Rags just isn't the same anymore... years back it was still fantastic quality WITH great low prices. You can absolutely still find gems here but their prices are just crazy. I also find much of their staff to be not very welcoming and not great at fostering a fun and warm environment. I suggest when you are in Boulder you travel one to two mile south of the Rags store on 28th Street to our massive charity store next door to REI where you will find the same inventory at a quarter of the price. I have seem Rosie, Rags store manager at this thrift store before too. Rags has offered two consignment systems in recent past, one an unsupervised lord of the flies free-for-all style taking only a handful of first-come-first-served consignors pitting Boulder sisters against one another in a early morning lineup with car engines revving and running before the doors open, to a newer and deeply flawed appointment and selection process. read more

UPDATE: I appreciate the store responding. However, obviously Goodwill and a traditional consignment store are different. I shop at consignment stores all over the Denver Metro area and Rags is one of the most expensive and the hardest to find clothes in because of how they organize the clothes. The example of a Zara jacket (which, as stated, if not better when I really looked at it) was to showcase that the Rags price was just too high for a used clothing item. The rags price was even higher than any of the price for the same jacket on Poshmark. The service is really good and the people that work there really nice. But their items are super overpriced. I think they don't realize that it is used clothing, and they need to take that into account with pricing. There are other consignment stores that sell the same brands that are reasonably priced, Rags is definitely the most expensive. I found the exact same Zara jacket at both rags and at the Goodwill up the street. They were in the exact same condition, but the one at Goodwill was $24 and the one at Rags was priced at around $52. I also found the exact same jacket on Poshmark for $40. It is ridiculous, it's used clothing. I also hate how they organize the clothing. It really should be by size like every other store than by color/type. It makes it really hard to find things you like because you have to go through everything. read more

I like the store. I am giving up taking more in to consign because it is nearly impossible to get an appointment. It's not worth the stress of needing to check the website over a dozen times (I got lucky once in December), hoping to catch a cancellation. There is no waiting list option. When you bring in items, it depends on who is behind the counter as to whether they will keep any items. Most of the store is filled with items that appear to be at least 5-10 years old. I brought in items in perfect condition; the oldest items were no more than 3 years old. Out of a large bag, they chose 2 items. Do they only take items from friends? I've been a regular Rags shopper for over seven years. It is a phenomenal store with an eclectic range of styles and designer pieces at a fraction of the cost. Well-organized, spacious, and with clean and ample fitting rooms, this is hands-down my favorite resale shop in the area. One of my first great finds was a floor-length Roberto Cavalli gown for $75. Over the years, I've added dozens of staples to my wardrobe along with some fun and unique pieces, like a hand-tooled metallic leather crescent-shaped purse. Being a fan of all things related to or suggestive of a deal it's a wonder I haven't been in here before. This shop is absolutely lovely and hands down the most fun to peruse (and be in) of any consignment shop I've ever been in. The racks are well organized by item, color, and size. There is even a little kiddie area for young ones to play in while mommy shops. Today I had a particular item in mind. A dress for a friend's wedding. There were so many dresses. And all in great condition (which I haven't found to be the case at most consignment shops). I grabbed a literal armload and headed off to the dressing room. While I didn't find 'the one' I sure did have fun trying them on. I found a lovely striped J. Crew dress, as well as a sassy strapless I'd seen at Anthropologie (both reasonably priced). The dressing room was spacious, clean and pleasant to be in. Other sections I checked out were the shoe and accessories. Again most everything I inspected was in great condition. While I didn't consign any clothing myself I'd definitely consider stopping in the next time I clear out my closet. I'll most definitely be back. After all I have a $5 off a $25 purchase coupon (Chinook book) that's burning a hole in my wallet. read more

