disease in all cats, and is most commonly genetic in cause. The disease causes thickening of the heart wall, which makes the heart pump less efficiently. The staff at Wash St said that Harley could live a full, normal life OR he could suffer the same fate as Cash. They implied that our breeder likely has HCM in the lines as it is known to be hereditary. Fast forward 2 years. Our sweet boy, Harley followed Cash's fate and dropped dead.........right in front of my 2 year old Daughter who adored him! I think of the old saying, "Once bitten, twice shy." Whether or not this is pure coincidence or we are just the most unlucky customers in the world, something just isn't right here. My goal- I simply want to help others to avoid the horrific events our family went through. Watching 2 cats die in front of you (and your children) is something no one should have to witness! I have no industry ties/agenda as I am a normal cat owner, like many of you out there. WE ARE DEVASTATED TO LOSE 2 CATS WHO WERE OUR LITTLE JOYS AND IF WE SAVE 1 FAMILY FROM GOING THROUGH THIS, IT WAS WORTH THE TIME! read more
