If you grew up in a Latin household - something about old school salsa / cumbia / merengue music…read moretakes you back to a place that is nostalgic and healing all at once. That's what I experienced when I visited Hoy Como Ayer on Friday night. The set up on stage is giving vintage havana of yester-year, and there was a DJ who was great. There are some couches on the side, but make no mistake when you walk in you are here to dance. There are high tops circling the dance floor but it's wide open for you to get your groove on. When I arrived around 9 I told myself I was only going to stay until before midnight - well joke's on me because the music got me and I was there until 2 am. Signs of a good DJ, good Vibes, and a good night. The cocktail menu has classics, and while I started with a gimlet I switched to gin and tonic for most of the night. There is also an outside patio if you want to chill and not be in the dance floor. As someone who loves the dance floor, I never went outside, but my friends told me it was cute. While I looooove a good night out dancing to perreo, these old school vibes keep our OG Miami and Latin culture alive, and that's something I loved about my visit to Hoy Como Ayer. The DJ - el Gran Cucu and the live timbalero El Gato were amazing. The only thing better than old school salsa, is listening to old school salsa with live percussion. Grab your fave dancing shoes, text your girls, and take yourselves for a night out in Little Havana!

I thought for a moment, paid the cover, and walked in. The music was pretty good. The place was not full, this was probably some underground event. I got a cocktail to try, it was pretty good but cocktails and punk don't match, so I switched to cheap bear when I was done. It's a cool venue, close to me, and the staff was very friendly. I had a good time.

I used to go to the club in my college years. After the hotel was sold, the club moved to the Rocky Horror venue in Coconut Grove. In 1999 after that closed too, the club became a roaming pop up at different South Florida venues. Which is how I came to be at Bar Nancy in Little Havana on a Saturday night. They host a monthly Kitchen Club night. Almost everything was closed in Little Havana by the time I arrived so it was surprisingly easy to find metered street parking only two blocks away. Bar Nancy did not have a cover charge which was nice. The bar is decorated like a pirate ship with many nautical touches. It is named for the brigantine Nancy, which transported war supplies during the American Revolution. The room the bar is located in was small, dark, hot, and crowded. Many people enjoyed themselves on the dance floor in front of the DJ. They also have a backyard area that was popular. My favorite room was the one between the two. It was decorated like the Captains quarters with a couch and comfortable chairs. I could still enjoy the music and more importantly, the air conditioning. During the night I had a delicious Amaretto Sour. Despite the dive bar surroundings, it was a hefty $15. While that is expensive for a cocktail, it was a small price to pay to relive my youth for one evening.

Once we finally got in, we were on the first floor first. Oscar G was in the basement, and on the first floor, the music was decent, but the volume? It was cranked so high it sounded like the speakers were broken. Just overwhelming bass drowning everything out. The same thing was happening the second time I went. Downstairs though? Totally different story. The energy was insane, the vibe was right, and Oscar G delivered. That part of the night made it all worth it. Great music, good crowd, and one of those sets that makes you forget how long you waited to get in. Mode can be great, but it really depends on the night and who's spinning. Check the lineup before you go, and maybe bring earplugs just in case.

The underground setting has a dark, intimate atmosphere that fits the theme well and creates a unique backdrop for the evening. It feels a little hidden away, which adds to the experience. The magic show was entertaining, and the performer was clearly talented. There were several impressive moments throughout the performance, and the audience seemed engaged. My biggest complaint is that it was often difficult to hear him. A microphone would make a huge difference, especially in a room where ambient noise can compete with the performance. The drinks were hit or miss. Some were enjoyable, while others fell flat, making the beverage experience feel a bit inconsistent. Overall, the concept is creative, the venue is charming, and the show is worth seeing, but there are a few areas that could be improved to make the experience feel more polished.