Not quite sure what's up with all the ragging on Rags - I love coming here! I've picked up a Herschel bag, sports bras, dresses, shoes here for amazing prizes given the quality and condition. Sure there are brand-name shoes in less than great shape they sell for 33$ -- but if you don't want it don't buy it! You don't have to look too hard to find almost new or new-with-tags items on the racks. The store is spacious, organized, and well-sorted. Plenty of dressing rooms and easy to find the size and color you're looking for. I've also consigned there - look online at their website and you'll see they're clear about brands they don't accept and styles they're seeking out. I pick up clothes that aren't sold at the end of a month but you can also ask them to donate for you. Re: comments about staff attitude - if you want them to say hi, go ahead and say hi. I usually go in dressed pretty casually (sloppy? hope not) and feel a little self conscious about it, but I've always found what I needed and been offered a place to put my shopping items when my arms are overflowing. SELLER BEWARE!!!!! Honestly when it comes to selling to them I would not recommend. They are very sketchy. I took items in and they keep them to sell for 6 weeks, you get 40% of what it sells for. Ok, fine that is not great but it's something I guess and that piece of info is clearly stated online. So I went in and they kept 14 of my items and gave me the run-down of how it all works. Once you allow them to keep your items to sell, they then give you a choice to "pick up" your items if they don't sell or to "donate them..." aka it becomes THEIR property. If you pick the choice to "pick them up" they give you a 2 day window to do it, otherwise again it becomes THEIR property. The lady told me that it's best to give them a call 1 or 2 weeks before your pickup window to see the status of your items, so I did that. I called 1 week before I was supposed to pick them up, my 2 day window pickup time. The lady on the phone told me, "oh looks like ALL your items have sold!" I asked are u sure? All 14 of them? Because I was surprised by that. She told me YES and said there was no need to rush in to come to get my money, that I can come get it "whenever." I was gunna wait until next week to go in but something in my mind told me go in during my "pickup window," just to make sure. Low and behold I got there today to get my cash, the lady gave me the cash and was like "I'll go grab your unsold items for you." and I was like huh? The lady on the phone a week ago told me they ALL sold. She was like nope only 5 items sold. So, I dunno if it was an honest mistake by the gal on the phone telling me "don't rush in, all your stuff is sold" or a ploy to get me to come in late so COULDN'T get my additional 9 items back because it's become their property now, aka they now get to keep my items and 100% of the profits from it. My gut feeling is it's the latter of the 2. I don't think it's an honest place to sell to, they are sketchy and lying to you and I think on purpose! read more

If you're a consignor - STAY AWAY!! Sadly RAGS Boulder has turned into a total scam. They don't "consign" anything. You give them your clothes and they make money off them; you get nothing. I have consigned three times in the last year. I have not had any problem with them taking my items (I think they took 8/10 on last visit). The problem starts *after* they take my clothes. They have a 30-day window to consign them so that the consignor takes a cut. During this 30-day window, they invariably price your clothes ridiculously high so that inevitably they don't sell. None of them sell, none. After 30 days, the clothes revert to RAGS (because nobody bothers to pick them up) and they immediately slash the price, sell your clothes, and pocket ALL the money. It is a total and complete racket. If you're going to donate your clothes, you might as well donate them to an actual charity instead of a for-profit store. Never again. There are other consignment places - stay away. read more

Shopping and selections were good, and service was amazing, but every time I have gone in they play depressing music. Once i've been in there for more than 10 minutes the shopping mood has been killed and I honestly just want to go home. Would really elevate the experience if they played better music! read more

I've been consigning with them for a few years now, but have reached a point where I dread dealing with the consignors and am looking for a new store to work with. First, consigning - they aren't consistent with what they want and don't want and if you bring clothes here, be prepared for a very condescending experience at the consigning desk. They are people with a little bit of power and they'll let you know it. The last time I was in I brought several pieces of jewelry in - they took all but one and I couldn't figure out why they didn't take the one thing. Turns out the consignor broke the necklace while she was looking at it and never said a word to me when she put it back in the bag. As far as the clothing, they brand themselves as "upscale" and while they sometimes have upscale brands, the actual clothing looks very tired and worn. Truth be told I've never bought any clothing or shoes here, just belts and handbags. Not interested in wearing things that are pilled or that look old. And when I see that stuff, I wonder where the condescending consignor was when it was brought in lol. Very hit or miss. There are other places with employees who have better attitudes so that's where I'll be doing my business in the future. read more

