Played this course today in incredibly gusty winds (and by gusty, I mean 20+ mph). Here's the lowdown on it: STATE OF THE COURSE - Very well manicured, I am impressed! The fairways are perfect. The greens are being aerated right now so there are little holes and sand everywhere, but I'm sure they'll turn out nice when they're done in a week or so. DIFFICULTY LEVEL - This is a very flat course in general with very manageable par 4's and few hazards in your way. The fairways are wide open and are very forgiving. THE PLAYERS - In general, if you're a beginner, I'd recommend going to Heartwell or Iron Wood Nine (in Cerritos) instead. There are a good couple of par 4's here, and the holes are placed so close to each other that you'll have a good chance of pelting someone on the other fairway if you're not very accurate. Of course, it also doesn't help if the wind is blowing your ball 30 yards to the right or left... THE VALUE - As well manicured as this place is, I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay $18 (the weekend rate) for 9 holes. If you're going to play here on a Sat/Sun, I'd recommend coming in for their twilight rate of $9 or $10, depending on whether you have a resident card or not. However, this place is very cheap in general and very affordable on the weekdays! Overall, thumbs up! read more

Beginner type course. Perfect place to bring co-workers or buddies that want to learn to play if you are the advanced golfer or the friend teaching. 9 holes should only take 2 hours, and therefore isn't a big investment of anyone's time. The par 3's are wide enough to prevent general mishaps and generally void of any water hazards or sand hazards that might drag on a round. Also, there are some par 4's that beginning players will have the opportunity to swing the driver, letting them have a chance to practice with every club in the bag. And the main thing is that its cheap! About $12 bucks to enjoy the course. Doesn't really turn off beginning golfers... So rec park 9 is a good stepping stone for any aspiring golf player. Had a great time, played with my uncle. Only reason why we used a cart because he was coming back from a knee replacement surgery. The greens are well manicured and in good shape. Course is mostly par 3's with a few par 4's mixed in. Have some nice mixtures of flat to some hills. Only reason it received a 4-star because some of the rough were pretty muddy. read more

Like all Long Beach munis, this place is pretty well maintained and had great greens. This is a perfect executive style golf course with two par 4s where you can really try to drive the green - get in a 6am, get out at 8am, and mosey onto work! And this is the REAL reason why I like this course - in the summer, it's only $7 to play in the morning. Shhhhhh don't tell anyone! Price: $7. $12-14 regular rate. read more

Recreation Park Golf Course 9 - Hole 9 - Golf Near Me - Long Beach, California

Don't listen to Jessica's review, newbies shouldn't be starting at a place like this. Maybe the range then a par 3 course. This course is a nice executive 9 hole course, right across the street from a full 18 hole course. Greens are very difficult and fast. Course itself is pretty straight forward and no doglegs, just boom it straight. A nice place I'd play more often if I was closer. read more

This is the worst run golf course I have ever experienced. The course itself is OK. With the exception of Lisa the help at the desk is inexperienced, poorly trained or lack basic customer service skills. Playing golf here can be frustrating. Old man Bob got added to our two-some but he was pleasant enough. Got backed up around hole 5/6 but still finished all 9 holes in exactly 2 hours. I play here a few times a year. It's a great 9 hole if you only have a couple of hours to squeeze in a few holes. I like to bring my wife here as she can be more competitive and I still can break out the driver on a few holes. Short, fun course to play if you do not have a lot of time. They don't over book so you can usually finish in under two hours. Walk or cart ride it doesn't matter. You will still finish at the same pace. Walking is best when the weather is nice. A 7 iron and putter can get you through the hole course if you don't want to carry all your clubs. You have two holes where you can use your long distance driver if you choose. No beverage service on course so stock up at the beginning or swing back by the cafe after hole 5. This public course is great for the beginner golfer, or someone just trying to get a quick 9 holes in. You can find cheap deals for this course online during the week and even weekends. Most of the time, the course is usually wide open and you can quickly finish 9 holes in about 1.5 hours (with no delays of course). There are some long par 4's so you have a chance to bomb that driver that you love! Replay rates are fairly cheap if you want to complete 18 holes. As a golf newbie, I thought the Recreation 9 would be a good place to start since it's close by, public and cheap. After recently figuring out that I was swinging all wrong (which explains the wrist pain, back pain, finger pain...), I was trying to relearn what little I knew and in the process, missed my first three attempts at hitting the ball on the first hole. So, as my group is leaving the hole & moving on to the next one, the golf marshall drives up and says, "You can't take 5 or six practice swings and make other groups wait." Dude, not practicing, I just suck. I could've understood if we were genuinely holding people up, but we were constantly waiting behind the two parties in front of us. Completely ruined my day. BF offered to do acts of biological vandalism to the marshall cart, but I declined out of the principle that maybe it wouldn't be used by the same guy and can't blame everyone because some guy sees fit to yell at beginners. But if you can't be a beginnner on a 9 hole public course called "Recreation Park", where can you be? That's what I'd like to know. read more

