I have donated blood in several different Red Cross centers over the years…read more The one at 4190 S. Telegraph Rd in Bloomfield Twp has to be one of the best. A large facility with many very professional nurses who are also very caring - and careful. I can give only whole blood as my veins are too small to give platelets, but they have 6 tables for people who can do that.

Starting early 2020, I began donating blood on a regular cadence in part because there is ALWAYS a…read morecritical need for blood, especially during the pandemic, and also because I wanted to get over my irrational fear of needles and giving blood. When I first began donating, I was just signing up for blood drives close to me that fit the dates I was eligible to donate during, but quickly realized that blood drives are way more stressful and much less comfortable than I was okay with. It was always hit or miss with the people working the blood drives and how skilled/confident they were in drawing blood. Often times they turned it on me saying my veins were too difficult or that I hadn't drunken enough water, all of which are excuses because as experience has taught me, I do drink enough water and my veins are very easy if you actually know what you're doing. Finally, after a blood drive in which the person drawing my blood prodded the needle around while it was already stuck within me then pulled it out and stuck me again without any warning, I had had enough! So for the last 5 times I want to say, I decided to come HERE to an ACTUAL American Red Cross donation center to give blood since these employees draw blood day in and day out and are the true PROS in this business and it has truly been the best decision ever! This is now my go-to place, even though it's a little further of a drive for me. It doesn't matter because the lack of stress and anxiety I feel is completely worth the extra 10 minute drive. The people here are SO friendly! I've gotten someone different every single time and they have all been so welcoming, appreciative, and just talkative, which I'm really thankful for while I go through this process to keep me engaged in something other than the anticipation of getting a needle stuck in me. They are confident in their abilities and there's just such a marked different here vs. all the blood drives I've gone to. They go about their day confidently, they all seem to really enjoy working here, and it's just always a positive experience. Plus, they often have some fun freebies here too for you to take! :) All in all, this donation center is absolutely amazing and I strongly recommend this as the place to go if you are ever donating blood or need blood work done!!

I used to think that my friends could teach me to drive, but I finally realized that I needed the wisdom of a professional and that's just what I got. Janita not only taught me how to drive well, she taught me how to pass the State of Michigan road skills test (two very different goals). She also helped me relax while I was driving by telling me a slew of truly bizarre stories. Trust me, great storytelling ability is an excellent quality in a driving instructor. I took 4 hours of lessons. I found the rates to be the best among all the local driving schools. It's $50 an hour for adults, or $95 when you purchase 2 hours at once (and you don't have to use the two hours at the same time). As far as I can tell, this business has no storefront. Their website is kinda lame, but it gave me the phone numbers I needed to get the ball rolling. The practice vehicle was in great condition and fine to drive; it comes complete with a passenger side emergency brake! 1 Stop Better does not offer road skills testing. Oh, the best part is that they will pick you up and drop you off wherever you want. I was able to turn my lesson into a ride from my Ann Arbor job to my Ypsi home - and I drove it! Being a regular bus commuter, that felt awfully good.

It's truly sad when you are met with dry, surly inconsistent reception from staff. When individuals seek out facilities like these it is a cry for help with your physical and mental wellbeing. Why should I believe I am able to get better service from a fast food restaurant than a medical facility that I have placed the total care of myself or loved ones. I believe the entire staff should require weekly if not daily sensitivity training reinforced with a performance management regimen. I am not blaming the warm body that was hired to fill a slot. I blame leadership for hiring and allowing this less than substandard behavior. In other words, 'you are only as good as your leadership team.' If an employee respects their leadership and has been trained properly, they would never put them (and the organization) in a bad light. I am now expanding my search for a more suitable facility. It should be a calling for those that wish to work in the field of patient care and not simply a paycheck. Whether you realize it or not, one day you too will require the care of a health center...rehab, nursing, hospital or other.

Five weeks later, she left weighing just 87 pounds. During her stay: She developed bedsores that went untreated for days. Staff placed a catheter in due to a supposed "prolapsed bladder," which was later confirmed by the hospital to be completely inaccurate. She had unexplained bruising on her temple, along with swelling around her eye. A nurse said it was because she sleeps on that side. Mom could only sleep in one position and had never before bruised like that. We took her to the emergency room, and imaging revealed a fresh subdural hematoma. When staff failed to change her clothing, I did so myself and discovered her bra had been put on backward--with the cups on her back. Her glasses were routinely placed on top of a tall armoire, leaving her unable to see and increasing her disorientation. She became malnourished while there; staff did not document what she did or did not eat because there was no order to do so. I'm thinking full trays of untouched food may be the basis of an order. At no point did staff alert us to bruising, eating problems, or changes in her alertness. However, they did call whenever my mother was complaining or considered "difficult." The facility was severely understaffed. On many occasions, I had to transfer her from bed to toilet, feed her, change her, and even help hold her legs so staff could straight catheterize her. More than once, I assisted staff with repositioning her and changing her bedding. Tim showed no concern whatsoever when we raised these issues. A close friend of ours, who is a nurse, visited and urged us to do everything possible to get my mother out of the facility. I formally requested my mother's medical records. The request was accepted, but to this day, the records have not been provided. My mother passed away two months after her stay at Novi Lakes. I do not doubt that her time there contributed to her decline and death.
