The lady who is always serving whenever I go there (I think she's called Mo) does the best glass of beer I've had..wellanywhere! She's also a very friendly person who makes you feel welcome. There's one main bar and a few smaller rooms round towards the back of the bar. The clientel seem a mixture of ages from student types to those approaching retirement age and there always seems to be a friendly atmosphere. I've not eaten there so cannot speak about the food but I can thoroughly recommend the beer they pour there. The place itself is on the border between Hoheluft Ost and Eppendorf, both well-to-do places with big old houses, relatively unscathed from the bombing in the 1940s. It's also barely 10 minutes stroll from the nearest U Bahn station.

We were here for four hours and while I can't remember the exact bill, we paid about 28EUR each, which included three or four beers and a pizza. Decent price for a good evening out. I will say that the pizzas were pretty disappointing, but I won't dock them marks as that's not really the point. As a side-note, there were a surprising number of British expats among the clientele, which was a nice little bonus for me.

Getting seats was a bit of a challenge but we succeeded as it's only a small room. Seats aren't too comfy though, more like simply leather benches and chairs. The clientele was relaxed and slightly older (30/40) than the usual young crowd you'd find in these kind of bars. Sadly neither Astra nor Becks on offer there but Augustiner and Pilsner Urquell instead. Also they seem to have a cocktail of the week for a good price. It's a fine place to kick of a good night out or alternatively for a quiet beer in the neighbourhood during the week. Not too bad.

The concept works well. The crew all speak English and are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. So far, I've investigated some of the more esoteric of German Craft Beers and the journey has been rewarding. I'd like to see BB extend their opening hours, I often arrive after 2000 to find them closed. I believe that there are plans to do so. Beyond Beer faces a big challenge, they have a very successful, first to market, competitor down the road, and that competitor has the advantage of a huge on-site brew pub and restaurant operation that brings massive footfall. If Beyond Beer hope to survive they have to find a way of getting people through the door. I hope that they succeed!
