Given that takoyaki is made with octopus, something that many non-Japanese are averse to, I had given up hope on finding these doughy balls of flavor anywhere outside of Japan. But, lo and behold, as my husband and I were walking through Strasbourg one cold night, we stumbled upon Yaki House. We ordered the traditional, and watched as our server hand made each piece (with exactly the tools and care it's made with in Japan!), and added all of the typical green onions, bonito flakes, kyuupi mayo, etc. It was piping hot, delicious, and best of all, authentic! Even my husband, who had never had such a dish before, thought it was delicious. We regretted making dinner reservations for later that night otherwise we would've ordered more right on the spot. Even better was the fact that the space was super cozy with fun vintage Japanese decorations, with low noise levels - future date night material for sure. Can't wait to come back and try the okonomiyaki too!

After visiting the Christmas market we ran across this small sushi place behind the Cathedral. Since I was not in my three-hour lunch mode anymore, I found the service quite slow. The decor was modern, almost fast food like. The waitress was Asian but obviously not Japanese. When I ordered the sushi pieces by their Japanese name as they were written on the menu, she appeared to have trouble understanding. We only ordered a few things and the final order was not even correct; she had brought us Saba (mackerel) instead of Maguro (ahi tuna). Of course they were gracious about exchanging it. The sushi was of excellent quality. The pickled cabbage salad I ordered was wonderful. But it certainly did not taste Japanese. Instead it was of excellent German Krautsalat (coleslaw). I wish we had this quality of sushi where we live in Landstuhl, Germany.

Unfortunately the menu in the restaurant says that the specialty rolls can only be ordered at night and not during the day, why? I asked for an exception was told no, despite the fact that the only order the chef was working on would be mine. Second, I decided to choose something from the 'nouveauties' menu, then was told that the items were unavailable. Leaving only the standard sushi choices that every other damn sushi restaurant in France sells. I've decided to take the cheapest item on the menu as I'm hungry and need energy. We took the "samurai" boat for two, which includes sushi, maki, sashimi, and 4 skewers! As well as a miso soup and cabbage salad as the entree, and the customary bowl of rice. Their fish was very fresh and tasted amazing. Especially their dorade and great scallop sashimis. Except for the cheese one, which was somewhat mediocre, the skewers were all very tasteful and juicy. The miso soup and cabbage salad weren't anything extraordinary, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. We took three desserts, and I especially recommend their "coco pearls". It's two little balls of egg yolk stuffed glutinous rice paste covered in coconut. It's one of their (if not the) cheapest dessert on their menu, but still blows their more expensive desserts out of the water. The place itself is quiet, and although not high class, it has a nice atmosphere to it. All in all, it's very high quality for a very fair price.

The side of rice was not even fresh. I make better rice for my kids at home with my rice cooker. It was amazed and curious at the amount of business this place was doing. Do people here know what good Japanese food, or what sushi fish should taste like? I don't understand how this place is rated 4 stars, but that's enough of a sign for me to never eat Japanese in Strasbourg again. The sushi makis were good (tuna and salmon) and the inside out California roll with salmon. The chicken balls, gyoza, and miso soup were all good as well. I was disappointed because the slices of fish in the chirashi were super thin. Think of how thin carpaccio-- that was how thin the slices were. I'm pretty sure chirashi should have sashimi-sized slices on top, so I was not impressed with the thinly shaved fish on top of the rice. Taste-wise it was okay. The C4 was 14.90€, a small glass of the house white wine was 2.50€. Overall I wouldn't come here again. +1 star because the waitress saw me drop one of my chopsticks on the ground and immediately gave me a new pair literally 2 seconds later.
