On a trip down 6th street (nightmare) I stopped into a smoke shop. A local chick there said that we should check out Rainey Street. She described it as a street of houses that were turned into bars. Obviously, we had to check this out. When we arrived I was surprised at how cute the area was. It was a week night and it was very cold, so there weren't really crowds. However, I can see this place being SLAMMED on a nice night. There's plenty of options. If you're a visitor to Austin like I was note that these places only take cash. In, fact Austin LOVES having ATM machines pretty much everywhere. It was kind of humorous to see them every couple of feet. We bounce about from a couple of places. All of them had a different style and the spot we ended up at was great! Our hotel was right of 6th street, and it would be a shame for anyone to walk down that street and skip this one. A big plus is that you won't be hassled by aggressive homeless people here. This is a perfect spot to spend the afternoon or night. I'm almost 10 years past the college age, but I'm sure the University students love this spot, I would have! Just as a side note I see some people criticizing this place for being hipster. If you are one of those anti-hipster people skip it. It's for sure got that vibe. read more

After having gone down 6th Street amongst the bros.. Rainey Street was definitely refreshing. My shuttle driver mentioned Rainey Street.. Then when I got there, I remember hearing about a street of bars that are houses converted into bars. This is it! I wouldn't drive there. It's not a big street. Parking is terrible. It's not very well lit in the evening. There's a lot of gravel and dirt so choose shoes wisely. It's mostly bars but there's also food trucks and other places to eat.. .. and lots of live music. read more

We were there on a very windy Tuesday so there wasn't anything going on. Plus it was early so the trucks weren't open yet. However, it's a really cool vibe and next time I will go a little later so I can really get a feel and taste of the place. I definitely recommend it read more

If you are looking for some really nice open air bars and food trucks this is your street. The street itself isn't that long so you can easily walk the whole thing. Many of the bars are open air with music. These bars looked to be renovated houses which means they were close to each other, like a neighborhood. This means sometimes you can hear the music from the neighbor bar as well as the music from the bar you are in. We were there on a Sunday afternoon/evening and there was a nice mix of ages at the bars. read more

I have been to Austin for a night / weekend out many times but someone recently mentioned Rainey Street to me so we checked it out. I can't believe that I had missed out on it for so long. Very cool street with an awesome vibe! Excellent for just walking around and checking different things!! Food & Drink wise... Has a great mix of all walks of life. I like that in renovating this area, they didn't just build up cold condo or apartment complexes with businesses in the bottom, like so many areas have done throughout the US. They have maintained the neighborhood feel of the street, and slowly turned old properties, into restaurants and bars. I think the street looks great at night with the twinkling lights in the trees and on the different businesses. You just need to be careful of the cars driving down the street and the people haphazardly walking about. There is also an area in which you can find several food trucks to explore. Definitely a unique place to explore with friends. Love that the restaurants and bars have a homey quality to them. read more

Cool street with different restaurants, bars and a couple of food trucks. A cool spot to hang out and people watch. Mostly all 21+ places however we were able to find a restaurant called El Narango that served us outside on the lawn so we could enjoy the night. We tried the vegetable empanadas, Sirloin steak burritos, a shrimp dish with olive oil, garlic and orange juice that was all tasty. We had Luckys doughnuts that were good too. Ok so my short time in Austin i was told to avoid Rainey Street because its crowded with the college crowd. I shouldn't have listened to them and i wish i visited the day before i left. I rode my city bike around to discover a place to grab a Micheleda. Unfortunately this place is closed in the mornings. maybe one place was open that only served breakfast. Not my style. I like a cold beer and tacos first thing for a hangover. I did visit again in the afternoon and met some cool people and soaked in the scenery. For those who say dont go because of X y Z, just go and decipher for yourself. You wont be disappointed. read more

Best street in town. Its got great food, live music and fun times. Lustre Pearl is my go to bar if I cant think of anywhere else to go. Ping Pong Tables make anyone happy. I cant wait for more houses to come alive. read more

6th Street is full of college students and drunk people who want to cause problems. Rainey street is classy, has great food trucks, and has a crowd which isn't the underbelly of "going out". Easy parking too (pricey, but worth it). I highly recommend the bars on Rainey read more

I don't know how Austin does it but they take a really simple concept and flip it on its backside into a kick ass trend. Case in point? Rainey Street. It's a block of houses converted to bars that all boast a spacious interior, cool patio, and some kind of off the wall theme. Even the Indian restaurant felt like you were chowing down on naan in the middle of the Arabian dessert (I know that's in the Middle East, but you get my drift). I could hang out there for a week nonstop and not get sick of it. If keeping Austin weird means that people transform their creative juices into something for the greater good of the nightlife/restaurant scene, I'm all for encouraging the wackadoodledooness! read more

There are usually tons of people on a Friday night. Lines are super long and the drinks are expensive. It's mostly just a bunch of frats and societies. We didn't really fit in anywhere LOL try it out during the day and it's a little more enjoyable. read more

I've been to Rainey St. quite a few times and each time I enjoy it just a little more than the last. Parking on that street is not ideal, nor recommended. Lots of peds and drivers on a narrow street so be careful. Some of the abandoned looking houses actually do pay-to-park in their backyard. Great bars, even better dining, and for the extremely casual, there are a quite a few selections to choose from in the food truck area. Ah yes, and live music of course. read more

Was a fun street to bounce from bar to bar. Went on a Sunday night and it was pretty busy. I imagine it gets pretty crazy on the weekends.