Went here last Friday at 11am and it was packed. They allowed a 5-some of ladies in front of us who seemed to be lost on what was going on. Although she did have a very cool remote control hand cart. Not sure if Fridays are retiree days, but it seemed to drag, 3.5 hours to finish 9 holes. read more

I meet my friends down here at least every Saturday. When there aren't tournaments you can finish in about 2-2:30 hours. The people that work here are really cool and the course is well maintained. It's a relatively forgiving course if your not that good. If you live in LBC get your residence card from Big Rec across the street. You golf at a discount every time! read more

Golfed this morning and the course was horrible... A waste of six dollars... Every green had just been aerated. Ever try to put on asphalt? That is what it was like. The check in could have at least warned us. I don't plan to return anytime soon to this course... Plan to take an automatic two put if you do ... Unless you love bogie golf !!! read more

Litlle Rec is a great little course. It's scenic, offers a little elevation change, and is just difficult enough as to not discourage newer golfers. If you're a pro, or you're impatient, don't come here in the late morning on a weekend. There will be older folk and families on the course, using it for it's intended purpose, to have fun and learn. Faster rounds are played in the early morning, or at twilight. I come here to squeeze in a few holes and work on my short game. I read a couple of bad reviews that said more about the reviewers than the course. Kept in proper perspective, Little Rec is a great golfing experience. read more

Used to be a great course. Now it's jammed full of large groups slowly walking push carts and taking forever to play. Takes almost four hours to play nine holes. You wait 10 to 20 minutes on each tee. read more

Great prepared little course, usually can get on quickly, only drawback is 5 somes and you can get stuck behind seniors, some are cool and play quickly but some play slower the the grass grows. BTW all course make you rent clubs and don't allow sharing, this course is not for first time golfers, go to heartwell or ironwood 9 in cerritos they are much easier and shorter. read more

A good way to get on the course without the full commitment of 5 hours of 18 holes. You can typically get through a round in under 2.5 hour, and with three par 4s it gives you a reason to bring out your driver. There are some hills so no two holes look the same. A good step up after playing at your local par 3. read more

Great executive course. Relatively inexpensive ($12 for a Sunday evening). It's well kept up. Most executive courses have only two par 4 holes. Recreation Park 9-hole has four which is nice and makes it a little more challenging for an executive course. Although there's usually little wait to tee off, It can however get a little jammed in the middle of the course. read more

I started golfing in Long Beach and this was one of the first courses I ended up playing, but only after I took a series of golf lessons. I love Little Rec, because its so much more easier to get into then Big Rec. I played several tournaments there and I agree with everyone else that its straight forward and I might add fun. Jessica I think if you're really serious about playing golf you should take a couple lessons and start off at Heartwell its a Par 3 golf course and the first place I ever played a round. read more

I love this course I have been playing here every Tuesday for the last 7 years with my 95 year old grandpa and his old friends. It's not the best but the staff is great and I know it like the back of my hand. read more

new golfer this is the first place i played and it is great. i like the openess of the the fairways. not many trees in the way. i wish i could play everyday. but wallet says no. so once a week is cool. i would recomend this course to anyone who loves golf. read more