They have a section for nore affordable stuff like free people etc and a section for high end designer stuff. Prices are a little high, BUT if you want cheap, go to Goodwill, really I've found some great deals there. But as with any consignment or thrift, it's hit or miss. Rags has a lot of cute clothes A LOT. And I consign through them (first time I've ever consigned) and that experience has been pretty good. Sure I'd like to get more for my clothes and I would argue that some of the clothes they've rejected are not too dated, but overall, I have a very positive experience whenever I go in to consign or shop. Why buy new and contribute to our dwindling natural resources and pollution generated by the textile industry? I'd recommend checking Rags out, I'll bet you'll find something you'll like. They had some great items in the store but think they could rethink a couple of things. It drove me a little crazy that they organized the clothing by color rather than size. If I wanted to spend lots of time sorting through clothes, I would go to the thrift store. If I'm going to be paying $20-30 for a shirt, I don't want to SORT through every rack. I realize it makes it looks nice but wonder if it isn't a tactic to keep you in the store longer ?! The sales associates are always hit or miss in this store. The first time I walked into Rags I inquired about consignment. After a long look up and down from the associate, I was told that they "really only take higher end clothing." and was given no other information. That was a few years ago. I decided that maybe she was having a bad day or was just a nasty person and went in again a couple weeks ago. The store looked nice, smelled bad. And much to my dismay the staff was not any nicer. The women working there make the whole experience dreadful. Some fabreeze wouldn't hurt either. I couldn't believe the reviews I read on here today. A woman with MS being berrated for not hanging a pair of pants back up properly?! Anyone being lectured for not doing something that the lecturer is PAID to do is unacceptable! Employees trying on clothes while on the clock?! Who does these kinds of things? Needless to say, I will NEVER go here again and I will most certainly tell my friends not to as well. I've been consigning at Rags to Riches for years. I've had two problems-once some of the items I consigned were put under some else's name. Luckily one of the items was still on the floor so I was able to find the account that my items went to. On a few other occasions I've had things stolen. If someone who shoplifts ever tells you they are doing it to get back at the man because stores charge too much, yada, yada, yada, don't believe it. Lowlife shoplifters will even steal used clothing from individuals. It has nothing to do with being a subversive, anti-establishment type. It can be a bit difficult to consign at this store. The vetting process is stringent. I suggest making sure your clothes are spotless and on hangers-as well they should be for the protection of would be buyers. I have noted that they seem to take about half of what you bring in. It must be some sort of unwritten policy so that they can take something from everyone. I've found great bargains at this store, but the best things are always in the smallest sizes. Tens and large are scarce, though my friend tells me that 12/14's and x-large are very very scarce. You'll probably do best here if you are a size 8 or less. Rags is definitely one of the best consignment stores around, but I'm sort of becoming a fan of Common Threads-the consignment store just down the road, behind Kinko's and the Boulder Running Store. The clothes there are beyond believeable-it seems the word is out in the boulder boutique scene and the employees that work at places like Max and Chelsa are consigning there-so if you're looking for designer I'd check Common Threads out too. Plus they offer all these interesting classes about reworking garmets and making things on in store showing machines or creating leather belts-which if you're really interested in clothes-seems like it would be a lot of fun. MY ONE BIG COMPLAINT about Rags is their parking lot. You wouldn't believe any parking lot could be worse than Whole Foods, but it is. Spaces are way to small and door has been banged there many times. UGHHHH. read more

Love this place. I go to Common Threads in Denver for most of my upscale shopping. I am glad I found another alternative. Rags have better prices and better selections in my opinion. If it's not that far from Denver I would probably go every week. Most of the high end designers stuff are in the back. In the front they have mostly brands like BR, JCrew, Gap, Ann Taylor, etc. Staff are friendly and helpful. When I was there the dressing rooms (no door just drape) were not crowded at all but I heard from my friend that they can be and you have to wait in line if you want to try something on. They have their own parking lot which is always a plus in Boulder. I haven't tried consigning with them so I can't comment on that. I would definitely return for more designer treasures! read more

This is by far the best consignment store in the city. The items are fresh and current, the selections their staff chooses are discerning and the quality is apparent. If you are seeking designer labels, this place has them and the clothing and accessories have only been gently used. Great accessories, jewelry, belts, hats, shoes, handbags...you get it. Merchandise is showcased in an environment that is delightful and conducive for easy perusal. I love how they've arranged things by color group - AWESOME! The shop also has wonderful dressing rooms and ambient lighting that filters in from the large storefront windows. And for the Mothers on the go - you can bring your kids and they can play in a large inviting children's play area, so you can shop in peace :-) read more

