I came across this hidden gem through reddit. This restaurant is nestled up on one of the side streets more in an alleyway. I ordered an aperol spritz as well as a full order of the Braised onion soup which had franconia onion sauce and delicious homemade potato balls *chefs kiss* my mother had the same but half the portion including the wine soup which she loved! Definitely wish I could've ordered more off the menu! The portions are very generous, loved the cozy ambiance and the unique charm this place had! Of course they offer great casseroles, and they're made fresh per your order. What amazes me is the sheer speed of serving these piping hot dishes. They must have some super duper convection ovens to bake these casseroles from scratch. We didn't try this this time, but they will make casseroles of any combination from the list of ingredients. That's just amazing to me. Not just their food is great, but the service here was wonderful. Our server was a very pleasant and friendly young lady. She explained to us that it's a family-owned restaurant since 1991. So, the food and service are great, but this restaurant also offers a very nice cozy interior with warm atmosphere and chic interior decorations. Overall excellent dining experience in a very unique setting. If you are in Würzburg, you must try this restaurant. This was a wise decision, although I did not see them turn anyone away. There were several large groups seated around us. My husband, my son and his girlfriend who are both studying in Würzburg had never been to this part of the river. It overlooks the water and has the famous large baroque, blue crane--hence the title, old crane--in the center of its outdoor table section with views of the Main River. This area was once a shipping harbor where goods such as grain were mostly unloaded until the mid-19th century. Today, it's brimming with great local beer and wines (we could see the vineyards from our outdoor table) and food! It was white asparagus season when we were there, which I can never resist. It was delicious, but I was happy to be given a bite as well of the schnitzel and fries--a regional favorite in general. Everything we had was great. Next time we will have to leave room for dessert--the Kaiserschmarrn the table next to us ordered looked amazing!
