Did you know Trak is short for Toorak and a very apt name. The Trak has been an icon as the…read moreoriginal art house cinema in Adelaide since the 1960's, featuring mostly European movies at the time. It's not a large cinema and nowadays there is a mix of art house and general mainstream movies showing. It hasn't undergone any major upgrades over the years and so remains true to its original style. Upon entering through the glass doors downstairs there are stairs leading up to the main floor and a stair chair, which is unique but still awkward for someone in a wheel chair so access is limited in this respect. Once up there it's like going back in time, it's very dimmly lit and a bit bohemian in feel. The ticket booth looks like a bar and actually is as and they also serve snacks and drinks. On the side wall are used DVD's for sale from $5 - $10 each, a stand with free magazines like Rip It Up, Attitude Magazine, etc. If you're a regular or intend to be one there is the Trak Cinema Platinum Card, whereby you can purchase 11 tickets for $99, which equates to $9 per movie..not bad. Anyway, check it out for an injection of culture and change of scenery plus there's a few cafes around and Burnside Shopping Centre across the road. And by the way, there's not much off street parking round the back of the cinema so it's best to find a road side park if you're lucky enough, otherwise in the shopping centre car park. Plus check online, over the phone or the newspaper for session times.

Predictable plot twists after formulaic action sequences - give me a break. Trak Cinema always has something interesting to offer, and their focus on foreign and arthouse films makes it a beacon of culture. The building itself could probably do with some redevelopment, but I think that would be missing the point. The worn out and outdated look of the building makes it somewhat of a relic, and it doesn't need dazzling lights and signs to draw people in. The nostalgic feel of the cinema is an experience to appreciate, and though it might be a dramatic change from the enormous screens we're used to nowadays, it has character that warms up to you. Whilst showing the occasional mainstream film, you won't expect to see any B-grade bullshit here. The films are carefully picked from international and local collections, and whilst you might not see as many explosions in this cinema, you will see films with great content.