This place is hit-or-miss depending on the day. It's organized by color with circular racks which makes it easy to browse and it doesn't feel messy like other consignment shops. There's a better shoe selection that other places, and a good selection of outerwear. I think their stuff is in better shape that their competitors-- a lot of it seems like it was never worn. Wealthy Boulder people get rid of a lot of nice stuff. But...I think their prices are also higher. Sometimes it seems like I could buy it new on sale for not much more money. My only real complaint is that when I went I had to wait ten minutes for a dressing room, only to realize that the people hogging the dressing rooms were employees trying on clothes while working! read more

My favorite consignment store in the entire metro Denver! I always find their selection of clothes is great. Yes, the prices are higher than Goodwill, but you don't find a 2011 Marc Jacobs dress at Goodwill either... I consign a lot of my things here and always sell majority of them for a decent price. Considering I could buy a lot of the clothes (not the brand name but essentially the same thing) much cheaper new at TJ Max, Costco or online... I'd have to give this a 1 star. My favorite consignment store in Boulder, maybe my favorite store overall. Great brands, I see a lot of J Crew, Banana Republic, Free People, and good for my mother too, she likes their Talbotts and Coldwater Creek, for pretty good prices. I'd say on par with Marshalls or Nordstrom rack, but with a better brand selection, and new clothes each day. Clothes are sorted by COLOR, then SIZE. This is not a problem, it just means you have to go to your size in each color section. I have never seen damaged clothing at this store, and service has been average for this kind of setup. Went to Common Threads for the first time today. I found three large stains in two minutes and left. Clothes were seemingly thrown randomly on racks, with no regard to anything except clothing type (dress, pant, etc). Also, Common Threads carries styles with a more hippy vibe. Very Boulder. However, that doesn't match my sense of style. I can't hold that against them, but that may be part of why I prefer Rags. read more

Way too pricey for my kind of consignment shopping. If it's over $4.99 I might as well but it new.

What annoys me about most thrift stores (clutter, confusion, overcrowdedness, and the impossibility of EVER finding the clothing item you want without completely destroying the store) simply doesn't exist at Rags. Remarkably, the space is open and inviting, with bags and purses sparingly adorning the walls, and circular racks of clothes arranged by color and by style placed here and there across the floor. There's room to walk around without bumping into every other patron on the floor. You can see the clothes without having to rummage. Want a pink cardigan? Look for the pink/red rack, make sure there are tops on it, and go to town! Want size 6 pants? Go to the size-6-pants-rack. It's really not difficult. As with any other thrift store, you do have to paw through a fair amount of crap before you get to anything you'd ever consider wearing outside the house. But I feel like Rags has less crap than the average thrift store. I'm not sure if it's because they filter what they sell or they just have an unusually fashion-forward consigning clientele. I've found some of the cutest outfits in my wardrobe here, and though it's not the cheapest thrift store ever (since the clients set their prices, I believe) you can definitely find some real deals if you look. I found a pair of Prana hiking pants for $18 last year, and have gotten a bunch of intricately designed shirts for under $20 each. Other perks: everyone's friendly, the salespeople will give you advice on how you look in things only if you ask, you can leave your bag at the counter while you're shopping, and there's a kiddie area in the back with some basic toys to entertain your kids while you browse. My ONE complaint: no mens' clothes! I often go thrifting with a guy friend of mine, and I always have to drag him by Rags, and the poor guy can't even shop there. As with any consignment store you have to visit frequently as the stock changes. Some days I find lots of things that I want, some days I find nothing, but it's also an interesting stop. I like how the store is organized by color - makes the shopping experience much more organized and approachable for me. I do go to Rags, but not on a regular basis any more. Someone mentioned the small sizes. Note, the girls that work there are small. I think they do have favorite friends and sizes they select. I have had very nice items refused only to see a junk T in the rack. I have found a new store I really like in Longmont called Fabulous Finds. More to select from in sizes 8 and up. Many Boulderites jokingly call this place Rags to bitches. The staff is mostly snobbish especially when bringing clothes in to consign. I have mostly high end, clean, name brand clothes, but to hear, "we won't be taking these today" over and over again, over the last 20 years, makes you not want to do business with them in any way. They have some good/great stuff but not for cheap. Their prices take the fun out of "thrift" shopping. Seriously? And why have all the clothes hanging by color? To keep us in the store longer? I'm sure of it. What a hassle to have to look through every white shirt to find your size. Not a genius move and very annoying to many of my friends, which is why we don't shop there any more. I will give 3 stars because they carry high end, name brand products. The staff could be friendlier and less snobby though. read more