If you come to Austin this is a place you should check out. It is totally different than anything I have ever seen. They converted several houses on a small street into bars. You can literally walk from house to house and grab a drink and try their food trucks. The place gets really crowded in the weekends so you will probably have to pay for parking, but even that is not too much. I think we paid 5 bucks to park a block away. The one bar we spend most of our time at had a large back yard with huge TV's playing college football. It's a good place to chill with friends, grab a beer, and watch the game. I'm glad my coworker recommended this place it was a cool spot to visit. read more

I have finally made the tour through Rainey Street. My husband and I were entertaining my friend from out of town. I told her we were going to Rainey because it's the cool place to go and I haven't been so it was a great excuse to go out. There's something for everything here but every place is pretty laid back. We got there early at around 8PM. There was a paid lot that had plenty of space. We stopped in on quite a few places. I love all the houses that are converted into nice spacious bars. The outdoor parts of all the places are the best. The bars had a good mix of craft cocktails, craft/local beers. If you get hungry through your journey on Rainey there's a few restaurant/bar places and even a food court of of food trucks. I thought there would be tons of hipsters but it was decent mix of people: college, young professionals, early 30s, bros and sorority girls, hipsters, guys with beards (come we are in Austin) and some older folks. I love people watching and this was the perfect place for it. During the course of the evening while we were people watching we were trying to determine if Rainey Street was a local scene or tourist scene. After reading some of the review and thinking back at all the people watching we did I think it would be split of both. I was born and raised in the Austin area, moved away and live in several different cities and am finally back home for about a year and half now. I'm a minority here because EVERYONE wants to move to Austin. At any rate whether you're visiting or a resident of Austin, check out Rainey Street for a night of fun. read more

Giving a review about the entire street is like saying hey, you should visit such and such a town. But if you are in Austin, whether you live here or are visiting friends, coming in for a show or just driving thru, you need to visit Rainie. Now I have been frequenting Rainie street before there was even a reason to go there, which made the explosion of fun things to do that much more exciting. We love the Garage mahal, Cazamance (when it was still there), Lustre Pearl, Icenhouser's, La Naranja ( when it was still a truck - but we love it more now that its a sit down), bar 69, and Clive, but now there is so much more, at the end of street going south, there is a new Cove of Truck with Art of Tacos, Tapas Bravas to name a few. So here's the deal. You need to park, go on an empty stomach, be ready to drink some fun drinks, hang out and enjoy the scene. its street fare in a small urban neighborhood. While individual bars are okay, the area itself is pretty dangerous in terms of usability. It is generally poorly lit. The sidewalks, where they exist, are overgrown with bushes and weeds. There are a lot of areas where there are no sidewalks, so you have to walk in the street around cars parked on both sides and 2-way traffic trying to get around pedestrians. And everyone is drunk. I don't think it's clever to put bars in old houses, so the kitsch factor is lost on me. This is all basically the same crap as the rest of downtown and east austin, with more self-importance, more perilous walkways, and more craft beers. And storage containers used as shelter. This street is so much fun! Don't miss it if you're in the city. I liked it more than the popular night hotspots closer to downtown. This street is a block of old houses, converted into restaurants/bars- so the feeling is homey and quaint at each place- some even have backyards. My favorite area to bar hop in Austin! A large group of us were visiting from out of town and wanted to go out for some drinks and dancing. I agree with everyone else who says that Rainey Street is more a scene for mid-to-late 20 and 30 year olds instead of the younger undergrad vibe of 6th St. We definitely fit that mold so we felt right at home on Rainey! We got some grub at the local food trucks that scatter the street. Delicious. Then we started out at Container Bar...super cool and huge! Love how they made the entire bar out of old shipping containers! We ended the night at Parlor Room for some dancing. Great DJ there! Smaller bar in general but plenty of room on the patio. If you want a good time in Austin but don't want to deal with sorority/fraternity drunkenness...head to Rainey!! read more

A great alternative to the more obvious bar scenes in downtown Austin. If you like to be a bit more relaxed and want a low key scene you should try this street out. Cool concept of changing old bungalow houses into bars. If anything, it would be a good place to try at least once. read more

We enjoyed Rainey St. a lot more than 6th St. This was a lot more chill than the hustle and noise on 6th. About a mile of bars back to back. I really liked checking out every single one. Each one was different. I'm not sure what's going on with all the hotels and apts. in the area that's popping up but this is pretty dangerous if you live or stay close (because you'll want to drink, drink drink). hahah ;) read more
