I haven't stayed there personally, but I can give you the lowdown based on what I found on the property talking to the owner and some guests I ran into and joked around with. First off, the owner is a real go-getter, ambitious, always looking to expand and improve. I love that entrepreneurial spirit! It's exciting to hear about the future business ventures they have in mind. Who knows what kind of cool stuff they'll come up with next? Now, let's talk about the property and the BnBs. Apparently, so the owner and his team built everything themselves, and from what I've seen, they did an incredible job. The attention to detail is top-notch, and the interior of those tiny houses is supposedly mind-blowing. I mean, who wouldn't want to stay in a cozy little space that looks amazing? But wait, there's more! On the premises, they've got a sports bar, a cigar bar, a coffee shop, and food coming soon? That's like a one-stop shop for all your relaxation needs. You can kick back with a cold one, enjoy a fine cigar, sip on some delicious coffee, and satisfy your hunger all in one place. It's like a mini vacation wonderland! Now, here's the catch, my friend. These rooms are apparently very affordable, but you gotta be quick on the draw if you want to snag an extended stay. They fill up faster than a Conor McGregor knockout. So, if you're planning on staying a while, make sure to book early and secure your spot. It's midway between a lot of other great restaurants and bars and adventures. The park itself is awesome. We always see deer. We have seen turkeys, raccoons, lot of birds... nice scenery, great hiking. Someone said the pool is poorly maintained, we never looked. One review complained the lake was low... its primary purpose is crop irrigation, get over it. It is a long walk to the rooms and they always put us way out though it is always empty? Restaurant was out of business on our last trip, in the past it was less than mediocre. Had a scorpion in the bathroom! Trip before we had an 8 inch centipede in the room! Guess that's what you get for being "out there" it is a rustic state park after all... There is a Holiday Inn and a Fairmont in Altus. They both get middling reviews and last week were $200 a night! The Holiday Inn smells funny and the room carpets have a funky film on them. I'll take a 20 minute drive, wild life and even a scorpion or two over that any time! With the senior discount it was $145 at the lodge. The state of Oklahoma should do a better marketing job. This is a wasted resource.

This is specifically about our experience at the independently owned Wichita Falls location. We also went in with reasonable expectations. We knew it was offseason and figured some activities would be scaled back and hours would be shorter -- fine, that's normal. What we didn't expect was for so much of what the resort advertises to just... not be available, especially with it being 105-107 degrees the whole time we were there. The main water park was closed Monday through Thursday and most of Friday. The regular pools shut down at 7pm even though it was still light out and still hot. The camp store was barely open. That's not an offseason schedule, that's a resort that's mostly closed while still charging full price. The part that really got under my skin: at one point the water park was open -- but only for an outside school group, while resort guests were still being told it was closed. I don't know what arrangement was behind that and I'm not going to guess, but if I'm paying to stay there, I think it's fair to ask why a group that isn't even staying at the resort gets access before the people who are. When it did finally open for guests, around 5pm, two lifeguards showed up and then spent most of the next couple hours standing in a corner chatting with their backs to the slides. So whatever the reasoning was for keeping it closed all day, it didn't look like a staffing issue. The property itself was rough. Potholes, weeds coming up through the concrete, tile missing or falling apart around the water features, tar stuck to our campsite pad, dog waste on the pad when we pulled in, leftover trash and old camper parts sitting around, cars that looked broken down or just abandoned in random spots, plywood sheets serving as the walkway to one of the kids' inflatables. Any one of these on its own wouldn't be a big deal. All of it together made the place feel neglected in a way that didn't match the pictures. There was also a moment with the campground speed limit that stuck with me. I was over the 5 mph limit, no argument there, but going slow and careful on a completely empty road -- no other cars, no golf carts (besides the one about to be mentioned), no pedestrians in sight. Two employees in a golf cart flagged me down and made a whole production out of it. I wasn't cited, and I'm not saying rules don't apply just because no one's around. It was the manner -- the theatrics of it on an empty road -- that irked me, not the fact that I got flagged at all. They adamantly waved their hands - in unison - like I was going 50mph, when I hadn't even breached 15. Mind you, the front of the park is about 1/2 mile from our campsite. 5mph with guests all over and kids running across the street? No questions asked. Rules are rules; I'm okay with that, but don't throw your hands up at down like you're red flagging an F1 race. Ask me to stop and have a conversation with me. It's the manner of the interaction that caught me, not the request to slow. Watched them do the same thing to another guest a bit later. Then there was the veteran discount on a golf cart rental -- I had to drive all the way back to prove my status for what amounted to about $15 off. Again, fine, they're allowed to ask for proof. But stacked on top of everything else, it started to feel like the small stuff was getting way more attention than the big stuff. Do you really think I'm making it up? For $15? That's really the whole complaint. I can deal with offseason hours. I can deal with an older property showing some age. I can deal with rules. What's hard to deal with is paying for the full Jellystone experience while most of it is closed, the grounds are falling apart, and the staff energy goes toward policing the handful of guests who are actually there instead of fixing any of it. There's real potential in this location, and Paula alone makes up for some of it. But based on this stay, I wouldn't go back to Wichita Falls unless there's a real, visible change in how amenities are run, how the property is maintained, and how guests are treated.

So naturally, when I got the news that I was going to be spending almost 4 months in Altus, I quickly put in my request for a room. And let me tell you, my experience was far better than I ever imagined. Mike and Skylar are absolutely phenomenal landlords. They made the process of booking a room with them super easy. They were always quick with their responses if you had any questions and were quick to fix any problems if they came up with the house. While I was there they were making upgrades to the house and doing some small renovations to make sure we were getting the best experience possible. Not only that but they were there for any questions you had on life after Altus if you needed it as well. Crystal, the cleaning lady, comes once a week to make the place look like new. I had heard of other crash pads having issues with their cleaning lady but never with Crystal. Lastly, The Bat Cave will give you the opportunity to create friendships that you'll carry with you throughout your entire career. Didn't matter if you were a KC-135 guy or a C-17 guy, if you were at The Bat Cave you were one of the bros. Couldn't have asked for a better group of dudes then the ones I got the chance to live with while I was there. So if you're looking for a place to stay, the search stops here.
